  1. Compromise. You hit the nail on the head and it is not just "handling" vs drag race, but also everyday street driving. The only tire that can come close is the Nitto 555R DR and with your flares, the 275/50-15 is the best bet. It has excellent street manners, good "handling", is not an issue in the wet, can last close to 10K miles, and is excellent at the drag strip. The only 15" wheel I know that will fit huge brakes is the Weld Draglite and Pro-Star XP series, but the style might not be what you want. I was able to run mid-1.50s with the 15" Nittos but could spin the 17s for over 300'. A switch to 26x9.6x16 Hoosier QTPs get me low-1.40s. Ironically, the more power/torque you make the more you end up losing at the strip with compromise tires if you really lay into them hard off the line. The torque from your 3.0L will make the 17s useless at the strip. Initially regretted the expense and PITA of running multiple tires for the street and strip but the results at the strip was worth it. The best setup for the strip would be the QTPs but I absolutely do not recommend them for the street as they are bias-ply and require bias-ply fronts, have no treadwear and will spin you out if someone in front of you spits on the road. I think you need to ask yourself (HONESTLY) how is the car really going to be used, despite how it looks like it will be used. I think the answer will be street driving and drag racing. Question is, how quick do you want to go? I personally think your car has the potential to dip into the 10s, but what compromises are you willng to make to achieve that?
  2. I strongly recommend against 17" DRs if you are serious about cutting quick 60' times.
  3. My setup was definitely a compromise and anything Cyrus goes for in his multi-purpose monster will also have to be a compromise. Its ludicrous to think ANY suspension could hold up and do the job launching a 500hp TT car AND be a killer on a road course. I will say, however, my C4 setup handled better than the stock Z suspension which had Illuminas and the drag strip performance spoke for itself. I never broke a Z stub axle but I was also not running as much HP and was running 275 DRs, but I did bust many u-joints and eventually a CV. The broken Z stub axles I witnessed (more than I can remember) was on a local Z31 running low-10s with a 5-spd. Since that equates to about 500hp, I would say you will definitely break Z stub axles if you let that beast loose off the line. Since you already have the Supra IRS, I say go with it. BTW, I am assuming you are running a manual trans. If it is automatic then you will have less or no breakage. Will it be stronger than the Z IRS? Hard to say but my personal friend was the chief wrench and driver of the Titan Supra and he tells me that they ran the stock IRS and broke many axles but that was 1000hp and a manual tranny on 325 DRs. They switched to an automatic and had no more breakage and even dipped into the 8s with slicks. I still get a kick out of the negative comments about Zs squatting on launch. I cannot imagine how much quicker my 60' would have been if I had only goten rid of that damn squat :D
  4. HEED THE WARNING! PLEASE stop what you are doing and do EFI/Turbo the correct and safe way. Puzzles me why you would install 3 pumps and run 100psi instead of a set of used SVO 36# injs and a single Walbro pump. I know you are trying to prove a point, but to what end? To prove you can do what no one in their right mind would or should do?
  5. MG Midget/Healy Sprite. That swap has been done so you would not be reinventing the wheel but it is not common either.
  6. For those of you looking to make serious HP in a 1st-gen, you do not know how lucky you are to have something like this available to you.
  7. Forget about what anyone else thinks or trying to please others. Its your car and if that is what you like, GO FOR IT and live your dream.
  8. Thanks for confirming the very point I am trying to make. I know there are many dog lovers out there and many will philosophize this issue but I will refrain from any further comment on it. Sentiments were a little high, especially having to go back to get treatment for infection and I sort of regret even mentioning it. I wonder how some folks would feel though if they were the victim having to go through this trauma and pain and be scarred for life?
  9. Merritt Island is under mandatory evacuation and he lives across the street from water so I am sure he is outta there. Best of luck to all the locals who will be riding this out.
  10. I would have gotten a chuckle out of this post a while back until this past Saturday when a 95lb german shepherd ran out of a neighbor's yard, unprovoked, and attacked my wife while she was jogging. A 3" gash on her right arm down to the bone and a couple of puncture wounds leave me wondering what the circumstances would have been if this was one of the many children running and riding bikes in the neighborhood. The circumstances in this post aside, with 5 million dog bites a yr in the USA, I have never understood why someone would keep dogs like pit bulls or german shepherds for pets given their unpredictable nature. While the doctor was sewing her up he expressed the same sentiment after having to treat a 3yr old girl who had her hose bitten off by the "family pet". The mace she carries did nothing to stop that raged animal so now she has to consider jogging with some lethal device to protect herself from the family pets. The owner actually looked me in the eye and said "I am so sorry. I don't know what happened. She has never done that before".
  11. What effect does the preesure rating of a cap have on cooling temps? For example, if an engine runs at 198*F with a 13# cap, what effect would a 10# or 16# cap have on the cooling temp, if any?
  12. Would like to reassess your opinion after you have driven both for a couple of weeks, unless you are just into having the biggest number. As for the 1/4-mile comment, I think you meant ET not speed. With 520rwhp my best was 10.08 @ 134.44. An acquaintance(well known in the Supra world) had "1000hp" on his tag and his best 10.42 @ 142+. MIght be off a little on his times but not by much. As for being the highway bullet, I have my own opinions on running a 1000hp car flat out on public roads, any public road.
  13. The Z is history. I am talking about beating the Rex.
  14. "It means he is being a smart-arse :)" No. It means you made 450rwhp and still have a 125hp shot so the potential is there considering I will have a "slower" car.
  15. If the choice is between a 2JZ drivetrain and a '85 GN 3.8 then go with the 2JZ because the GN drivetrain you want for top performance is the 86-87 intercooled setup. If the choice is between a 2JZ and 86-87 3.8, it would be a tough choice based on my 3.8L experience and unwillingness to mortgage myself to go fast. However, I would not walk away from a 2JZ setup selling for $1700 since you will never find a 86-87 3.8L for that price. Make sure you know the condition of what you are getting. With the right converter and turbo(s)combo, the auto 2JZ will outsprint the 6-spd if you are into drag racing the car. While there is no kit for either, I believe the 2JZ is the more difficult swap and it is a BIG AND HEAVY beast. While a stock 2JZ shortblock is capable of supporting more HP than the 3.8L, how much HP do you want, can you really afford it and can you handle it? Same questions when deciding between the RB25 & RB26 The last question is a serious one to ponder. [On Soapbox] I can tell you that driving a 520+rwhp 240Z with 600lb/ft torque on the street IS NO JOKE and if you are a hot-dog on the street you will kill yourself or worse, take someone with you. 0-100 in 6-secs does not belong on the street. [/Off Soapbox] If you plan to make serious HP with either of those engines, make sure you budget an equal sum for safety, suspension, brakes, wheels & tires. A stock 240Z was simply not designed for such power. Good luck in whatever choice you make.
  16. http://www.torquecentral.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=11 I replaced the tranny and converter and ironically fired it up on the jackstands last Friday Have not touched it since. Plan to take it out for test drive this weekend
  17. Nice score With patience and luck they can be had. Those engines are either going up in flames or being abused to death. They are expensive to have rebuilt and most just give up on them. The former owner of my RX7 picked one up for a bargain as a result of an engine fire. Ended up selling the burnt drivetrain for a nice sum. After we pulled it out and looked at the mess of wiring and plumbing buried deep under the manifolds, I can see why they go up in flames. What a terrible design, but what a gorgeous car. Too bad I have another "toy". BTW, are you on the V8 RX7 board?
  18. Cable is on but still no power. I have well & septic and after 3+ days of no running water, no bath and flushing the toilet with pool water, I broke down and dropped big $$$ on a generator. Almost 10 gals/day to keep that thing running. Too many people suffered worse fates so no complaining here. Hope all the other locals made it through OK.
