  1. No since it only ran for 3 hours he never got it to the dyno. The guy that installed the kit "was reading the o2 sensors with a scanner after the install and said it was ok"....someone should tell him that the o2 sensors arent widebands!(this guy is the other tech I work with, yeah he's a tool!) Guy
  2. Hehehe, well since he's the service writer for Nissan and I'm the guy installing the new engine supplied by Nissan that wont be problem! One of the perks I guess! As for fuel supply, it has a "bigger" fuel pump(walbro 255 I beleive) and bigger injectors. The boost is maxed out at 8 psi by the waste gate spring. Part of the kit is sending the stock PCM in and having it "reflashed" for the turbo kit, so theoretically it should have been ok if the cams weren't a factor. I am just finding it hard to believe that the tune was so far off that the engine "blew up" 3 hours after the install, seems like it should have lasted longer than if it was tune properly? Guy
  3. So even if the PCM was programmed for stock cams and he had different ones in there(bigger ones), that wouldn't cause it to go lean under WOT? If he does go with lower compression pistons and better rods will he have to balance the rotating assembly? Or can we just put the new pistons and rods in the new engine(obviously after we check the piston to cylinder clearances and rod bearing to crank clearances)? Thanks Guy
  4. I would just use a die grinder with a carbide bit for the type of metal your reaming out. The dremel would be better if you want to take it slow though and make it look nice. Guy
  5. My service writer has an 03' 350Z that he put a turbo kit on 2 weeks ago and the motor started knocking 3 hours later. We finally got the approval from Nissan for a short block and if needed a long block. I removed the engine today and found that #2 pistion oiler was broke off and there was bearing material in the oil pan. #2 cylinder was only at 110 PSI compression were as the other 5 were at about 170PSI, obvioulsy damage was done. My theory is that since the PCM was not programmed for the cams he had is that it ran lean under WOT. "Jim Wolf" said that the cams wont affect A/F ratios. If I'm not mistaken pretty much all cars, including the 350Z, dont look at the O2 sensors under WOT and just run off fuel maps that are programmed into the PCM. So if the cams were bigger and allowing more air into the cylinders but the PCM wasn't programmed for those cams it would run lean, correct? My question is if he lowers his compression to say 8.5:1 or 8.8:1 with forged pistons and went with forged rods would his lower end be pretty safe? Apperently the 3.5L is only good to about 420HP before it goes. If he lowers his compression obviously he's going to loose some power if he leaves it at 8psi but since the compression is lower he could up the boost some then correct? He doesn't want to blow this new motor! And for you engine builders out there, if he does goe with new rods and pistons he should have the whole rotating assembly balanced right? Thanks guys! Guy
  6. Deffinetly would have to be my main gauge cluster. I had to do something to make the aftermarkt gauges look at home so I did this...
  7. What the H would that turbo normally go on!? Sweet Jesus! Guy
  8. Its not Scotties, he sold his a while ago. $8500 seems like a pretty fair price! Someones going to be happy! Guy
  9. He didn't say anything about the motor today so I just kept my mouth closed. Today he told me that the most voltage drop allowed in circuit is 1/4 mV! Yeah that's right only .025V across all those wires, switches, and relays! I said ah no you mean .2V for every connector or relay. He looks at me like I'm a complete moron and then I said Nissan said that for the circuit I'm checking, 1.0V is the max voltage drop(starter circuit) at the starter. I usually don't respond to any of his "great insight about how to fix a car" but he asked for it today and I pretty much shut him up with that one. He tried to back pedal out it but it was no luck, he still sounded like a moron! LOL And when I try to correct him nicely he just shoots me this stupid face and walks away! How are you ever going to learn from others if you don't stop to listen? I sure have learned a lot from the guys I used to work with over at Dodge! I never told people they were straight up wrong, but I did question things at times to try to understand what they were saying. Guy
  10. So as you may have read in this previous post, the guy I work with is a real tool. We have yet another situation on our hands with him at work, he put a turbo kit on my service writers 350Z and it "blew up" 3 hours later. Its not totally blown up, it does run but its got a horrible engine knock. So last night my service writer and I were talking. He told me that Brian thinks its upper engine noise and that it can be fixed. He said its probably a stuck lifer or a broken valve spring. So I asked he what he was doing when it "broke". He said he wasn't beating on it too bad or over revving it. His valve springs are safe to 7000 RP MS and the rev limiter is set at 6600. So it didn't float a valve. The engine was not making any noise when it left the shop, so I really doubt its a lifter that just all of a sudden got "stuck". I then told him(my service writer) to start it up so I could listen to it. As soon as I heard it running I said "sure sounds like rod knock to me." He's like nooooo, Brian said its from the top end. I'm like I really don't think so but its hard to say with out having it on the lift and listening to it from the bottom. So he asks me if I'll come in early and take a look at it and I say sure I'll come in a half an hour early and take a peek at it. So I show up a half an hour early today and rack the car up on my hoist. I start it up and raise it up on the hoist, sure does sound like its coming from the bottom end. So then I take the bottom oil pan off and guess what I find.......bearing pieces! The only place in that engine that theres bearings is the rods and mains! The cams are machined right into the heads so its not from those. Well after Brian came over and looked at when he got there he said "no I don't think thats bearings, it looks like it came from the top of the engine somewhere." Then we found another piece that at the time we didn't know what it was. So all day the big fiasco was "who's going to put the new engine in this thing?" I told my service writer I would be happy to do it but you better clear it with Brian because I'm sure he'll get pissed off if I fix it. So he asked Brian and he said he would do it. It was not a big deal to me, I didn't care if I did it or not. So the end of the day rolls around and I'm trying to figure out what this other piece is thats in the oil pan and the it hits me.....its an oiler for the bottom of one of the pistons! That's when Brian came over and said "oh what now your fixing it!?" I said "ah no I'm just trying to figure out what this other pieces is" and he goes "oh well your not going to find the problem down here, its from the top half of the motor" and I go "I really don't think so, that piece is a piston oiler" and then he just proceeds to turn around and walk away! Then I came to find out that the PCM was not programmed the cams that he had in there. He had it programmed for the stock cams. I asked why he didn't have it programmed for the cams that he had in there but he didn't think it was a big deal. Well I said if the cams that you had in there really "woke the engine up like you say they did then I'm sure you were getting more air in there." I then asked if he used a wide band to verify the A/F ratio and he said no but the PCM was programmed for 11:1. I said "yeah for stock cams." He said "well Brian watched the 02 sensors with the scanner and they were alright." I said "thats great but those 02 sensors aren't wide band 02 sensors and don't really tell you crap about your wide open throttle A/F ratio." I think what happen was he was running too lean and it was detonating and cause at least one rod bearing to fail. It's the only thing that I can think that happen. From what I can tell the kit was installed right but he should have either taken it to a dyno right away to get the A/F checked or let me bring my wide band in and check it with him. I don't really care what Brian thinks, he should have told him that! I mean Brian does have a subscription to "Super Tuner" so he's obviously a professional "super tuner"! I am going to really piss him off tomorrow when I bet him that its not from the top half of the engine! If he's so sure that its a cam journal piece then he should put his money where his mouth is! Guy PS if you read the first post you know that Brian is getting canned soon. Today he got his frist warning about being late, having a bad attitude towards everyone and everything, and having waaaaaay to many serious "comebacks"!
  11. Yeah but I'm not talking about all those other things, I'm just wondering about all those holes. I understand the concept of loosing weight but these seems a bit extreme, thats all. Guy
  12. I voted Viper because its that car that everyone wants but no one can afford! However having driven a Viper, I will say that it rides like a lumbar wagon. The suspension is sooooooo stiff for a daily driver. I think a C6 would be much nicer for a DD. I really like how the C5's drove/ride, much smoother for a daily driver. Are you going to be modding this car? If so you'll have to remember that the Porche/BMW/Benz are going to more than likely require special tools to even the simplest things. Guy
  13. So you've lost 20lbs by punching holes in all those panels? So if 100lbs of weight savings equals about 10HP, you've gained 2 HP by doing this? Seems like a lot of work for not much of a reward? Does it strengthen the chassi that much? I'm just confused by why someone would go to this much trouble to save a few pounds when making a few more HP is much easier? Guy (Dont take this post in a bad way, I'm just curious )
  14. I would say it's fixable too! A guy who can TIG weld should be able to fix that easy. I would fix it and keep it personally! Guy
  15. Yeah today he asked me how many hours I have booked so far this week and I told him as of yesterday I had 86(for 8 days of work). Apparently this is a lot to him because he kind of laughed and gave me a funny look. I wanted to say yeah I have more hours booked than you because I come in on time, I don't take 20 smoke breaks a day(I don't smoke) and I actually bust my *** when I'm at work. He just walks around complaining about how he doesn't get any hours and how I'm a "gravy hound." No I'm just a hard worker and don't come to work to stand around all day talk to people! I did 2.5 hours of training last night! Im not sure how much more I need but every minute I do its one minute closer to this douchebag being fired! Muahhahahahhahah!
  16. If you took a pic of the crack we might be able to tell you if its salvagable.... Guy
  17. Yeah have been choosing option A but for me there is an option C...finish Nissan training so that there is no reason to keep him around! Yeah I knew it was the wrong way to spell but I couldn't think of how to spell it right! Guy
  18. I've been at Nissan for about 2.5 months turning wrenchs and everytihng is great....except for the other tech I work with. The guys is 27 years old but acts like he's a 13 year old on her first period! When ever even the slightest thing goes wrong(ex. rusty nut that wont break loose with out a torch) he starts cussing and throwing tools! I mean is that really neccessary? I can't wait to see him when something really goes wrong! He's also got a problem with me because I'm a "domestic guy". He thinks that Honda's and Vtec are the greatest thing since sliced bread! Im not a domestic guy, Im a horse power guy, if it dont have any HP then I dont like it! So I guess a Honda Si with Vtec falls under that category! I think if he ever drove a real car with some real power he would switch from Vtec to SBC! LOL Oh and he also thinks hes a friggin car god! He's always trying to dumb everything up when he talks to me. He was one year ahead of me in school(we went to the same tech but he was a year ahead of me) but I think I have more work experice then him from my previous job at Dodge and from working for a small independent shop on the side. He knows honda and nissan were as I know Dodge, Chevy, Nissan, Ford, and a little Toyota. When ever he gets a problem that he can't figure out in like 15 minutes he calls the "tech line" for help. I wouldn't let him touch my crappy stratus with a 10' pole! It was pretty nice yesterday when he had to ask me for help with a 4WD system on a Frontier because he doesn't know jack about 4WD! LOL He ordered a transfer case for it but I have a feeling that it wont fix it. I tried to help him by telling him to take out the front front driveshaft to see if the noise is gone but he just went and ordered a t-case. I really hope it doesn't fix it so that I can watch him throw some more tools! LOL Basically my service manager said that once Im Nissan certified that he's gone. The only reason he's still there is because we need one certified tech(we only have 2 techs and Im one of them in our Nissan building(we also service Mazda, Hyduai, Mitsu, VW, and Volvo in different buildings)). GOD I CAN'T WAIT TILL THIS DUSHBAG IS GONE! END OF RANT! Guy
  19. Very nice job! So just how big is this garage? Did you build the whole thing or did you just refinish it? Guy
  20. Where in WI do you live now? I know he doesnt do the work on the car but Im not sure where he gets it serviced/fixed. I haven't seen the RHD 240 but I have seen a Green 280 with racing strips in Appleton. Guy
  21. B___Sosick, I doubt I will get pics anytime soon. Maybe once my car is painted I will go over and get some pics of them together. I don't really want to ask to take pics of another guys car, seems kinda weird to me...LOL! Its pretty close in color to your 280ZX though. Next time I see he I will tell him about our site and see if he'll post some pictures for all your viewing pleasure! Guy
  22. I found out last week that my mom's new neighbor has really nice Z car. She told me it was a 260Z though. Well today I was at my mom's and I was on my way to town and saw this beautiful Z car drive by me. So I whipped a U-turn and followed it back to my mom's neighbors house. Once I pulled in I realiezed that it wasn't a 260 but a 240Z! I talked to the owner about it and it turns out its an AZ car that he got from one of Barret Jackson's auctions! The car is absolutley perfect! Its been stripped to bare metal and primered and painted in every little crack. The engine is still the straight six but it's been upgraded(not too sure on which 6 though) and is pushing 250HP to the wheels. It's been lowered about 2" and has bigger sway bars and urethane bushings all the way around. He said the car handles like its on rails! I told him that if he ever wants to sell it to call me! I then told him about my car and told him we should race for pinks!LOL He declined that offer though?! He also had a nice old Mustang(late 60's eary 70's) and a Toreno with a 429. Both of those cars were mint too! He said his 240Z was his favorite car by far though! Before I left he told me to stop on by sometime and he would let me drive the 240! I still can't beleive that my mom's new neighbor is a Z car owner! Guy
  23. I agree, we need pics of this beast! Congrats on getting it back up and running! And Denny, long time no post! Nice to see your still hanging around! Guy
