Happy New Years! I resolve to get my car "done" this year! Resolutions?
80LS1T replied to cyrus's topic in Non Tech Board
I want to paint my car this spring and finish the interior and call my car DONE!(atlest for a while) Guy -
I dont think parking on hills with the vehicle in gear hurts the clutch? I have never heard that atleast. I have 80,000 miles on the clutch in my truck and I leave it in gear all the time rather than use the parking brake(parking brake cable is rusted tight). Im just curious if it really does hurt the clutch....... Guy EDIT....Ok jmortensen, did you mean while the vehicle is running and trying to hold the vehicle from rolling back on a hill or just holding the clutch in while at a stop?

Well for a 280ZX with manual tranny it takes gear oil. It depends on what temp range you are in.... API GL-4 140W (above 50*F) SAE 90W (between 30*F - 100*F) SAE 85W (between 10*F - 85*F) SAE 80W-90 (below 100*F) SAE 80W (below 85*F) SAE 75W (below 50*F) Hope that helps! Guy

Frustrated - flames from carb/stalling issue

If the length is the problem buy a set of wires that you can make into any length that you need. Thats what I did to solve my wire to header clearance issues. I bought my kit from Thunder Racing. Its the "Taylor Spiro-Pro Spark Plug Wires (Universal Cut-to-Fit)" Guy -

Usually when a blinker stays on it either means you have a burnt out bulb or the flasher is bad. I would try new bulbs on the right side and see what happens since you've already replaced the flasher. Guy -

I dont think it really matters that is a high performance SBC. What you have going on is a drivablity concern that could happen to any engine. I know if you brought it to our shop we would treat it like any other carbed V8 engine, start with the basics and go from there. Then if it gets into a tuning issue or wrong head/cam combo then turn to a speed shop or call the head/cam manufacture for info. Im just glad I have some very knowledgable friends in the auto repair business so that when Im going through problems like your having I can ask around. Its often something simple that your just over looking. Once you figure it out you say "man how did I miss that?" Some times it just takes a different set of eyes and ears to figure out these issues. I would love to see a video of that thing running on the highway eating up a Cobra/Vette/EVO/Viper! LOL Guy

Another thing you could do is take it to a shop to have it looked at. The guys that fix cars on a daily basis usually can figure these things out pretty quick. Just an idea if you get too frusterated with it. A few bucks at a good shop is money well spent if you ask me... Guy -
(cough)CFDF sucks!(cough). I had one and all it did was chatter and turn my flywheel into a big hotspot basically. Not a big fan of them personally. Guy

I had a Fidanzda alluminum flywheel for a while but after swtiching form my factory counterbalanced steel flywheel to the alluminum none counter balanced flywheel I soon realized that it through the balance off of the whole rotating assembly. What ever you do make sure you balance the flywheel to the engines rotating assembly. I learned the hard way. I had to pull the tranny right back out after figureing out what I did. I am going back with the steel factory flywheel. By the way this was for a 95 LT1/T56 combo. Guy

The thing that jumps out at me is the plug wires. I would get a new set for all 8 plugs and try it again. It doesnt take much to mess up a plug wire with heat from a header. I know because I too melted some wires on my old headers. Also double check your firing order is correct for your wires. Backfiring through the carb usually means wrong timing, lean, or wrong firing order. Thats what I have experieced aleast. Guy -
I've got one to add as of today.... I was changing out a short block on a Neon today and put the headgasket on backwards. Yeah I put the front on the back and vise versa! Yeah it ran when I was done but oil got into the coolant and its a big mess that I get to fix tomorrow! Took me about 6.5 hours to do the whole job and then I thought I was done until the coolant started to turn yellow an milky! It only ran for 2-3 minutes so Im sure the new short block is ok but I sure felt like a complete moron! It just figured because everything else was going waaaaaaaay to smooth! Guy
-
I wanted to do something like that but I dont think I have the extra space to do it since my engine bay is 3" shorter. My fan is pretty tight against the water pump so i couldnt tilt my radiator back. Very nice work though! Guy
-
Yeah lookin' good! I cant see the pics either though? Guy
-
I would think a good machine shop should be able to get you some dowels. Someone just has to tell you were to put them in the block. Guy
-
Those dowels may be a pain in the a$$ but they are important for lining the gasket up. I dont see how you could possibley line that gasket up with out them? Guy

I've done a few dumb things in my career as a Auto Tech... When I first started 3 years ago I forgot to tighten all 4 wheels and the drivers side rear came off about 10feet down the road. Luck for me I was driving and no damage was done! A few years prior to to that I was doing a head gasket on a buddies Geo Metro. I broke a cylinder head bolt off and rather than doing it the right way and pull the head back off I tried to get it out with the head on. Ended up drilling into the block! Yeah my buddy just sold the car after that! Whoops! 2 years ago at work I let a Jeep Cherokee run for like a minute or two with out any oil in it! Yeah it didnt really make any noise either, I just happend to remember not putting oil it it! Doh! That's all I can think of right now, LOL Guy
-
To me it looks like the head has non dowels it. Maybe they are there but I cant see them. This could be your problem right here... Guy
-
Does the L28 have any aligning dowls on the block to properly hold the head gasket in place? It doesnt look like? Was the block machined and then were they removed and not put back in? Cause if that gasket wasnt lined up properly when torqued down it could blow out real easy.... Guy

How bad was it to change the pan? Did you have to lift the motor off the motor mounts? Guy

Anyone here work for Mazda or Hyundai as a Technican?

I was given this as an excuse..... We go off two basic pay scales for customers....1 is GRID($84.95/hour) and the other is MAINTANCE($55.00/hour). Grid is your normal stuff like engine work, tranny work, diagnosics, etc. Maintance is just that, stuff like brakes, belts, tires, flushes, etc. So what he (my service manager) has been doing is taking my stuff booked at GRID and turning it into Maintance. So for ever hour that I book at Grid he turns it into 1.54 hours(84.95/55= 1.54). The customer doesnt know the difference but I get more hours for the same amount of work. So when I booked 110 hours (2 weeks) for my pay period I only got paid 88 hous because thats all I was there. He figured that was good. I told him that was BS. I told him there was no way that he "helped" be with 22 hours by switching the pay type over. He said it was probably more. Well I made him check and he only helped with 10 hours. So what he did was "bank" those 22 hours for weeks when Im slow. Like this pay period Im only going to book 73 hours for an 80 hour pay period. So he will take those "banked" hours and put them on this check so that I have 80 hours for an 80 hour period. The only reason hes doing this is because the front office is only looking at hours per repair order and not dollars per hour. So when he switchs the pay type it makes it look like we are a lot busier than we really are, so he looks good. Which Im fine with just as long as I get paid. I just think (and most of the guys I work with) that I should get paid more because I am picking up the slack for the guys that choose to work slow because they are hourly. Even though they say there are flat rate, no one believes it though because they work that slow! I will be talking with the Mazda dealership about pay and if its a good enough offer I will have to seriously consider it. I really dont want to work on Imports though. Although I really wouldnt mind driving one of those RX8's! Guy -
I paid $500 for the whole MSA kit! No way am I paying $450 for just the front bumper! I understand why no one wants to import them.....shipping and taxes are outradgous! Guy
-
Is that $1120 just for the front air dam? Guy
-
Its covering a fresh air vent to the inside of the car. So you wouldnt want to seal it off completely. Some other kind of cover would work though.... Guy
