How much torque for metal headgasket?
Ivan280zt replied to Ivan280zt's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
monster626, no its not hks 2mm its just custom made 1mm that i got from friend. i have ended up torquing it to 65 pounds. i talked to few friends that have done it (all experienced gearheads ) so i just ended up compromising at few more pounds than stock but will see how it will hold lol. Ivan -
How much torque for metal headgasket?
Ivan280zt replied to Ivan280zt's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
I found that kinda odd that you have to tighten the metal headgasket less. i already have copper spray so i am good on that. now i just wonder why is this guy that builds sr20's goes up to 90 pounds. reason why i found that odd to begin with was when i read that paper from ARP it said that nuts are torqued to 75% of their "strenght" at our factory 61 pounds so if i went to 90 pounds that would be like 110% therfore they might just brake. i just wonder if anyone can give me straight answer like go to 55 pounds or so but oh well it looks like some phone calls are in order. Ivan -
i am very close to putting my metal head gasket (1mm) with arp studs and i am just wondering if anyone has experience with this how much should i torque them down. i know that factory spec is like 61 but i know the guy that runs shop (all he does is work on sr20's) and he recomends going up to 90 pounds. that just sounds high to me. i would really like some input from L6 guys. Thanks, Ivan

Ivan280zt replied to Ivan280zt's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
Well just got of phone with ARP and they said not to even worry about i guess i am not the first one who did this . i explained to him that on one side its just paint scratch and on other side same thing plus little notch and tech guy told me that wont change anything strenght wise. now i guess that i should be good worst case scenario when (key word when) i get my car running i will triple check to see how studs are holding and if there is any issue coming from area where that stud is i will go and replace it them so time will tell. Hahaha who said anything about serious turbo engine all i got is 150k long block that is getting some head studs and new head gasket . But no excuses . I was just checking that stud that i "damaged" and you know when you use pliers sp to loosen something it will leave marks on two sides but not on whole stud. on one of those two sides all i did say scratch paint and on other side its paint and little bit of metal (i mean just little bit) but i am going to go and call their tech line and see what they have to say . Thanks Yasin. Ivan -

Mike, Yes i am using right ends because one side is standard other one is metric. Slownrusty, reason that i have used whole can of wd is to make sure that all the dirt was out and it just happens that there was quite a bit in most of them but you did however remind me of something. when i was cleaning them out on the ones that i really took my time on studs almost went in all the way and on the one that i just used little wd and went through with tap once or twice ended up going in all the way so maybe i just created hydraulic pressure is most of them? what can i do about that? JT, I did the same thing tighten two nuts against each other just to see how far will it go down and it bareally went down any maybe one extra thread. So what did u end up on that truck motor did u just screw them as far as they would go with hand and left few threads stick out or did you figure out how to get them all to go down? BillZ260, Yes i have used right size tap 100% sure about that and four of them that bottom out do not wiggle at all they are in there so nice that it makes rest of them jeleous . On the side note i did something messed up (it was 4am when i did this so dont flame me for it). When i tried to screw one of the studs in just to see if it will go far enough i got it in too tight and the only way to get it out (at the time that my brain was 5% operational) was with pliers long story short i scratched the stud some not much but little more than just paint now how bad is that? am i do for new one or will it be fine with little deeper scratch on it? Thanks for your help guys, Ivan -
Ok here is whats going on. I just spent three hours (yes i typed it right) cleanning 14 holes in block to make sure that they are clean. I used right size tap and whole can of wd40. i think that i have ran that tap about 15 times through each hole every time spraying wd through it until there is absolutelly no dirt whatsoever. Now here is my problem. When i went to put my studs in (trial fit) when hand tighten most of them had about two threads still sticking out (there is no side play or anything they are in there nice and firm) but about four of them went in all the way with out any threads being out. So now i am wondering is this normal or what? There is no way that they are going in any further even if tighen them down some and when i take them out and look in the hoole its all super clean so now i am confused on what should i do? Keep running that tap harder (cant think of anything else) or just leave it as is? Does anyone has any experience with Arp head studs that can give me some input. Ps. on side note on apr box it said to tighen the studs hand tight any opinions on this? or should i tighten it down just little bit with tool? I am sorry if this dont make too much sense but its 5am and i am about to pass out so i apaolgize in advance. Thanks, Ivan

anybody know whats the most HP out of a Turbo L28ET?
Ivan280zt replied to a topic in Turbo / Supercharger
Ok here we go again one more of those questions of how much power... Here is little story. Most of you know member on here by name JTaylor he is the guy with beautifull orange 280z thats riding on some 18's . Well yall wont belive but he made 388whp and i think 430 pounds of torque at wheels and it was all done on stock 82 electornics, 370cc injectors, stock fpr, and mix of race gas. Did i mention that this was stock junkyard motor 160xxx + miles and stock cam with light head work . He did have 3inch exhuast big i/cooler, and nice size turbo and it was all done at about 21psi yes it was running way too lean but he did finish the pull and i was right there watching it. He did make 366whp all day long and very much safe at least as safe as those old crapy electronics can be. If mike has nice turbo and good ems i can't see why he would not be able to make 20 more whp than JTaylor did. I would however run some damn race gas in there you know just to be safe . I would really like JT to chim in on this subject because he knows his car and setup best (i guess i would be second then lol). Ivan -
Man that sucks i would really like one of those braces but if he is not responding there is not much that we can do about it then. Tim240z Do you know of anyone that has lsd brace for sale or someone that would make one? Thanks, Ivan

Ok ready for primer but which one to get?
Ivan280zt replied to Ivan280zt's topic in Body Kits & Paint
Racerx Yes i will still use the same wheels . To get them to fit required five lug conversion (standard way of course) small spacer up front (about 1/4 inch thick) and front wheels are 40mm offset. Back wheels are 20mm offset 8" wide and all i had to do was to trim the fender weels some but that was just for an insurance and piece of mind that i wont mess brand new tires. Friend of mine has rest of my engine bay photos and as soon as he emails them to me i will post them. So far we got the compressor and brand new paint gun (not sure what kind but if it matters i can find out). I would like to ask you few more questions so i can continue my journey lol. Ok where should i buy the primer, which one to get, and how much of it? Second thing. When i get it applied how long should i wait for it to dry and how many coats to put? also what grid of sand paper to use to smooth it all out. Finally i am going to paint it black so which black to get and again how much of it (quart???) and is that all i would need (i dont know anything about clear coat and such do i need that?). I appologize for such a long post but it just seems like when it comes to paint and body EVERYONE ask's (bothers lol) you so i guess that i am not an exception . Thanks alot, Ivan -
So is this guy selling those allminum braces? i clicked on that link and there is nothing on there about lsd brace. i am looking to buy one of them and every time that i do search (on any z board) i get this email address V8-240z@juno.com and i have tryed to email him few days in row but no response so far. is he the only guy that has lsd braces for sale?i really need one but i cant wait too long. Thanks, Ivan

Ok ready for primer but which one to get?
Ivan280zt replied to Ivan280zt's topic in Body Kits & Paint
Well i just figured since i have spent so much time stripping everything down and cleaning up i might as well go extra step and get it painted right way. Now it looks like i will be boroving my uncles air compressor and friend of mine has brand new paint gun so it looks like it all might happend as soon as this sunday. RacerX i have some pictures and i will post them tonight but here is it looked when i started http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/439204/5 Ivan -
Those are nice numbers when i went to reynolds last year i put my 280z on scale and it came out to 2540 with half tank of gas but i do kinda miss front and back bumpers, spare tire, momo seats . every time that i add someting to the car i try to reason what i can take off it just so i would't add more weight lol Ivan
-
So i got my engine bay sanded down (first time this kinda of work), hooles welded (jb weld hey it works) and now i would like to go and put the primer on but dont know what to get but i would like it to be in spray can. i am not looking for anything special because i am going to spray paint it anyway (spray cans) and since this is my first time doing it it dont have to be show quality but i still want it to look somewhat nice . any sugestions? Thanks, Ivan

Ohh god i dont even want to think about this crap right now but since its already here i might thorow in my experience so far. first of all i dont have set budget so i cant blame myself for that plus one less thing to worry about. so far i think that i have about $15k in my z but that does include the car. now while back i had headgasket let go and any normal person would go and get new headgasket take the head to shop get it cheaked out but this is when our worst enemy comes into the play yall know him as "while i am at it" 8) so instead only spending about $200 to get my car on its happy trails you think hmmmm.... its time for better tranny, new bottom end, put that i/cooler on, hide the wiring in engine bay well hell while i am at it i might just go and prep and paint the engine bay.....blah blah blah..... so instead $200 now i need $1000 crap it just keeps adding up and the way its going it will wont stop any time soon . our z cars are never ending battle...... sorry for the rant i kinda needed it lol. Ivan
