The half ring with holes in it looks like a turbo journal bearing sleeve to me.

So I'm acquiring a $400 Datsun 521, don't know if it was worth it

L20B eh? Got a KA24E head floating around? http://www.ozdat.com/membersites/zac510/ -
No differences forward of the A pillar, 2 str and 2+2 had differences from the pillar back between them, but 2strs swap straight over with other 2 strs, and 2+2s likewise.

Formula Ford is more interesting than Formula 1 these days.

I had an '83 L20E powered C31 Nissan Laurel for a while, until it got stolen from where it was parked on the street, and stripped. That would not have been much lighter than the old Mercs, but it was a wonderful comfy cruiser. With their sub 2L litre tax breaks, I think the Japanese must have the most small capacity engines in large executive cars of any country.

I vote Acid Trip, you see him in a dungeon, dressed up like a torturer in black leather and a hood, advancing on a poor gormless assh*le strapped to a table, a carafe of acid in one hand and a sharp serrated implement in the other...

A 20,000 Kw portable fusion plant and a couple of antigrav plates... More realistically, a plug-n-play V12+trans package with comes ready to drop in the bay and splice in the wires/plug on the fuel line, using the stock engine and trans mounts and stock driveshaft. From what is already available, Flat plane V8 with quad dual throat downdraft carbs. Anyone got the winning lotto numbers for this coming weeks $25 Million NZ National lotteries draw?

Any ideas for jacking a car higher?
kiwi303 replied to dpuma8's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
I know one guy who worked on his engine from underneath by finding a friend with a house build on a hillside, with a stair from the built up parking in front of the garage down to the lawn, which was inset into the parking pad. He could drive over the inset stairway and park with the front wheels on each side of the stairs, and underneath, the stars made a handy seat to sit on while reaching up to work in the engine bay... Maybe you could find a place like that and back up over it -
Tips for shipping an engine across the country?
kiwi303 replied to auxilary's topic in Non Tech Board
Don't stand within the old walls of the city of York with a bow and arrow and horned helmet on! it's STILL legal to kill a Scotsman or a Viking with a weapon who is within the old walls. The law dates back to the 900's and STILL hasn't been knocked off the statute books Back on topic, I've stabilised motors to travel (albeit only in the back of my van) by bolting a bracket where the engine mounts bolt on, and coach bolting 2x4 to the brackets, then just nail up a frame froms crap lumber to act as an engine cradle holding the engine to the pallet the same way as a real engine cradle mounts the engine to the chassis. -

But on the other hand, if someone handed you a nice rifle and pointed to Bambi standing looking at you stupidly, you DO know how to turn the funny fourlegged horny critter into BBQ and stew right? -
car runs better without oxygen sensor
kiwi303 replied to Ruiz Racing's topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
Obvious test, swap a known good sensor from another car and clear the computer, see if it clears up, if yes, get a new O2 sensor. -
As the title says, I need to get some Cleveland heads shipped form the seller to me, he's not sure what they weigh, other than "Effing Heavy" they're closed chamber, cast iron, stock Aussie 302 cleve heads, but the weight will be close enough to any other clevo head. They're to go on the block and crank I have in the workshop, I could get open chamber heads closer, but prefer to have closed chambers. Thanks guys.

How much of that leakage is soot, gunk and carbon buildup stopping them closing? A good clean and a lapping should solve MOST of the leakage problems if it's only minor leakage.

Got myself some new wheels.
kiwi303 replied to kiwi303's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Thanks Yasin, on the Boyd Coddington site, the cheaper Legend and Legacy lines were starting at around 500 a wheel and going up from there... since I got these for $200 for the set of 4, plus shipping, I'm happy with the price As to looks, I quite like them, they aren't thin-spoke modern racing wheels, which I don't really like, they remind me of old rods and cruisers. -
I believe you will find the mods are expressly set against allowing editing of threads older than a set period. Some past members got pissed off and edited their build threads with lots of good information on modifying things, to be blank, then left HybridZ. Before my time, but I've seen the "Edit old posts" topic show up enough times to learn the reason why not by now... The mods view is if you don't want your tips and information out there, don't put it up in the first place, once it's up, it's staying so others can use it. Since that's the site policy, the mods are pretty helpful about mod edits of old posts to reflect current data like changed img links, they'll just not wipe everything like a miffed whiny brat.

Re the T56, I remember on a Holden site a discussion about fitting a T56 in place of the T5's some holdens came with. From what I remember someones second hand T56 from a later LS engined holden came with no bellhousing and to fit to his 253 early Torana with Supercharger kit, he whipped the T5 bellhousing off, redrilled the bell to match the T56 bolt pattern and bolted them up. Maybe an L28ET T5 ZXT bell could be made to fit the T56? worth checking out anyway.

if you look around theres a pic of J&J racings Z with a blown v8 doing a wheelstand with fronts in the air and rear drag slicks visibly distorting from the twist. Yup, the R200 will handle it if you don't spend a lot of time spinning one wheel while the other is planted.

I was browsing Trademe, New Zealands equivalent to Ebay, just checking out what was there, when I found some 0 offset 7x17 4x114 wheels. At the price they were up for, $200 starting bid, no reserve, I just couldn't resist slapping a bid on. To my surprise, despite only bidding the start price, no-one else wanted them They're listed as Boyds, the only Boyd wheels I can find mention of are Boyd Coddington of www.Billetwheels.com Does anyone know much about the provenance of Boyd wheels? I like the looks, USDM rod type looks which would go well with the Ford SB due to go in my S130, while not being entirely odd looking on a JDM car. Pics attached.

I don't suppose you can't strip the basement and paint the concrete with a penetrating epoxy which soaks into the concrete and fills all the porous gaps in the concrete the water seeps through? There are a number of products for that job, mostly related to the penetrating epoxies used to stabilise the brick faces on old buildings undergoing restoration which basicly glue the whole frontage into a single surface instead of singles bricks.

Gonna do the OZDat KA24 SOHC head conversion on the L20B bottom end? @ OTM: 40RWHP? thats a monstrous beast of an old datto at least it was the A14 and not the A12, 32Hp is a tad slow

sounds like what my hilux was doing for a while, which was a case of replacing the voltage regulator to fix the problem. Were the early alts External or Internal regulation? My 280ZX Haynes manual shows an internal regulator on the ZX alts, that should have fixed a bad regulator on the Z... My first step would be to thoroughly attack each and every ground surface with a wire brush and rebolt them up again. Use connector cleaner on each and every plug, clip or jack which is in a housing where you can't get a wire brush in. Remember these are OLD cars with lots of time to gunk up.

Bingo! Just the chart I was looking for, I knew there was something around that would be useful in workign out my backspacing for the offsets. I currently have 2 bids on different wheels, If I win both, well, I'll just wait till they get here and decide which to keep once I've seen them with my own two eyes, but with a low bid on each I'm not waiting breathlessly to win... I'll see if everyone else bids lower than me Anyway, a set of wire rims, 15x7 +25 offset, and a set of Boyds 17x7 0 offset. According to the chart above the backspacings are respectively 5" and 4" The 10" -19 rims mentioned in this thread works out about 4 3/4" so 5" on the wires should be acceptable as that is only 1/4" more, but I might need some spacers. If they don't fit the ZX, they should fit my van... Just got to find the maximum allowable backspacing for the S130 now.

My turn to seek advice about bikes and relationships
kiwi303 replied to auxilary's topic in Non Tech Board
Which gives you more fun? Riding the bike or riding the girl? If riding the bike, then get the new one and if she flips out, well, she's not the long term girl for you. There's plenty more out there and one will show up eventually. If riding the girl, then sell the crotch rocket and find a 2 seat pillion passenger, slow cruiser like a Harley or Honda Glide which can fit her on the back so you can combine cruising with your girl, and when you reach a nice isolated spot away from prying eyes, pull over for a spot of riding the girl... Just don't get caught by a troop of scouts on a nature walk, You don't want a charge of indecent exposure and listing on the local cops sexual perverts list! -
Umm, actually, if it's over 20 years old, they're pretty simple to find, I drive past one car yard on my way into town with at least half a dozen LHD american iron examples from A-Team type V8 vans, a TransAm 400ci, C4 corvette, a V6 Camaro and a Caddy sedan They also have 4 Z32s... Checking the back of the PetrolHead magazine has a couple dozen road ready licensed and legal 30's to 70's LHD cars, and double that in project cars. Want a '32 ford? how about a '53 Caddy? But ok, I get your point, Houses to rent are hens teeth in Cali.
