  1. Looking nice... Now, I'm curious about this same type of setup, though I'll be installing the 08 350Z Speedo in my car. It gets it s timing off a different location. I was just going to print up the mounting cup for the speedo on my RepRap. But reason I was writing was that if you're approximately double the pulses from the 300zx VSS, then it sounds like your VSS isn't connected right, or that it's not made the way you expected. A couple ways to address it, one is to measure the outputs on your maxima VSS, and see that the pulses per revolution is. If it's the same then it's a wiring deal, if not then perhaps you can make a frequency divider circuit to cut the pulses in half.
  2. You could make one or maybe buy one of those gates of Ebay. but our trannies have rubber shift lever bushings meaning that the shifter has a little play to the lever, in addition to the play in the linkage. Most likely you'd be fighting the gate much more than you'd like, but once you got user to it, like anything the gate shifting would be second nature. The other question about a gate like that is would it allow enough room in the bottom of the gate for your gears to fully shift. The last thing you want is not fully engaged gears. That would be asking for trouble.
  3. If it runs you'll get a lot more for it. But I sold my last L28 tired pull out for 100 bucks, and the 5sp 78' tranny for $100. It's whatever someone will pay for it. Don't take a cashiers check over craigslist...
  4. Hey Sq_Creations (Eric)yeah, It was good to see you there. I picked up that front airdam from Nelson. It was cool making it to a Zclub meeting, but it's a distance for me. I'd really like to have it back central to town. As for paint, I was thinking Crown Coachworks. They've done a great job fixing my wife's car when it got hit (all 3 times). So might go with them, but I'm going to get some estimates. Haul the car around on a trailer some afternoon. Do you know anyone Good/Cheap, I got time.. Phar (Eric)
  5. Yeah, I've been trying to keep my build on a budget. I'm not made of $, I'm just a lowly computer guy. Hehe, but finishing the HRS30 would be really awesome. I guess mark is going to show his car in april, so he'll have us way beat by then. No biggie. I'm hoping to have the paint done by May if I can swing it. Then it's assembly time. Hopefully it won't take too long after that. The Exhaust is one of my headaches now. Oh I still need the picts. I'll try to post those soon, gotta get them off the camera. Phar
  6. Yep, As for the Rust, if you're not pulling the shelf there's a lot of stuff you can use. Rust eater, etc. I'm partial to Por 15. it's a paint that neutralizes rust and protects at the same time, its sandable and repaintable. The FSM's are on http://www.xenonz33.com/reference.html I highly remommend getting them and pouring over them a while so you can understand how your G35 was put together and what is modular about the harnesses etc. I wouldn't recommend pulling more out of the 280Z than you absolutely have to while you're putting in the VQ. Sure swapping out the brake lines and all sounds like a great idea, but you might want to wait since the brakes are a functional system now and it not needed to be swapped to make the VQ35 run. I'm only saying this because you said you're on a timeline before you have to move. First tings first. get the swap moved over then address the next part of the build. You were talking about redoing the braking system for the brembos so later, that would be a better time to replace your lines. Those tranny mounts are a pain to cut out, mainly for the angle. I was wearing a full face visor and still tried to set myself on fire, not to mention blew through a lot of cutting disks. You might consider lifting the front end with a hoist to make the area more accessible. Can't wait to see more pictures. Phar
  7. Page 6-7 for the wiper hiding mechanisms. That guy's build is certainly "Insane" but I think Marks is much nicer, not to mention more up to date (2009, compared to now.) San antonio Nismo festival. I wonder if it would be a good idea. My wifew will be within 2 weeks of her due date by then, so it's probably not a good idea for that road trip, but it's certainly tempting. Do you think you'll be mostly complets and hopefully running by then? That's not too far off. How's your electrical setup coming along? You were going Haltech right? Phar
  8. Nice, I'll have to get my butt in gear to finish and be the first HR swapped S30. (Mark is technically way ahead, but he's also rebuilt his whole car on a much more massive budget) Otherwise you're going to be the first HR. HR's have been swapped into 240SX's and such already, but I haven't seen one in an S30 so far. I can't wait to see your thread. It'll be good to have someone else to bounce ideas off from. Phar
  9. If I had the $ to afford it I'd love the VR38DETT. That would be an AMAZING swap engine. Instead I've got my budget and the in long process VQ35HR. OMG! Tony-D, you'd had 2 occasions to get the 432?? Pay off the house with one? Wow... I'd call that rare... Pharaoh
  10. Wow Mark, More amazing work. Yeah I see where you're talking about how the weave didn't lay flat in a couple spots. It's still really pretty. You're doing such amazing work. It looks like you covered your Cowel ports, Are you not running any Wipers? or is that a later mod? Could you post a couple picts of how your exhaust is routing back from your headers? I'm looking at having a 90 deg bend there which I'm not happy about either that or cusom headers. I know you made the tranny tunnel custom, so you're probably not going to have that issue. Again your project is really looking amazing, keep up the good work, I can't wait to see more. Almost makes me want to go on a road trip to visit. Eric
  11. K cool. Does it have the Finned Cover too? Either way it'll probably be better than your stock Differential. Those aluminum sensor wheels are what you'll read your speedo off from. That is if you stick with the stock gauges. Do you have the axles for it already too? I mean the ones off the donor? You'll need the bearing cups to adapt to the 280Z wheels. Keep us apprised on where you are in the swap. Phar
  12. Cool Deal SypherSlayer, I'll post up where I am on the exhaust soon. Are you also going with the HR engine? Post up your thread, we can all lend a hand. Phar
  13. Wow! You're so lucky. The G35 did it's job to protect you and your kid, Gotta be happy and glad about that. I'm happy to see your thread and I can't wait to see how you do your swap. I'll help you all I can. I know you said you're on a timeline, so first things first. Getting the engine into the car and running again right? I was telling you about the McKinney kits. They're not cheap, but they will certainly simplify your installation. My Z I had to cut out the tranny mounting brackets in the tunnel, but on the VQ35DE, it'll mount a little furthor forward because of the stock intake, unless you're going to cut into the cowel like EHOW did. Either way you're losing the stock hood latch, But consider this idea: Move the stock latch to a corner of the hood and get a 2nd one from the junk yard for the other corner, then connect them w/ heavy bike cable and you'll have a hood that still latches internally, as compared to hood pins. Don't worry about the Brembo stuff. (Certainly save it, it's worth more than you paid to buy your car back). Setting that up can be a later project and is easier to move than the G35 body. Did you find the FSM for your G35 online? I'm sure it's availible. I can get you the 350Z manuals, they're really similar. Another couple pieces of advice. Get a bucket and all the bolts you pull off, and any little brackets, just save them in the bucket, you might need them later. Try not to cut any wires, and Label everything you disconnect (the FSM has #'s for each connection) This way when you put it back together in the S30, you'll have an easier time. Remember, at the factory, this was assembled modularly, so you can pull things as units, such as the dash, gauges etc w/ harness connected as one unit. Nissan infinity calls the harness connections Super multiple junctions which is japanese for big ass plug. When you're pulling things out, Keep an idea in mind where in the S30 you're going to want to mount things like the ECU etc. I would sugest in similar locations as in the G35, just for simplicity sake. Let me know if you have any questions, and take your time. it's a big job, but it can be done. There will be mods on your S30. I also might be interrested in some of your spare parts when you get closer to done. Phar
  14. For the cost of the tools and effort in actually rebuilding, not to mention the difficulty of sourcing parts, I would really recommend replacing yours with a used Tranny that would fit your engine. I assume you're talking about a Z car tranny, and hopefully an S30/S130, since you're in this forum. So a good choice is the 82/83 280ZX 5 speed tranny. It'll bolt right up to your L24/l26/L28 and you can use your same driveshaft and everything. You should be able to find one relateively cheap. If you do end up rebuilding, I hope that you'll post some picts and a log of your experience with it. Phar
  15. Hey Guys, Sorry it's been about 4 months since my last update. I've got a kid on the way, so things are slow going. I don't have any new picts recently, mainly because I've pulled the engine again and hav enow been just stripping out the body to get it ready for paint. It's so hard to figure what do I really need to remove, and what can stay and be painted in place. There's a lot of little parts on the Z, so I've started quite a collection of little baggies labelled with a sharpie. I've put back on the Steering crossmember, but I haven't finished a adapter bracket yet to get around the exhaust. The weather is getting warmer so that's going to help a lot. Oh! speaking of exhaust, I don't know if I mentioned this, but I cut back the stock headers to the start of the collectors. I'm going to have a 90 deg welded on there and around the old pipe, then that'll be down pipe into maybe the stock HR cats if I can fit them, if not I'll probably delete. or put in non standard. I want this to be quieter at least not enough to wake the neighbors, so I'm planning mids and a large single, maybe dual exhaust. we'll see.
  16. Hey Austin, Glad to see you back on Hybridz. Question for you. When you redid your headers, how did you get the downpipes right? I mean, I'm trying to setup my exhaust, and it comes off the header into where I cutoff my collector into a 90 deg bend. it's about 2 in from the firewall at the bend. I know you're using the DE headers so yours is different, but did you have really tight bends there too? I don't think I can cut back my pipes any furthor. I get real concerned about heat, especially right under the S30 Brake master. Phar
  17. I believe the Diff you can tell from the stamp# on it, and/or if it's got a finned diff cover on it. The only way to be sure is to open it up, but you can try turning one side and see if the other side turns the same direction or not. This is of course more difficult with the diff not mounted. There's a thread for that...
  18. Wow those Resin CF parts look awesome! Mark is making his own here, but for his race car, and the finish isn't so pretty. I will certainly check out the site, but shipping would need to be freight container. Not so cheap. Especially witht he bulk of the body. But stood on end and crated may not be so bad. once it's here in the states, the freight wouldn't be so rough. I think the tariffs between the UK and US aren't so bad. If you had a contact to ship through mexico we'd get it cheap.
  19. More amps. Well brigther headlights for one... You might go with the 82-83 ZX alternator. There's not much difference with the connectors. I I know there's a thread on here about the swap. If you get it from the junkyard, grab the electronic distributor too. replace one at a time.
  20. Fuel pump sounds most likely to me too. But yeah, need to change your oil since the fuel will not do your rings/cylinder walls any good. Are your Carbs running really rich? Not sure if one was leaking if it could seep into the cylinder. If you were EFI, I'd say it was a leaking injector, but you're carb'd.
  21. Might also check to make sure your hinges at the top aren't bent. Where is it not lining up?
  22. Mainly as I mentioned in your other thread will be the Diff. But the 70 also has smaller fuel lines, so you'll be swapping those out, of course you're also going to been a high pressure fuel pump. Is there a reason you're thinking VG30DET over a VQ? The VG is rated at about 255HP, whereas the VQ is ~270Hp NA. Turbo'd it's much higher. The VQ35HR's are built like a brick with the lattice main bearing blocks, not to mention they're a much newer engine. The VQ37 is supposed to be around 350hp naturally aspirated. As for the 70 vs the other S30's you're not going to see a lot of difference other than the carbs setup and the 280z has heavier duty suspension. They're basically the same otherwise. There's a thread on here somewhere about the differences. Phar
  23. Sorry I was away, The 350Z diff is a shortnosed R200, so that mounting kit will work just fine. no it isn't exacly center in the 350z, but you'll be needing new axles anyway, so don't worry about that. I think they said the 86' 300zx axles should fit if you change the bearing cups to the 6 bolt ones from the 350Z. I haven't sorted that out yet either. If not we can have some custom shafts made. Gotta read more about it, I know the swap has been done. Does your Diff have the limited slip in it? Do you have all the harnesses from the donor? Yo need the engine/dash harness at the min, but if you can get both body harnesses and the door harness you'll be in better shape for adding stuff later. I was keeping my stock harnesses since I want to use the 350Z cruise control which is built into the computer/bcu. Door harnesses for setting up the power windows/mirrors (using S2000 mirrors) Body harness and trunk harness for power hatch opening, and tailights/fuel pump/speedo. I know this is a ton, but I'm mentioning it to save you headache, I have been learning and collecting parts for over a year. Did you read through the VQ swaps and my thread? Have you found the 350Z FSM yet? You'll need it.
  24. Really, there's a lot of different ways you can go with it to make that kind of power. What I'd REALLY like to see is the VR38DETT swapped into an S30. I'm in the middle of a VQ35HR swap, but if I could have in anyway afforded the VR38 I'd be all over it. But as a Nissan advisor, maybe it's within your reach. It's REALLY not cheap though. In a 240Z, especially a series 1, you'll need to swap out the Diff with one from at least a 280Z to go from the R180 to the R200. The R180's are great for stock, but I've heard 300+hp you're asking for trouble. You might also consider going with something with an LSD. The newer Diffs (Z32, Z34 GTR etc) have the timing wheels on the shafts which if you're sticking with factory electronics you'll need for your speedo. You'll need to look at doing some body mods to handle the torque too. not to mention fender changes so you'll fit wider than 215's. on the back. Since with that kind of power and the weight of the car, you'll find it easy to smoke them. There's tons of things you COULD do, but what you do is up to you, it's your car. If you wanted to stick with the V8 idea, then you're going to have a lot more mods to figure. Nissan makes the VK45, VK50, and VK56. And the last in race trim (FIA GT1 racing) is supposed to reach 600HP. Before you do any of that. Look at the platform you're building on. What does your 70' look like, Contition-wise? Is there rust? Are you going to renovate the whole car, or just swap. Will it be a race only, or Daily/ driver? What kind of budget are you thinking? Are you planning on doing all the work yourself? How many hours/week/month are you planning on putting in. How capable are you? Tools? Welding? These are a lot of the questions you really need to answer before taking on a project. lastly, What's your car's Vin? My 240z is 11/70' #5832- and it's in need of a bit of TLC. It'd be a shame to chop up a low # early 240, but it's your car and your $. Read about on here and elsewhere and see what you can figure out. We're happy to answer any questions you have, but make sure you've done a little reading, since we get tired of answering the same questions over and over... PM'ing you on some parts btw... Phar
