you need the half shafts from a 280zx turbo. they have the cv joints. the NA 280zx has u-joints. you will need an adapter for your stub axles. Ross C at http://www.modern-motorsports.com makes a good set. he also makes an adapter set for the Z31 turbo cv halfshafts. that's what i'm currently waiting for him to ship me.
at least take the cv axles. Ross C makes adapters to fit those onto your stub axles. i know stony did a conversion on his car but i believe he had to machine the struts to accept different bearings to get it to fit.
something that works most of the time for me is firstly penetrating oil, then insert your screwdriver and give it a good whack with a hammer. i found it's usually just enough to break it free. no sparks...no explosion.
i was checking them out at the autoparts store and they look like a good idea but the ones i saw say "for show only" i don't know why? but that leads me to believe that they may not be legal (like it matters). the visibility on them is awesome though.
the SDS guys are top notch. they used to run a full service shop and run their own 240z race car ( with a 1.8l turbo toyota engine). they also stuck the same engine with water injection into my friends tr7 about 10 years ago awesome car. they decided to drop the shop and just work on building the SDS systems as that was what they were interested in.
firstly, let me say, i have no idea what is involved but couldn't you get a front clip from an awd skyline with the 6 speed, remove the transfer case and front diff and then fab a cover for the transmission.
Ross is building me up a pair of cv adaptors as we speak. they are for the 4 bolt z31. the only z31s with the 4 bolts on them that i have found are on the turbo cars( all the NAs i've seen have the 6 bolt pattern). I'm not sure what style cvs are in the 6 bolt ones (i'm guessing tripod because the 280zxt ones are tripod and 6 bolt) but the 4 bolts are a ball and cage setup and look MUCH MUCH stronger than the 280zxt axles that are now currently gathering dust in my basement. i got my 280zxt axles a month ago for $100 and yesterday got my z31 turbo axles for $20.
60 lbs apiece!!!! even if you dumped the clutch at 7500 rpm you'd stall the car. i wonder if Ross C can make a kit with 2 toyota calipers per rotor. that's what you'd need just to stop the car at playground zone speeds.
Yay! just one more useless thing to break. although with a couple of illuminated valve caps and a useless neon cell antennae you could probably still outclass the escalade.
i have a set of the z31 turbo shafts they have the 4 bolt flange and are ball and cage. i know the z31 NA shafts have the 6 bolt flange but are they also a ball and cage or a tripod style? I would have to assume the NA and turbo shafts would be the same length? correct me if i'm wrong
I just picked up my bearing package for the five bolt hub today so later on this afternoon i'll throw on the old hub again and check out the difference.
i'm not 100% on the offset. I believe they are the same offset. I'm getting the kit from Ross C so he'll know anyway. I do know that the 5 lug hub uses the same bearings as the 4 lug hub just the oil seal is different.
yes. I'm using the calipers from an 88 toyota 4runner V6. they have the 4 big pistons in them and are wide enough for the 300zxt vented rotors. Ross has adapters for his 13 inch xtreme brakes that will fit the 5 bolt too . maybe next year .
i've been doing alot of research on this topic and i have everything except the MC. almost everyone mentions going to the 15/16 MC. IMHO i would have to agree just from a standpoint that it couldn't hurt. i would rather err on the side of caution.
i was just down talking to ross at SDS the other day. that system looks like the easiest most adjustable system going. hopefully in a few months i'll pick one up.
you can use the z31 turbo (5 bolt) hub and rotor but it is a vented rotor so you need the right year toyota calipers. i have a pair of 88 calipers and they are wide enough for vented rotors but the last pair i had were from an 84 and they would only fit over the solid stock rotor. i think the 86 calipers were the first ones to fit over the vented rotors but i can't be sure. i picked up the 88s because they have four big pistons as opposed to the 86s which had two big and two smaller pistons in them. hope that helps
i just went through my parts for both stub axles and only found 2 washers. i'm assuming i only had one in each as they are different from each other and i had one 240 stub and one 280 stub. they are both 1 19/32 " in diameter and 1/32 " thick but the inside hole diameters are roughly 1 1/8 " and 1 1/4 ". i'm thinking the 1 1/4" one is from the 280 stub axle because that is the beafier of the two. maybe you could find something at an autoparts store or get some made up out of copper from a laser cutter. i can't see it costing too much. hope this helps.
i tried a search but found nothing. does anybody have a list of the lengths for the various cv halfshafts. i have a set of 280zxt shafts but am wondering if the z31NA shafts are the same as the z31Turbo shafts. i know that the NA shafts have the 6 bolt pattern and the turbo ones have the 4 bolt pattern but haven't had a chance to pull a set with the amount of mud in the JY. correct me if i am wrong but is the Z31 NA shaft a tripod setup and the Z31 Turbo a ball and cage setup. if so would the ball and cage setup be stronger.
