Nothing wrong with that! Running flats would put me in the High 10.x:1. Won't be doing that on this motor. I'm just glad I'll be able to get a touch more power out of it.

Woo! Now I really can't wait to get this thing up and running! Might even spend the extra money to do this head up right with a valve job etc. I've never seen one of these for sale. Are they worth anything?

Brakleen not safe for use on aluminum?
xonix_digital replied to xonix_digital's topic in Non Tech Board
I've seen several posts around the Internet about not using Brakleen on cast aluminum Pistons etc. CRC's MSDS lists Aluminum and Magnesium as "Incompatible Materials". So, I ended up actually calling the number on the MSDS and got a hold of someone from their Technical Department. I guess there are no actual adverse effects of using this product on "Milled or Processed Aluminum". Their concerns come into play with aluminum or magnesium powders. The reaction could cause a fire according to CRC! So I guess that answers my question. Sorry I sorta panicked when reading that if I used this on my pistons I would be "in for a nasty surprise" on one of the other car forums, but at least this is here for someone else's future reference lol. http://www.crcindustries.com/faxdocs/msds/5089.pdf -
Uh oh... I just read that Brakleen is not safe for use on Aluminum and I've been using it to clean parts on my motor... Anyone know why you're not supposed to use Brakleen to clean aluminum parts?? I couldn't find any good information on it. I really hope I didn't ruin anything...

The head casting says "N47" as stated above. Here are the best pics I have of it right now. Ports (sorry about the gasket): Plug side: Whaddaya think?

Hey guys, I recently picked up an L28E to swap into my 73 240z. I picked it up on Craigslist for $200 with all the EFI gear and a 4 speed transmission. The motor came out of a 1975 280z so it shipped with the N42/N42 block/head combo. The guy mentioned that he thought the previous owner might have replaced the head on it at some point because it was considerably cleaner than the rest of the motor. After checking the stamp I noticed it was an N47. After I got it home I started looking into the N47 head and the N42 block and began to read a whole lot about how neither of these are the most desirable members of the L28 lineage. Needless to say my hopes were't very high for the condition of the components either because the guy I bought it from was not a Z guy by any means and didn't know anything about the motor. And I paid $200. haha After finally reading through all of the posts in the L6 heads thread (That I had previously skimmed). I noticed something funny about my N47. I'll be damned if those aren't a dirty little set of quench pads. Did I happen to score an MN47 by accident? If this really is an MN47 head, with the previous owner's configuration of stock N42 dished pistons, rods, crank, and the 1mm Felpro head gasket this little guy was seeing a 9.2:1 compression ratio in the MN47's 38.5cc chamber! That's a touch better than the 8.26:1 that it would have had the the Z car N47 and a stock Nissan gasket! Please tell me if Im an idiot or if I really scored. haha thanks!

Still not as bad as the guy who gave up the green ZX. Haha sorry man. I'd be kicking myself for that one.

Booo! They are very rare since they were only made that one year. Damn shame I tell you.
-
1972 they made a silver 240z with red interior. That was the car that hooked me.
-
Looks like the correct answer was $200! Very excited to start tearing this thing down. F54/N47 if I am not mistaken. Too bad its a four speed though. I guess he had just a couple days ago through away the entire rear end of the car... not very impressed. Lol Oh well. I guess I have my hands full anyway.
-
Oh and the 4 speed manual is with it.
-
Assuming that it turns freely and was running fine several months ago when removed.

Im picking up an L28 motor from a 1975 280z. Supposedly everything is attached for the edu but Im sure the harness is cut and sans ecu. I think its around 100k miles. How much do you guys think I should expect to pay?? Thanks!

Here's a paddle shifting S30Z from Rocky Auto. http://dirtys30.blogspot.com/2010/10/rocky-auto-paddle-shift-240zg.html Not sure about that model though.

Happy birthday man. I hope you don't grow out of this Z phase until I can pump you for some more information.... just sayin lol

Nice Z! I dig the color. A lot!

I can truly identify with this thread, except from the perspective of the noobs in question. I have been a "spoon fed" automotive enthusiast for about 4 years. Coming from the Spec-V community that's just how the system works. Someone who doesn't know jack shot (my previous self) posts in complete ignorance, and someone is always there to coddle you into some sort of a resolution. This, as I now see it, does much more harm than good. I am a product of the generation that just has to know how to google, or click a button to get through life. I am that guy. But for about a year, since I bought my Z, I have been learning how to be a little more self reliant (automotively speaking). I owe that almost completely to the community here. The first few time I got snapped at, sure I was bitter, but looking back at my posts, I face palm. I am very thankful for the grumpy old grease monkey mechanics on this forum. I have learned more about cars and motorsports from you guys than I would have spending years on those" cars 101" forums. All you had to do first was teach me how to get out of my own way. And I greatly appreciate that

Ps. ULTRA Jealous of the 280 ZZZZZZAP!

Timeattacks. They will look way better in real life.

Lol. If I found the rat bones I was going to epoxy them into my dash. Now that I'm sober I am glad I didn't find them.

It sounds to me that you have fallen out of love with the car. I say move on to something that you want to build for yourself. That's what the s30 is for me. Finally building my first car, my way, for myself. It is much more rewarding that way.
-
I plan on keeping both since I have had no issues. If you can think of a reason to remove one of them then go for it. I think it depends a lot on your motors fuel appetite and the benefit you think you would see by removing one of them.

I bought a Nintendo Entertainment System

I have always wanted to do this but could never hack apart my precious. I dig the CD rom coming out of the hatch, I had the same idea as that guy. I like your "swap" better though. Much cleaner looking. I've been trying to swap the guts from a game boy advance into my old school game boy, but Im having trouble remapping the buttons. Cool stuff man. -
That's ok. We pretty much already have that in the stickys. And the stickys are starting to get out of hand. Ppl would still be completely reliant on the search function. So it doesn't really solve anything. Thanks anyway!
