  1. Hey guys, starting another project car but this time I want something dependable and something that wouldn't kill my mpg and still have a decent amount HP/TQ. After weighing cost (among other things) I decided on swapping in a 5.3 Vortec engine. Today I bought a complete setup (engine, computer, harness, MAF, etc) from a rolled low mileage 2004 Burb. I already have the engine mounting handled, so that's out of the way. I will prob end up running full length headers too since it looks like I would have to trim too much of the stock frame to make the stock manifolds work. I did not buy a transmission so that means the TH350 tranny I have will be bolted to the 5.3. I did several searches and found that the stock computer will need to be tweaked to work for me (I figured). I have read that the un-used inputs can be 'edited' off the computer and I have also read something about 'pinning'? I made a list of things that would not be used in my case, but I am fuzzy on how this is done..... (please explain both). -VATS -EGR -Speedo input from trans -Rear O2 sensors (no cats) Okay, lay it on me. What else do I need? Any help is thanked in advance. Thanks guys!!

  3. I forgot about that.... its a good thing that I may end up going with Hoosier's DOT drag radials in 255/50/16 anyway......
  4. I think I'll end up ordering Hoosier 26x8x15" slicks, the section width is 9.7" and my street tires section width is 10.3" and they are 26" tall too.
  5. I wouldn't worry about your 'lowly' sbc. I ran 13.2 with a mild SMOG headed 383 in the same car with an open R200 w/3.54 gears. I honestly bet that I'd be running quicker if I stayed with my twin-turbo 422 SBC idea. Then some damn 'professional drag car builder' told me that 'you can't do that', (regarding BBC in a Datsun Z) "...at least not without cutting up the car and motorplating the engine in." Those are like fighting words to me . I didn't expect to run the times I did with my 245/50/16 Kumho's, but I guess they did okay considering the torque I put through them.
  6. Hey guys, I am in the market for a pair of slicks and wondered what sizes have worked for you. I need something in the 26" diameter range and around 8-9" wide. I am also in need a pair of a set of steel rims just for drag slick use. I have a pair of Hoosiers and a cheap 15x7" rims with 4" of backspacing picked out, but what has worked in sizes for you guys? Thanks!!
  7. If I knew I'd run better than a low 13 or high 12 I would of made sure it was videotaped. I honestly figured that with my crappy traction Kumho street tires I wouldn't impress anyone. Who knew the car would accelerate like it did after 1st gear......
  8. Hey Davy, my gears are 3.54 in a R200 vLSD and 4 inter CV's from a Q45, mustache bar and front mount from Techno Toy Tuning and Moser axles from MMS. I knew what you meant from your old post, no worries. I was just pulling your chain, besides who is crazy enough to do a BBC swap anyway.... that's just crazy!!
  9. Thanks. I've had the BBC swap completed for 18 months, its just first time I've raced the car with this combo. I used to race my '69 Chevelle with a 427 BBC to a best of 11.51 @ 117 mph.
  10. Yup, I decided to spend alittle money to get my little Z passed tech. So, I finally got to run my car at the strip last night. Despite having some serious traction issues due to crappy Kumho street tires and having the distributor come loose and back my total timing to 25 degrees I still managed to get a 11.80 @115 mph spinning through 1st gear and the better half of 2nd. Next time I go I'll have some sticky slicks and have the distributor secured then we'll really see what the car can do.

  12. I was getting worried until I got to the part about outfitting the car with the gear to match the powertrain.
  13. Two years Michael? Shame on you for letting that poor BBC sit around like that!! j/k. Updates?
  14. I took a look at a Olds 455 today in my buddy's shop and it looks to as wide as my BBC (454). Regardless it is do-able. An early project of mine was stuffing a 392 HEMI into a 1957 Nash Metro, now that was an interesting swap.... My point is anything is possible, it just depends on how far you are willing to go.
  15. Another run at the top for new comments.....
  16. Digging up an old topic.... A buddy is interested in building a SBC with a 180 degree crankshaft. Does anyone know who would make/sell a crank like that? Thanks!!
  17. Hey guys, I am nearing the end of my R200 Q45 rear diff swap and noticed I don't have the two rear nuts for the mustache bar studs. I am going to run to the local bolt house and grab some new ones, but I have no idea the size (metric) and would prefer not to drag the whole rear diff with me to the bolt house. So does anyone know the nut size I need? I haven't removed the stock/old R200 yet, are the nuts the same size? Thanks guys!!!
  18. Hey guys. After getting hung with things like getting divorced, etc I have finally got all my parts for my Q45 R200 CV swap. I was hoping someone else has done the Q45 R200 swap with the same tranny TH350 (or 200-4R). I need to have a driveshaft built and I would like to know how long someone elses driveshaft is without having to measure for mine after the swap is completed. My BBC is in the same position as a JTR SBC swap. This will cut down on the down time greatly since all the local driveline shops around want 10-14 days turnaround for a driveshaft. If I could have the correct measurements now, I could get them started on it now and my car will only be down a few days since I am doing the swap on the 29 of March. Thanks guys.
  19. Cool, another BBC powered Datsun Z car. Welcome!!
  20. Pretty cool, although I have a R230 vLSD too, I am going with the R200 from the Q45 first because the gear ratio is the same as my current/stock R200 and I like the fact that there are some aftermarket companies making the mounts for the Q45 R200. However, if the torque from my big block 454 ends up killing the R200, my R230 will be going in to replace it. At least the CV's and the axles are the same.......
  21. I bought a received the front R200 Q45 bracket and it is an awesome piece. Can't wait to install it!!
  22. Another run to the top......
