  1. Thanks man, its always been my dream too. I've been collecting part to do this for so long, its kinda sad. I was searching around my storage today and found this BBC Mark IV oil pan. I'm glad too 'cause this pan goes for $150 new. I think I remember picking it up at a swap meet 10 years ago. Anyway, its a '66-'72 Corvette pan, 5 or 6 quarts, built-in baffles, trap door, screen/pickup bowl, etc. Pretty fancy stuff for a pan designed in the early '60's.
  2. I have Pro Topline Rect/Square port 290cc BBC Heads, 2.19/1.88" SS valves, 119cc Chambers for 454 going into my 280z. Great head for the money, hands down.
  3. If I was going to be autocrossing, I would agree 100% (actually I wouldn't go big block at all). This is just going to be 90% drag racing and 10% crusing car. Besides, I already got the heads, 049 GM BBC Heads, 2.19/1.88" SS valves, ported, 119cc Chambers
  4. The check mark just means you are subscribed to that thread. No worries.
  5. Tomorrow I am going to talk with someone about doing the R230 swap for me. He can fab the adapters needed in-house. Just gotta order axles from Moser and source one more pair of inter CV's. Hopefully the install price won't kill me. Here's the big reason I need both a R230 and traction aids. Check this out: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=98860
  6. New motor coming guys. Check this out: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=98860
  7. I think your right Michael....... Check this out: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=98860
  8. The headers are the only thing that worry me. Although I am fairly certain that Sanderson's makes a header that will work. Its intended for a '62-'67 Chevy II/Nova with a BBC swap. They are 'shorty' headers, but the collector exits toward the rear unlike SBC block huggers that exit in the middle. Trial and Error, I just hope there isn't too much of that.
  9. No biggie, just thought I'd ask. Another member wants it anyway. Plan on buying an adjustable collar distributor ($200+) and pair of manifold spacers ($100) if you are still going to use a tall deck block with any intake not designed for use with a tall deck. I just started a thread about my current big block swap into my former sbc powered 280z. Here's the link if you are interested: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=98860
  10. Hey guys, as some of you noticed my screen name has 'BBZ' in it. That always meant I intended to install a big block Chevy under the hood, hence BBZ (big block Z). Here comes a 454. I guess I am going to be having some traction problems..... but its going to be wild and fun. I am still a few months from finishing, especially since I want my roll bar (safety/traction) and R230 (more traction/strength) installed before driving/racing it with the 454. Here's the basic combo. Bottom End: -454, 4 Bolt Block w/ARP Main Studs -Bored to 4.280" (0.030" overbore), Honed w/Torque plate -Stock 454, 4.00" Stroke Crankshaft -Stock Big Block Chevy I-Beam 'TRUCK' Rods w/3/8" ARP Wave-Loc Bolts -TRW/Speed-Pro L2465F Forged Pistons (25.7cc dome volume) 10.5:1 Compression w/119cc Heads -Moly Rings -Clevite 77 Main/Rod/Cam Bearings Up Top: -Chevrolet '049' Large Oval Port Heads, 2.19/1.88" S/S Valves, Pocket Ported -Lunati Valve Springs 73124 -10* Chrome-Moly Retainers w/forged locks and PC Seals -UltraDyne/Lunati Solid Flat Tappet Cam -Oil Pin Solid Lifters -3/8's Chrome-Moly Racing Pushrods -1.7:1 Crower Stainless Steel Roller Rocker Arms -Edelbrock Performer RPM 'Air Gap' Intake Manifold -650+ cfm Holley Double Pumper Carb (street carb) -950HP Race Carb -MSD HEI Distributor Suspension/Tranny/Exhaust: -TH350 Tranny w/Trans-Go Shift Kit -10" 3000 Stall Converter -Nissan R230 VLSD w/3.69:1 gear ratio -Stock Suspension w/Aftermarket Springs, KYB Struts -215/70/14 Tires on Stock ZX Rims -Custom Shorty Headers I have done some mockups and I will still be able to reuse the JTR SBC swap motor mount spacers and setback plates. The 454 will sit in exactly the same spot in relation to the firewall as the 383 SBC. The front of the motor will be approx 2" longer than the SBC, which actaully helps things like crossmember to damper clearence. Though it is true that a BBC weighes more than a SBC, it isn't by too much. Plus the increased power will easily offset the weight gain. I should make around 500HP around 5500 RPM and 550TQ around 3500 RPM on 91 octane gas. I know the motor will be good for mid-high 10's, traction permitting of course. I am upgrading my cooling system with a new radiator from Summit, and engine driven flex-fan. Then there is the fuel cell installation, new 1/2" fuel lines, cutting/adding a MSA cowl induction hood to the stock hood, and MSA front clip. Plus I have to get another custom made 3" driveshaft for the R230 installation. I have my hands full, to say the least. So, I am anxious to hear what you guys think? Also, if you have any questions, please ask. Thanks guys!!
  11. Nope, they are different. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. There are only five common things that swap between SBC and BBC. #1: Oil Filter #2: Starter #3: Cam Lifters #4: Distributor #5: Thermostat
  12. Unless I am misunderstanding your statement, you are mistaken. Silvia's/240sx's (w/HICAS), '90-'97 Q45, and '90-'96 300ZX (non-turbo) only had R200 vlsd's. The '90-'96 300ZXTT (Twin-Turbo) had a R230 vlsd. How do I know? I own one of each. Yup, here you go: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=97369
  13. Naw, its already a paper weight I figured I was making about 300HP at the flywheel. It was enough to smoke late model Vettes and EVO's. That's even with the 3.54 open R200 and 195/60/14 Walmart tires on the stock rims. The motor wasn't anything special. No name chinese stroker cast crank, DynaGear 0.030 hyper pistons (9.0:1), stock/resized 5.7" 'X' rods w/ARP bolts, everything balanced, 1974 '882' casting iron heads w/2.02/1.6" valves (and alittle port work), mild RV Erson HYD cam .430" lift/220dur@0.050", 111 LSA, Performer RPM intake, an Edelbrock 600cfm carb. I shifted at 5300-5500 and ran 12.5's all day with limited traction until second gear (TH350 stock converter). I already have a R230 vlsd and a 12 point roll cage being installed which should aide in traction and keep the car from twisting under load w/traction.
  14. Hey, I have been reading several of your older posts about your 377. Did you ever get it Dyno'd to confirm 450HP? That would be awesome if you have. Anyway I was interested in what heads you are using, manifold, compression ratio, cam specs, etc. Here are some minor details: It will be based on a cherry sbc 400, 2 bolt block (standard bore) that should clean up with a 0.020" overbore (4.145"). The three center mains are being machined for billet steel splayed main caps and ARP main studs will be used on all inter holes. This is being done for the ultimate bottom end strength. Why? Just incase I want to turbo, nitrous, or supercharge it down the road. The crankshaft will be a 3.50" stroke 4340 SCAT forged piece w/400 mains, SCAT 6.0" 4340 H-Beam rods, and 11.0:1 compression JE/SRP forged pistons. The cam will be a Lunati/UltraDyne solid flat tappet grind in the .550" lift/250dur@0.050", 110 LSA range (still deciding). Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake, and a Holley 750 cfm double pumper (tuned and choke horn milled off). I am also seriously considering Dart aluminum Pro 1 215cc heads w/2.05/1.65" SS valves (64cc chambers). I might switch to long tube 1.75" S&S headers and true-dual exhaust at the same time to gain max power. With the fat cam it will bleed off some compression so I'll get away with 91 octane for street driving, but 100 octane will be in the tank when racing (just to be sure). I am aiming for that magical 500HP mark with no forced induction, but I guess we'll see. Any help you are willing to share is welcomed and thanked in advance.
  15. Old thread, wanna see if there are any updates. Thanks.
  16. Last night I went to my buddy's track (private airstrip) to do some racing with a few other choice invites (about 15 cars total). After winning a few races against a few late model Camaro SS's, and a few n02 pumped imports, I was having a good night. Then things went south. Another guy with a white Honda SI hatch wanted to race. I agreed and we lined up. I completely smoked him out of the hole and never looked back. Then 100ft before the finish (I still had a commanding lead), I hear a quick noise (can't remember what it sounded like), then the motor quits. I look in the rear view to see if I was still going to win and all I can see is white smoke. I ended up winning, but the motor is toast. There is water/anti-freeze/oil mix coming out of the muffler and the dipstick looked like swiss-mix. I ended up shattering a piston and bending a rod as it windowed the cylinder allowing the water to get into the oil. The motor would not turn over, because everything was binded up. All of these pics are of the parts as taken, untouched. I am was suprised to see the other pistons so clean. The machine shop said I able to sleeve, I guess we'll see. The crank and the remaining 7 pistons/rods look great. Oh the cam got smacked too because its broken between 7 and 8. The head chamber is mostly untouched. The #8 exhaust valve is bent ever so slightly. #8 intake pushrod was bent and broken, and the hyd lifter 'plunger' was in the lifter valley. Here's some pics of the bent/twisted rod: Enjoy!!
  17. There are a lot more pics on my website: http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/685533/1 I ended yanking the motor and trans to fix the tranny leak with a Lokar dipstick. Worked fine. Enjoy the updated site guys!!
  18. I was going with the Q45 diff since I know where one located. But since the Q45 swap is just as hard as the R230 swap, and I'll be making upward of 500RWHP with the next motor, the R230 wouldn't hurt.
  19. I just got back from picking up my Nissan R230 VLSD rear diff from a '90's 300ZXTT (Z32). I had to drive 11 hours (round trip) to go and get it in San Diego today, but $60 in gas is better than trusting UPS with such prized cargo or paying alot more than $60 for shipping. It has 3.69 gears, which is pretty close to the 3.54 gears I have currently in the stock, open, R200. Just gotta source one more pair of inter CV's, order axles, and adapters. Then then comes the fun part of installing it......... Pics:
  20. I just picked up my R230: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=97843 Hopefully it will be under the car soon.......
  21. I am curious to know what your combo details. Thanks.
