Quick note, I posted this here because I'm looking for a general tech answer, not a vems specific, not a 7mgte specific, etc.. I figured this would be the right place for it.

Here we go: Straight six, wasted spark on a 7mgte, 6+2 config on Vems, problem happens with firmware 1.0.73, and firmware 1.1.70. I foul my plugs in about 10 min of running, due to running pig rich. Plugs 2 and 5 are never discolored, simply covered in fuel. Plugs 1,3,4, and 6, are so fouled you could paint with them. Injectors are getting signal, my LED fires right up when cranking. Coil packs are getting signal, my LED fires right up when cranking. Spark plugs are firing, I get spark from all 6 plug wires. I thought maybe the coil handling 2 and 5 was only firing intermittently or something, so I replaced it (I have 6 spares ). Did not help. I thought maybe I had connected my coil to a logic driver instead of a big boy driver. My rational behind this was that just because I get a spark, doesn't mean it's intense enough. I pulled wires 5 and 6 to compare their spark intensity (seemed the right thing to do), and they seem to be equal with any other spark from a running motor. I noticed today that plugs 2 and 5, when I pulled them, had a little black, as if they were firing, but there was no soot. To me, this means that the plug is firing, the injector is firing, the cyl is getting fuel, since the plug is covered in it, but it's not exploding and causing soot. WTF is going on? Bent valves maybe? It seems like the most logical choice to me so far.

My understanding is that if your turbo car is running lean, it doesn't sputter, it knocks. or detonates.

sounds stupid, but it could be one of your driveshaft to diff bolts sliding back and forth in its hole. I had this happen once, really strange noises, like the ones you're describing.

Washington, drive a '73. I will never, ever get pulled over for pollution. If, for some reason, I did, I'd probably be able to talk my way out of it, I'm 12-0 on pull overs-tickets. Don't know why, but they pull my little z over for everything, and never seem to care about the initial issue. I would totally flip out in your position though. Unless the officer is there to confirm he said what he said, you pretty much have to pay the fine?

Any advice on how to approach this one? Test its functionality before buying it or something? Is an alarm system of this caliber something that I should have a tech install? I just finished a 7mgte swap, and full painless harness in my Z, I have a pretty firm grasp on the ongoings of electrons.

Without knowing anything about anything in comparison to the brains here at hbz, I'm going to answer your question to the best of my ability. My guess is that your 6 high torque bolts have more to do with the flywheel's performance than does the 3\16" dowel. I'd say you're probably fine.

I didn't measure angle compared to the diff last time, so I'm ripping it out right now to fix the issue. I'll take pics when it's out.

It started up this weekend, running VEMS, and all in all it was MUCH less of a pain in the ass than MS was to setup. Have not found any quirks, in fact, VEMSTune is a much better program than MegaTune. I strongly recommend it.

You're doing it wrong. I have enough high current drivers to run 6 coils without ignitors. I'm not going to have an extra 4 pounds of electronics under my hood instead of playing guess and check for 40 minutes playing with dwell settings.
