  1. What I've seen more then a few times is a tubular brace the runs from the mustache bar mount on the chassis to where the transverse link and the transverse link brace meet. I've also seen an "X" brace between the upper transverse link brace mounts in the chassis to where the transverse link braces meet the transverse link. On my old racing 240Z I did the first mod mentioned above and was thinking about doing the second.
  2. PN 38228-21000 Bolt Fix D/S Those are the parts I was trying to get through Courtesy and Performance Nissan with no luck (actually, I got 12). Both tried ordering through Nissan Japan and after two months Nissan Japan said, "NLA." I think there are quantities on dealer shelves around the country so its a hit and miss. I suggest you contact your local dealer first and then work dealers in other states. Pricing varied from $6 to $2 per bolt depending on which parts guy I talked with.
  3. Crawl under the car and look again. The mustache bar is designed to control the torque of the diff housing not fore aft position. The transverse link could use some lateral bracing but making the transverse link braces thicker is an ineffective way of strengthening the transverse link against lateral load.
  4. No, that's my Davy Crockett raccoon hat.
  5. To further digress... I flagged the AMA SuperBike event at Cal Speedway this weekend. When I was working Turn 12 (you can see me for a second at a time on SpeedTV's broadcast) I was amazed to watch the riders brake from 160 mph, skip the rear wheel off the ground, downshift four times, and back the bike into the turn 12/13 chicane. Although you can't see me in this pic, I'm in the corner station at the bottom left - this is the first lap of Sunday's race.
  6. Except for the catch all rule the SCCA has in the GCR and the Solo2 rule book: "If a modification is not specifically authorized in this or previous applicable sections of these Rules, it is not allowed" Basically, if it doesn't say specifically you can, you can't.
  7. I've been on a couple juries, its pretty boring because there's a lot of trial process stuff going on that the jury doesn't need to hear. During the jury selection process be sure to be respectful to everyone in the courtroom. I saw one potential juror get hit with a $500 fine a 3 days in county jail for telling the judge, "You can't make me serve if I don't want to, *******." The judge said, "You're right. $500 fine and three days in jail - contempt of court [bANG]. Bailiff! Please take this man downstairs and book him."
  8. FYI... I still have one set left.
  9. Well, I won't go into it in detail but the HybridZ Admins took over the raffle when we discovered that the result was being rigged. Those involved in the rigging were banned and the raffle drawing actually occurred here in my shop with a few witnesses. I think still have the raffle drawing cards and documentation. Ian was the legitimate winner of the engine.
  10. The 240Z has been raced with SCCA since 1970. Do you really think something as bush-league as that wouldn't be spotted by SCCA Techs and/or your competitors? FYI... I'm a SCCA Tech.
  11. Safety decisions are rarely made in a vacuum. Cost, time, likely-hood of accident (always underestimated), etc. all come into the decision process. People who have never raced competitively tend to place more emphasis on cost. People who have raced competitively and those who have been in serious wrecks place a far greater emphasis on likely-hood. As I've told many who have asked, "Do you want a roll cage that will just pass tech or do you want one that will save your life in a worst case wreck? There's a price difference and that's only a decision you can make."
  12. Having built and road raced a 325hp 240Z I agree with the posts above that 200 to 250hp is about right for a street/track 240Z. As power goes up and you make the required chassis mods the handling curve gets steeper and sharper at the limit. There's less room for error at 10/10ths and mistakes have larger consequences due to the speed involved and the track distance needed to correct that mistake. The situation is not as bad on the street because people rarely drive beyond 7/10ths on purpose.
  13. Yup, 225mm. I ran one for years.
  14. That Mustang bolt-in roll bar install was flawed. They left out two plates because it was "too difficult" to get them installed. A properly designed and installed bolt-in cage will generally work as designed and have been tested in wrecks for decades. Many, many of the SCCA SSB/SSC cars run bolt-in cages and they handle roll overs and big wrecks just fine.
  15. For me, if my bank or your bank charges me something to do a wire transfer, that's a cost that's passed on to you. My thinking is that you chose the payment method so you should incur any unusual fees (from my perspective as a business man). Now, if you're buying $10,000 worth of stuff I'll most likely waive any banking/transaction fees. Here in the US there's no differentiation between debit and credit cards regarding interchange fees. Sellers generally pay the same percent although some debit cards add a transaction fee on top of the interchange fee. Something a lot of people don't know is that sellers pay an extra interchange fee for rewards or cash back credit cards. Its usually and extra percent. So we are helping pay for your airline miles and cash back rewards and the bank agreements say we must not charge you extra for that or even tell you its happening.
  16. http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResources/07_AutoRepair/Engine_Change_Guidelines.html http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResources/ftp/pdfdocs/Smog_Check_Guide.pdf refer to Appendix E http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResources/02_SmogCheck/Referee_Centers.html
  17. I take MC, Visa, PayPal, and have done wire transfers. Credit card companies and PayPal typically charge a 1.5% cross border transaction fee on top of any normal interchange fees. That sometimes drives the cost of the transaction to 4.5 or 5% for the seller.
  18. That's the salt and selenium laced mud that is Buttonwillow Raceway. The car ended up on the driver's side. I think all the mud got shoved into the car when it hit the ground on the driver's side on the first flip.
  19. L24 blocks are common and cheap enough that I wouldn't bother repairing one.
  20. SCCA Regional race at Buttonwillow running counter-clockwise. Bryan was racing in ITR against John Norris in a close race for about 5 laps. Coming out of Star Mazda Bryan had a small lead but John started to gain on him approaching Magic Mountain. Bryan moved left to get a good run at the right hand kink before Magic Mountain and John had caught up to Bryan on the outside. Bryan didn't see how close John was on his left and pushed John two wheels in the dirt, John backed off but his right front tire hit Bryan's car in the left rear door (you can see the tire marks in the first pic). This spun Bryan to the right and he went off sideways. Right side wheels immediately dug into the mud and the car started flipping. SCCA ruled it a racing incident and Bryan blames only himself. No damage to John's 325. John has found Bryan a replacement shell and Bryan and I started tearing his car down last Sunday to salvage as many parts as possible.
  21. How many times do Tony and I have to repeat this. NO CAR IS SMOG EXEMPT IN CALIFORNIA! All cars have to comply with the smog laws applicable to their model year. The only special case is model year 1975 and earlier vehicles. These are exempt for the bi-annual and sale smog inspections BUT THEY ARE NOT EXEMPT FROM THE SMOG LAWS. A police officer, BAR official, DMV employee, the DMV computer (at random or as part of a compliance survey), or a roadside random check can order your car into a smog inspection. You'll have 10 days to get it done and your vehicle will have to comply with all applicable smog laws for its model year.
  22. I have to do them in minimum quantities of 20 (10 sets) to make the price what it is. I will generally wait until I think I can sell 10 sets before I'll ask John Williams to make a production run. I do have one set left after Alan purchased the set I mentioned above. A customer backed out due to funding issues.
