  1. I forget which way is which. If the slot is underneath the indicator that would be retarded right? If so, that's what it was before I changed it.
  2. Yeah really. I will make you a one time offer of $501 (shipped). haha How much do you want to sell it for?
  3. I assume they're flat tops because the original engine (short block) was out of an '82. I would have never thought of it having normal compression since they're flat tops.... Good to hear about the cam also. hmmm Thanks for the input. I guess if it runs well enough then I'll just leave it alone.
  4. Yeah yeah, I did it the "easy" way. And I like his better.
  5. So the guys that put the head and cam on my '81 (before I bought it)apparently put on a p90a head that doesn't seem to be milled (even thuogh they claimed it was from the guy they bought it from) and an E-30 cam which is a turbo cam?! The cam is not shimmed. I tried to mic the head at work to see if it was under spec but I can't really do it well with the head on the engine, it looked to be normal which I think is right around 4.5". The engine has always run iffy under 2k but surprisingly good after that. I thought originally that the E-30 cam was some sort of rare cam off of a L24 like the E-31. However, after seeing this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130118883503&sspagename=ADME:B:AAQ:US:1 I emailed him and he said it was the stock turbo cam.... So now what? I wouldn't mind buying a mild cam for it but not for a while. I do have the cam off of the original engine from the '81. I bought two cars and took the current engine out of another car and I have the original P79? sitting in the garage. I'm getting 20mpg with it to work and back and really it doesn't run bad at all. I'm just thinking with the low compression that it possibly has and a turbo cam, what could this thing really be capable of. It's wishful thinking but does anyone have an aftermarket cam they're willing to part with. I guess I could take the head off and have it milled also if it's not. What kind of costs are involved in that? I assume you should dissasemble the head beforehand.
  6. You asked for it. - if that's not on the money.... - hehe - idea - (no) - twitch - for that special someone - stop (in the name of love) - TMI - Whine - Hmmm
  7. Wait, you blew your other motor? SR20det?? Link?
  8. Wow I like it. No one has done this before? It's soo straight forward and simple. Did I mention that I liked it?
  9. I was thinking it before you said it. Makes perfect sense. Glad you fixed your freeze plug??? edit: oh well nevermind
  10. Also, efi argument aside, you want to heat your engine up more than 160-170. It's more efficient and it also burns acid out of your cylinders which is caused from burning gas.
  11. Thumper, have you had personal experience with not using a thermostat and overheating at idle? I've run two different engines without thermostats for months each and didn't have any problems with overheating at idle like you say. There is a lot of controversy about the speed coolant goes through the radiator. I don't think you can logically say that it's passing through too fast. The radiator is still being heated by the coolant and cooled by air. Heat transfer is still taking place and you could just as well argue that since the coolant isn't spending as much time in the engine it isn't gathering as much heat. I am not saying that I am right, just making a point and sharing my experiences.
  12. I'm not really sure what you're asking but you need to get the engine up to operating temperature asap, hence a thermostat.
  13. Man, I'm going to buff mine out.... some day.
  14. I will compliment you on posting in the correct topic (on the first try). Best of luck with your swap.
  15. Read post #7. I think that's what you're talking about and I've heard of it before (it needs to be in there). http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/small-block-chevy-oil-pressure-3010.html
  16. Well the people on ebay are still pretty proud of them...
  17. So, these are a high 12, low 13 second cars stock? Possibly well under $20k? Hmmmm.
  18. ?????? You've run it before with oil pressure didn't you?
  19. Except for better flowing heads (atleast better flowing than earlier stock small blocks) the rest of the points are marginal IMO. The best thing going for it from the list you've mentioned is the lighter rotating assembly and that could be compensated for by better tuning (and if what was said earlier is true then not running cats could further help out). I agree that it might be hard to simulate and the pendulum of the argument may be just that. How practical is it to attempt this? It would seem if cost was the issue you may as well start off with an LSx style engine. A standalone fuel injection setup would probably cost more than buying a complete jy LS engine unless you pieced it together yourself.
  20. ANY other engine? They're not THAT great.
  21. Definitely make her pay for it. One way or the other .
  22. I didn't think about places where the minimum wage is already high. Actually they're only getting on $.70 raise and then $1.40 for a total of $7.25.
  23. My immediate thoughts were what are they thinking? I'm not going to be able to buy a burger. Prices of everything are going to go up. Maybe my company will give us a proportional raise. I haven't seen anything else about this and they said it wouldn't be in full effect until 2009 with a $.70 bump at some point, another $.70 bump and then the full $7.10 in September(?) 2009. What do you think?
