Slammed Z
Well. Planning on making my Z look like an old WWII fighter jet. Is it safe to run exhaust out of the front fender? Like so, I live in Washington State. Not sure on laws. I think this would make it more unique and give it a different sound to the L28. RB26powered74zcar
I like the look and idea. Not sure about how the law will welcome it...
19762802+2
You'll have to re-route wiring and depending how high you want it you'll run into the brake master, etc. Also depends if you want six outlets or one. six would be considerably harder. Also state exhaust laws could be a pain. Personally idling at a light would look and sound cool if you don't die from the fumes.
padam07
You will have problems with getting exhaust in the cabin. Hell I get fumes in my car coming out the back. I believe in my state (MA) exhaust must exit vehicle behind the cabin.
Leon
You sure as hell will have fumes coming in the cabin if you route your exhaust through the fresh air vents!
Perfect240z
My friend has side pipes out his Z on both sides, its not my taste. Heres a photo of his side pips. It will burn the leg of whoever gets out of the car and doesn't remember the pipes are there...
thehelix112
The last iteration of emwhyr0hens car used a side exit exhaust: Dave
Ptero
I really liked the look of that exhaust coming out the side. Apparently it was pretty loud though.
Tony D
WWII Fighter Jets universally had exhausts out the Center back of the fuselage... Obviously the 510 given as an example is RHD, which makes the modification far simpler!
AkumaNoZeta
If the brake/clutch cylinders are a concern, use a Toyota engine whose exhaust is on the right instead.
GarageRatt13
Im also doing a WWII theme on my Z and as cool as that looks after a while I dont think you would enjoy it. Ive drove cars with open headers and after a while it get really annoying because of how loud it is. Also this exhaust would be pushing all that sound and fumes right into your face lol. But if you want to do it maybe you could go under the brake cylinder and then into the fender and up and out. But this might cause turning clearance issues. But all in all that looks pretty BA lol. johnc
I've done a few fender exit exhausts. Here's a video from the latest one I did for a turbo SN95 Mustang drag car. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6Q8F36ympM Cool for a drag car but they suck on the street or on anything that's driven for more then 10 minutes at a time. GOTHALOSISM
I'm pretty sure all states have it where the exhaust must exit behind the drivers door (2 seater). Only way I can see this being legal if it is not a street legal car, aka track car only.
SleeperZ
I agree, it looks cool as hell, but it would only work on a drag strip. No one would want to drive it for more than a minute.
Six_Shooter
Definitely check your local laws, and anywhere you plan to drive the car. I know for a fact that around here, you'd be pulled over and fined very quickly, because the exhaust is required to exit behind the passenger compartment, or behind the rear most opening windows. It would be better to run a conventional exhaust, and just have vents that look a little fighter plane exhaust-ish. If you really MUST have the exhaust exit there, I would at the very least run an exhaust cutout, so that you can run the conventional exhaust on the street, and the fighter exhaust at shows, or parades. hughdogz
Have you considered running intakes out of the front fender instead of the exhaust? It could give the the look and some of the sound, and still be functional.
The Woj
Without searching, I swear this has been discussed here before. Mainly because I remember a short discussion of this car (not realizing up until that point how the exhaust was routed): READING
thehelix112
Also the new Fisker Karma's exhaust exit right there on both sides, though they are pointed downwards: Dave
Kurbycar32
Im pretty sure Stacy David on Trucks! used an exhaust cutout valve to run mufflers on the street and just dump the exhaust on the strip. you could probably make something like this work to keep everything legal but keep the effect you are looking for http://www.dmhperformance.com/ecutout.htm
beermanpete
I don't know about other states but cutouts are illegal in California.
