RacerX
In my research for "alternative" engines to swap into a Zcar - I was speaking with a High Performance Volvo Tuner this morning. I was talking about the 5 cylinder turbo (similar to the Audi Quattro) and inquired about his opinion to swap this into a Zcar. His comment; put a Toyota 2JZGTE. I asked why and his response was that the Toyota Supra Turbo motor was much easier to work on and would achieve much more power for the cost and efforts. The 5 cylinder is very difficult to work on and is about the same size as an inline 6 cylinder motor. He couldn't see spending the time and money to achieve lesser performance than the 2JZ. Interesting comment coming from a guy who specializes in Volvos!! I then spoke with a Jaguar specialist inquiring about the possiblity of swapping the I6 3.8 liter DOHC engine. I inquired about the weight of the 3.8 liter. His comment; stick to the Datsun engines, Jaguar motors belong in Jags!!! Click! He hung up on me - perhaps he hadn't had his coffee yet. Oh well - the search continues . . . . RacerX

Greywolf
...if you ask the guys at JTR, Jag engines don't even belong in Jags! Ben (Note to Jag lovers: I used to restore old MK, XK and "E" Jags...I liked the Jag engines, but got tired of the owners).

Administrators RTz Posted November 14, 2006 Administrators Share Posted November 14, 2006 How about a BMW M50... plentiful and nearly bullet-proof. Swede's get over 1000HP out of them.
MusPuppis
Interesting.. I love purists, they make me laugh a little. Well, laugh and want to pee in their shoes. Pee while laughing really. Hard to aim.. worth it though. We must be persistent. Always. So many motors. Ive been on a DSM kick.. how about a 4G63? hehe. Hm, What about the 'Busa V8's? Thats pretty damn exotic, ha. SHO motor is a tough little bugger. I dont know if its been done or not. How about something REALLY original, that no on has ever done before.. like a SBC? haha, just dorkin around. Really piss some folks off and build a turbo GSR honda motor or something, hahaha. Get a graphic that says "Datsun show, Honda go!" and then vomit a little bit.. haha. Administrators RTz Posted November 14, 2006 Administrators Share Posted November 14, 2006 I dropped a SHO V6 in my Zcar close to 10 years ago but never finished it. I have to admit, the SHO is attractive. Of course, Nissan makes the VG30DE. But, in a boosted application, the SHO appears to be superior. The biggest drawback is simply that there are no foot-steps to follow in.

Nismo280zEd
I feel the Mitsu 4G63 is Nissan's SR20DET equivalent -in 4 cylinder power production - in my opinion! RacerX I don't know if I'd go that far... the SR20DET isn't that great of a motor honestly. the 4G63 is a much superior block as they've been tuning that block for what like 10 or 12 years in rally racing? dr_hunt
I dropped a SHO V6 in my Zcar close to 10 years ago but never finished it. I really am fond of the Mitsu 4G63 motor especially since I had read HKS was building a LeMans engine to race in the 24 hour race. Buschar(?) mortorsports had a Conquest with a 4G63 setup as a RWD drag car. Considering Bushar motorsports builds Shepards shortblocks and he's making 1500rwhp and in the 7's I'd say that it's a pretty good motor. From what I've seen of the internals it's pretty stout. The oil pump sucks but those big # guys have gone dry sump. Stick with the 2.0 displacement, turn it 9500 rpm all day and you can make 900HP easily with the right turbo and components. grumpyvette
simple rules for sellecting a N/A engine if its under 12.0:1 compression, ratio,, if its got less than 8 cylinders, if the heads flow less than 350cfm AND its under 475 cubic inches ITs probably not suitable! Garrett76Zt
If you were considering a Volvo option . . . I've always wanted to get one of the "T6" motors. Its a 2.9L twin turbo inline six that came in the 99-up (it think) Volvo S80's. Obviously not a ton of ready made go fast parts for it but I think most Zcar guys are used to that. They only come with an auto trans and they are FWD but apparently there is an available manual tranny that you can pick up perhaps from overseas. Prolly alot of work but plenty unique and I'm sure you could get some great numbers out of it.
