dave_hl
yeah i removed the compressor last night, the pulley on it is quite easy to turn though so i can't imagine it wasting much power, if any. Just weighed it then though and its 9kg, just lowered it down onto the ground under the car. I'll pull the condensor today and all the hoses and perhaps some of the other a/c crap in the engine bay. I'm tempted to also pull all the cruise control components seeing as it doesn't work.. but i think i might just be in a bit of a destructive mood and i should probably stop. I am a fan of a minimalistic looking engine bay though.

Guest clockwork
My second post, figured I should raise my hand as 280ZX owner. Although it doesn't get anymore more POS than this. Complete with three matching wheels. And four years of sun with no SPF30, or dash topper.
kiwi303
HGS130-003806 I have the original Certificate of Registration of Motor Vehicle, Dated in Christchurch on the 5.11.87 giving year of manufacture as 1978 first registered in Japan, model as Fairlady Z and Kms travelled as at importation as 69000km. The first NZ owner seems to have given the car to his daughter 1 year and 9532km later. several other owners are listed till 1993, and a Vehicle Inspection certificate dated 15.5.96 is stapled to registership cert. This inspection cert probably is proof of registration as presented to obtain new Black-on-white reflective numberplates to replace the old original 80's shiny-steel-on-black plates. The PO said it had been stored in a warehouse for the past 8 years, and before that was used as a weekend driver until the current owner of that times dad gave him another car. At which point it was stored till when the PO bought it off him. Rust is minimal for it's age I've pushed it into the hayshed until I can manage to get busy re-installing the interior the PO pulled out to check for rust and problems. There's advantages to buying a good condition project car the PO simply ran out of time and interest in. Everything is there bar the engine. Faildigger
First post, but figured I'd throw up a quick pic of my summer project S130. http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/7986/81280zxmy8.jpg Saved it from retirement in a wrecking yard, only problems I have found/know about so far is that it won't pass California smog tests as of now and for the price I couldn't pass it up. Gollum
Do you have the test result paper? I might be able to help you troubleshoot it's smog issues.

BanditJ
I can't figure out how to edit my original post. I took an up-to-date photo this past weekend and wanted to replace the old one but am unable to because I can't edit the original message and now that I removed my old photo from my web site, it doesn't appear in my original message. The photo makes it look better than it really does when up close; afterall, it's a 26-year old car. Below is my 1982 280ZX as of May/17/08. Build date is actually 12/1981, if that matters to anyone. Cool, my thumbnail is appearing down below now too. Double vision!
Faildigger
Do you have the test result paper? I might be able to help you troubleshoot it's smog issues. Well, the sensor warning light is on so first step is going to be checking the all the sensors, most likely keeping an eye on those oxygen sensors, and probably replacing them. I'll probably post any questions when I actually start working on the car. Two more weeks until summer intermission so I can't wait to get started. Most of the common problems with the actual engine didn't show any symptoms when I started it from cold and drove around for about 15-20 mins. The fuel injectors might be leaking or the lines themselves are bad. Definitely going to the fuel injector problem as a priority before I start using it as a daily. Everything looks like a stock N/A '81 280zx, so it's probably all original parts, but the damn thing starts on the fly and idles perfectly. After that, I'll probably start fixing odds and ends stuff; new tires, new seats, etc when I have extra cash. The car is in really good shape, I was surprised when I saw it at the yard being driven out to it's imminent death. Hope to bug you all soon with any problems I can't find through searches. Gollum
The sensor light just needs to be unplugged. I'm not kidding. The actual factory service manual says to just unplug it after the sensor comes on at 30k AFTER replacing the O2 sensor. The plug is located under the passanger dash. The FSM on carfiche.com should have a picture of it. Well hope it all goes well. If you're in the bay area (noticed you're in CA) then maybe we can meet up some time and check eachothers car(s) out. I figure the cat might need to be replaced, although the emissions problem could be a lot of things from what I've read. Going in for a smog test this weekend or the next most likely. Once I get the results I can delve further into the problem on these forums. Well hope it all goes well. If you're in the bay area (noticed you're in CA) then maybe we can meet up some time and check eachothers car(s) out. Thanks, but unfortunately, the closest I'll probably be getting to the Bay Area is this summer when I move it up to southern Fresno area to a garage with a welding set, tools, and the whole shabang to start looking closer at it. Actually, now that I think about it, I have family up in Grassvalley that drive nothing but Z's that I'd like to visit, so we'll wait and see what the future has in store. Gollum
Well grass valley isn't exactly what I'd call "bay area", it's about a 2+ hour drive. But that's still way better than fresno. If you happen to be headed out that way in the future PM me.
Guest Eddy1612
Hey there, This is my first post on this site as my local Datsun site has gone down for a while My Name is Eddy obviously and i come from Auckland New Zealand. I have a 1980 280ZX manual n/a I am itching to start a project on it but can't decide what to do. I have three choices: Turbo the L28 (cheap easy option), Small block Chev 305 or 350 (not too expensive option), or go all out tuner jap and chuck in a RB25det. I havnt done any engine conversions before but im very mechanically minded and have pulled apart engines etc etc Although i do want a fairly cheapish project lol all post some pics once bloody photobucket lets me back in:icon8:

Guest JPerkins
wasn't quite sure where to ask this question, and didn't think it meritted a new thread, so here goes. Anyone know the thread patter for the shift knob on the 280zx non T5 tranny? I bought a pistol grip shift knob and its got the wrong thread pattern and no adapter that will fit. So i was going to go to napa or a local machine shop and have one made, but i don't know the thread pattern to ask for, and i don't have the tools to measure myself. If anyone knows, I'd really appreciat it. Option two is to find a bolt that matches the shift knob, then cut off the stock threads and weld the bolt on there, but thats gonna take a welding machine i don't have. PurePontiacKid
My first Z!!! I bought her about a week ago (last monday to be exact) for $400, although the head was removed, and the guy that took the head off didn't know about the trick with the piece of wood between the chain, so the tensioner popped out, so now I have decided that if I can find one (for a decent price) I'm gonna swap a turbo motor in it Note that THE ONLY dents on this car are on the drivers fender, where the guy's neighbor backed into it with his truck other than that, there is not a SINGLE ding in this car! :hijack:also, the blue and orange car in the background is my car, too. (sorry, but I couldn't help myself ) Oh, and I'm also only 16!

Guest cody
Hi all you S130 fans, My first post from over the pond in the sunny UK. Here are a few pics of my '80 ZX (if I've attached them OK!) I've owned this car since '87 and did most of the work back in '89 when it used to be my daily driver. Now it's just used when the suns out. Fairly standard, with some light body mods, plenty of base bodywork as rust is our big problem with these cars over here, and we never had the ZXT imported over here, although we had a tuning company (Janspeed) who did an aftermarket Turbo conversion in the 80's, which I managed to get hold of to give it some extra zip. There's not a huge following for the 280ZX over here, and forums like this are few and far between, so it's been a real pleasure to discover/re-discover HybridZ over the last few weeks. Cheers Guy's
