cygnusx1
...and I was stopped at light, in my Z when a 17 year old cell phone toting, cowboy, hit me. Pushed in the upper, right of rear valence, twisted up the 240Z rear bumper, and cracked the paint on the body line, along the bottom edge of the tail panel. Wanted: Looking for a pristine, rear, early 240Z bumper that his insurance company can buy me. I will call Hagerty Ins. tomorrow to make sure this gets fixed RIGHT. The way it was before. EvilC
Dave that sucks, hope the damage isn't too bad. I would take the money in the insurance pays you for a NOS rear bumper (Nissan still prices them) and get a front and rear 240z bumper re-chromed. Also price the sheet metal from Nissan and the current market value of the parts. As far as paint....gotta see how bad it is.....glad you didn't kill the kid. rturbo 930
That really sucks! Sounds like the damage isn't too bad though, and most importantly, nothing happened to you.
cygnusx1
Damage is there but visually it's not bad. I am surprised that the body work behind the bumper is pushed in about an inch but the bumper is still relatively decent and from 20 feet it looks fine. Still, it needs to go back to perfect and HIS mom's insurance will pay for it. I'll post pics later. They have Gieco and I have Hagerty, I hope Hagerty works as my agent to make sure Gieco hooks me up properly. Anyone know how that works? jasper
When do they expect him to get out of the HOSPITAL. I'd have a hard time restraining myself................
cygnusx1
The kid was so scared...he was clueless. Maybe he will look up from his cell phone in between texting each word from now on. God, I hate ignorance. My last words of advice as he left were, "learn to drive." When my brother saw the LED light strips I put on the headlights, he suggested putting them on the tail lights too...hmm. Maybe I should stop ignoring him! cygnusx1
PICS And....just in case they deny...paint chips retained!
trwebb26
ZOMG - get a quote for the repair - gotta be over 1.5K - take the money - shave the rear, repaint the back, and spend the money on upgrades.
cygnusx1
Thinking along the same lines....need a bigger turbo!
Careless
not a bad hit at all. the hit i would have tossed that kid would have been a lot worse and more "pushed in". just kidding. i wouldn't really... but it looks like something I will inevitably pay no attention to if it's fixed right. is it the rear valence that took most of the denting? cockerstar
Like everyone else has said -- glad you're okay, and milk it for all it's worth! Prices on a NOS bumper and NOS sheet metal are a must. Also, remember that you have the right to pick a body shop! Definitely don't settle for where the insurance company gets their quote from. mikeatrpi
As they say, at least everyone is OK. You'll get the car fixed in no time I'm sure. Keep us posted on the repairs!
Guest Rolling Parts
Outch! Glad it's not worse since the bumpers are not much more than tinfoil and the gas tank design is worse than a Pinto. That's my fear in these cars... Good luck & glad he had insurance!
jknc90
I got hit similarly a few years ago but it was more on the passenger corner than the middle of the rear panel. Got around $2.2k IIRC.

MAG58
Its kids like these that give one like me a bad rep Agreed. When I was 18, i got t-boned by some hysterical little 16 year old. I got a nice talk from my father when I finally finished my Z... I was allowed to do plenty of things that don't involve keeping my eyes on the road... The include: Checking Gauges Checking Mirrors Giving appropriate hand signals to those not paying attention to the road or the above two options... and that's it! I'd like to apologize to all of you intelligent people who have to deal with kids around my age. You all have my respect for not wanting to shoot most of them... /rant Anywho, Glad to hear you're ok and hopefully you can find some way to benefit from this. jasper
Hey Dave, when all is said and done....don't ditch the bolts that assemble the bumper componets, if you don't need them, I'm interested. Thanks.......
cygnusx1
Unfortunately, driving, is low on most peoples priority list these days. However, more people than ever, depend on driving. I don't mean to rag on the young drivers. There are plenty of other people in other age groups that just plain suck too. They have NO excuse because they should have experience behind them. I just wish it was taken a bit more seriously by the general public. Tom, if the bolts go unused, you got first dibs, I owe you one anyhow. Soundmasterg
I was hit by someone who had Geico about 6 years ago and it was one of the worst companies to deal with. The rep that I had to talk to was in LA (I'm in Oregon) and he wouldn't return calls and kept stringing me on even though his client was at fault and had admitted guilt. I finally reported them to the state insurance board and got it settled within a week after that. Hope you don't get the same experience but despite all their advertising, Geico isn't a very good insurance company to deal with IMHO. cygnusx1
Well, after all the dust has settled, Hagerty Insurance gave me a green light to choose any shop I would like to repair the car. No deductable. So today I met with Melvin Benzaquen of Classic Resto in Pine Island, NY, a Hagerty certified shop. Here is one of the cars that I saw there today: http://www.classicresto.com/mambo/content/view/36/43/'>http://www.classicresto.com/mambo/content/view/36/43/ http://www.classicresto.com He has a bunch of Z's in his shop among some other amazing American Iron stuff. He also does custom swaps, and bodywork. He seemed like he was going to go over my car with a fine tooth comb to make sure it all gets put back to "better than it was" condition. He even spoke about fixing the roof/rear quarter "cracks" where Z's normally crack. So I think he is going to dive into it pretty deeply. The good news for all those in the Northeast, I can tell you with great certainty that, the since my car is officially in paint jail, the weather will remain sunny and dry for the balance of my jail term. The bad news: My Z is in PAINT JAIL!!!!
