Somewhat bummed at 450RWHP, 500+rw torque
Z-Gad replied to silicone boy's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
AKA standard temperature and pressure. I stand corrected. I was relating aeronautical experience where an aircraft (let's say a Piper Seminole since that is what I am flying) can no longer maintain a constant manifold pressure of 25" in a climb at say 4500 ft. The same aircraft, equiped with a turbocharger can maintain that 25" of manifold pressure to say theoreticly... 6500 ft. It would just make sense to me that 8psi at sea level is still 8 psi at altitude. My apologies if I have lead anyone astray.. -

Yes, I agree you will lose hp, but it will not be as pronounced as in a n/a application where you only have the ambient manifold pressure, in fact at low boost levels it may only be marginal. With elevation you also lose (as a rule) 2 degrees celcius per 1000 ft, so air temps will be cooler. In addition, humidity levels tend to be lower at elevation. So, with an efficient intercooler, 8 psi of pressure in the manifold at sea level may be slightly cooler than 8 psi pressure at say 5000 ft. In either case, at only 8 psi, the turbo is not having to work hard enough to raise the intake air temps significantly. At say 30 psi, then that is a different story since the air is thinner, the turbo would have to work MUCH harder to maintain that 30psi and generate much more heat. Regardless, 450 rwhp in a Z is a handful!! Enjoy -
Well, if it is solely for a parts car or donor (engine, tranny, turbo stuff, electronics, etc) for a swap, then I'd offer a couple of hundred and maybe be willing to spend up to ~500.

How much timing I should I pull running 18psi?
Z-Gad replied to Thumper's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
Also remember, not having audible detonation doesn't mean you do not have detonation. The audible stuff is when it is bad... -

Elevation is more of an issue for n/a applications than forced induction applications. As altitude increases, density of the air decreases which decreases the available manifold pressure in a normally aspirated engine. In forced induction applications, the turbocharger or supercharger is able to maintain the manifold pressure (volume of air) at a higher altitude, so horsepower loss is not as pronounced. -
ROFL!! I love that flick!!

Those #'s were on a stock longblock L28. All my stuff is in kPA as well, I was just converting to psi . I still have my old maps on my laptop from the turbo L28 7.4:1 stock compression. With an 8.2 compression motor, you may need to back off timing earlier and more due to the added compression if you are planning on running pump (93). I remember having to take out most of my timing prior to 10 psi and then less gradual after that. If you are starting at 39 total with a 8.2:1 motor, you may only want 25-26 degrees at 150 kPa. I like to err on the side of safety and come up from the low end when tuning. Surprisingly, or not, my 2JZ timing maps are pretty close, but then again at 8.5:1, I am still only running around 17 degrees total at 20 psi. -

Is it stock compression? If so, here is what I was running 35 degrees max timing and had it all in by 3000 rpm's 8 psi 27 degrees total 15 psi 24 degrees total 21 psi 21 degrees total timing This was with a stock longblock (upgraded cam), T72 turbo and 93 octane pump gas and 550cc injectors -

How much boost was that on? You are doing the right thing getting all of the other things sorted out before turning the boost up. I'm sure it is a beast already!! -
Anyone considering buying the twin setup should be aware that if it is off of a JDM car, then it may not be an easy fit for a left hand drive due to steering rod interference... Just something to think about...

That should be a definate improvement over the stock piece. Congrats

Properly, for sure, to it's potential...probably not. Mail order ECU's are great for people who do not want to learn or have the time to learn a stand alone. I refuse to believe that a preprogrammed ECU will get your optimal tune, taking into consideration any porting, throttlebody changes, intercooler flow, turbo of choice, etc. Besides, if you change turbo, or injectors, then you get to send your ECU out again... and wait for them to get to it... and maybe get to send it back again because it was not done right the first time (not always, but it happens). Are there 400-500 rwhp guys running preprogrammed ecu's.. absolutely Would I? NOPE!! just my .02

Really, all of the standalones do the same thing. The main points are base timing, fuel, and degrees of retard (under boost). Different systems offer some extra nice-eties like datalogging, interfacing a wideband, auto programming based on inputs (don't trust it all the time), electric fan control, cold start enrichmment, coil packs, etc For a first timer, I like the SDS. It is easy to understand and you do not need a laptop to program it as a handheld programmer is utilized to input data. It was the first system that I ran in my Z, and was easy to wire in. There are more options now available through them than what there was when I ran mine. SDS also provides a base map programmed into the unit so that you can get the car started... see http://www.sdsefi.com for details... Currently I am running the Electromotive TEC2. It too is easy to program once you figure out VE tables and such. You do need a laptop and the wiring would require a little more time as the ouitputs and inputs aren't terminating at a plug. The TEC2 is no longer in production as they have moved to the TEC3 now. I also have a TEC 3 sitting in the garage that I am not quite ready to tackle. I cannot justify "upgrading" to it when the TEC2 I am using is running flawlessly. These are the two that I am most familiar with. It would be helpful for you to find some people in your area running standalones so you would have some hands-on assistance too.

Once you get your setup dialed in, a standalone will outperform the stock ecu in every aspect and you will have no issues with driveability. The adjustments are made as you upgrade different parts (injectors, turbos, etc), not to mention that you get rid of restrictions in the system such as a MAF and tons of unnecessary vacuum lines running to sensors that you will no longer need.

WHEELS ON THE CAR!!.. heh

Lookin good Gabe!! Your car has come a long way over the years -
LOL yep, good thing... Anyway, car update is as follows. I played a little hookey from studying and dropped the tranny and mailed the converter back to PI for a going through. The tranny I took to a local trans guru to have it gone through as well. He broke down the tranny in an hour or so and took the time to explain each part to me as he wrenched away. He found a few things ... 1. The clutches for 3rd and reverse were burnt up. They were stock clutches and there were 4 of them. They will be replaced with 5 performance clutches... 2. The 1-2 gear clutches were already upgraded and were not worn out, but will be replaced as well. 3. The oil pump showed some wear, so it will be replaced. 4. Finally, the TH400 had the wrong oil pickup tube for the tranny pan. It was too short and under hard acceleration, the pump 'could' have been starving for oil. He'll have the tranny done by mid week, and my converter should be here by the following week. The porting has begun on the head for the built motor as wel. There is a possibility that I could put the new motor, tranny and converter in, all at the same time, should the cards fall correctly. 30+ psi and 9000 RPM here I come!!

Going to a larger turbo will not reduce lag. It takes more exhaust to turn a larger turbine wheel, hence higher RPM's... At what RPM do you see full boost? Another option may be a small shot of nitrous in order to get the turbo spooled quicker..

Looks awesome Cyrus!! I wish I had swing out door bars... I may have to add them at some point. It is a royal pain in the a$$ to climb in and out without them!!

Thanks for taking the reigns James. You da man!!
