  1. I stopped in at Discount Auto yesterday (went in for new NGK's) and the guy behind the pay counter asked me what my car ran. Anyway, I told him and he said, "That's pretty good, but my EXPLORER runs low 11's". I busted out laughing and the guy was serious and went on to tell me how his V6 Explorer took the V8 model Explorer and the guy who had it before him, "must have hooked it up". I told him "No, it doesn't run 11's" and left the store laughing. It still makes me chuckle thinking about it. Maybe I should have just nodded my head, but I felt like I was getting slapped in the face by someone who doesn't know what he is talking about. Just thought I would add another exageration story to the mix

    Head swap

N42 and the N47 heads are the same except for the round ports and exhaust liners in the N47. There has been much discussion about the "evil exhaust liners" in the N47, but unless you are going all out race, then they won't make much difference and may even help with emissions. Really, to increase performance in the car , you need to raise compression. A set of flat top pistons from an 81-83 na 280zx in the set-up you have right now would do the trick, or locate the early 80's maxima N47 head, and that will do it too. Just swapping the N42 for the N47 will not do anything...'shrug'...except maybe make you switch exhaust manifolds.
  3. Ah the fun of owning a turbo datsun
  4. Can't wait to hear how it does at the track!! I know how nice it feels to be behind the wheel of the turbo z again!!
  5. Damon, do a search in both L6 and turbocharger categories and start reading. The turbo stroker is becoming more and more common and you can read up on other's trials and tribulations before beginning your own...
  6. That looks awesome James... What are the specs on the turbocharger? any line yet on the .58 tang p-trim housing for me?
  7. Very kool Scotty!! Now that's a sleeper!!
  8. newer tires...yes (thank you Scottie) Bumpers...no, however he didn't mention it, nor did I
  9. Chuck, don't take offense... If it doesn't apply to you, then don't worry about it. Everyone 18-22 years of age hears the same thing. "This generation is going to ruin..."
  10. That's a heck of a way to gather tools!!
  11. Well, if you are going to use that block, you'll have to use the oil cooler fitting on the side of it unless you are planning to tear the engine down. The oil pressure relief valve in the turbo automatic is located on the oil cooler adaptor and not on the block as in all the other Z's. I don't know how difficult it would be to remove the plug from the pressure relief location in the block. I assume it would have to be drilled out. I am using a turbo automatic block and have decided to just temporarily run a small loop from the outlet to the inlet of the oil cooler adaptor until I decide to add an oil cooler in my n/a car. On the turbo car, I had the outlets tapped for 1/2 NPT fittings and run to a large B&M oil cooler.
  12. Yep Tony, they have been a very valuable resource to me. It sounds like they have been a more valuable resource to you though. Those are some great deals, and you save on shipping.
  13. You could thread the rod on the wastegate actuator. That will allow you to change the tension on the diaphram, or use a bleeder valve, or do a ball/spring type valve. Any of these you can do yourself. If you only want to turn up the boost a few lbs, then I would go with threading the wastegate rod or using the wastegate from an 8_-89 300zx turbo as I believe they were already threaded. When you do start turning up the boost, do it slowly so your pistons and rings don't go BOOM!
  14. I am feeling pretty lucky about the whole deal. All I can say is... "Lesson Learned" hopefully others will learn from my mistakes so they don't have to learn on their own the hard way....but I doubt it
  15. Doug, I used Ross pistons as well in my 3.1 turbo. They were a 5mm dish, 89mm bore, small valve reliefs, though I do not remember the pin height... The pistons and pins were a little over $600 if I remember correctly. I ended up getting a set of chrome total seal rings for another $225 directly from total seal. Anyway, regarding the floating of the pins... they are full floating in the piston. In order to make them 'float' in the rod, the rod end will be bored, a brass bushing will be pressed in place (the bushings had to be custom made for the pin size I received since it was an odd size) and an oiling hole will be drilled in the end of the rod through the bushing to allow lubrication between the pin and the bushing. My machine shop had been extremely patient with me, explaining things in layman's terms so I could get it through my little pea brain how everything worked
  16. Well, I was leaving the parking lot of Wally World last night around 9pm (I still work for Disney part-time) and was a little stressed after waiting tables for 5 hours, but in a good mood none-the-less. I made a right turn at a stoplight and shifted outa first into second, then shifted second to third and was doing maybe 25-30 mph (speed limit is 40) and just stomped on the gas... (race gas and 20 lbs of boost) ... tires broke loose, spun 75-100 ft, I let off the gas and see the red and blue lights in my mirror. Ahh Crap!! Officer pulls me over, is talking through the speaker system in the car and tells me to get out and hold my hands out where he can see them. I get out of the car and he tells me to walk back toward him. He asks me if I was drinking and I wasn't as I had just left work. He asked if I was racing a buddy of mine or showing off to my girlfriend, and I told him no, I was just playing around (there was noone in front or beside me). The officer takes my license, calls it in, tells me that there are 3-4 different moving violations he could charge me with (he threatened me with reckless driving, unlawful display of power, etc) and asks me which I would prefer. I told him that the least expensive option would suite me fine. After a few minutes he came back to me, handed me my license and told me that when he was younger, they would look see whether any cops were around before screwing around. He then told me that this one was on him, to behave myself and have a good night. I drove home nice and goodly like. Today i dropped the boost back down to 10 psi and filled the tank w/ pump gas so I won't even be tempted.. Whew
  17. I have had good experiences w/ my local diesel shop as well. They are pretty happy doing performance stuff here too since it is something a little different for them ...
  18. GSL392 here as well w/ good results thus far
  19. don't forget the 2 little 10mm bolts in the front of the head
  20. When I weighed mine, I think there was a 2lb difference, leaning toward the stroker crank. I did not have any lightening done. I just had the crank magnafluxed, cleaned, polished, and had the rotating assembly balanced.
