Holy crap, it actually started!!!
gvincent replied to deja's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Thanks Dale, I'm ok with the mechanical stuff it is the wiring that has me worried. I have printed out every LT1/T56 wiring thread I could find on this site so far and now I will sift through it all to see if it makes sense. There are only a couple 76 280Z's with LT1 in them and they seem to have been done back in 2003 or so, so all the posted picture links no longer work! Yeah I loved that 396, heads by Ed Pink (elephant) Offy Hi Rise, Dual 750 Dp, Isky cam and rockers etc. I would love to have it now! I bet you would love to have that AMX again as well. Of course I would still be doing the Hybrid Z as well () I can spend some serious time on the Z this weekend, IT'S FATHER'S DAY WEEKEND and I get todo what I want! YAHOOOO! -

From another old geezer...WAY to go Dale!!!! I have been watching your progress as I am also about 4 months behind with my LT1/T56 swap. Yeah, I always tinkered with hotrods but this is different for sure! Not as easy as the Turbo GN motor in the VW Bus I did 25 years ago. 70 AMX one of my favorites, I was running a 396 SS 68 Camaro at that time. Greg -

I found the one Green 280Z!!!! Wow, If I had the money I would buy it .... I would be divorced within 24 hours though!!! Wife can't stand my donor Trans Am and my son's 1979 K series 3/4 ton Mud wreck in the front yard and 2 Z's in the garage While her new G35X stayed outside all winter...... Greg -
Bodie, So are you going to go with the longer Corvette pick-up tube or keep the shorter Camaro/Firebird one. Greg

Yeah I know this post is wicked old, but does anybody know if the Corvette LT4 oil pan will fit the JTR mounts? I am pulling my LT1 motor now and the bottom of the pan is pretty dented, I want to get a new pan and was wondering if there was any advantage to using the Corvette oil pan instead of ordering a Camaro oil pan. Or if there is a difference? Greg

This is the best site ever, and if one has to put up with a few ads or donate to get rid of them then hey that is what it takes. I would be totally lost without HybridZ, It is worth whatever to keep this site going. The contributing members weither it be with their vast knowledge and experience or with money or both are what make this site the best. Donate and add go away is ok with me. Mac plus Safari or Firefox=no popups. Greg

Clive, I know how you feel and only you know what is right for you. That said, you know about me and my project and love for Z cars and how I always wanted to build a V8 Z car, I am 53 now and have owned a Z car since 1982, When my first child was born in 88 I knew I would have to set aside my Z car for awhile and stick with family things for years which I did in 91. But I always knew I would go back to it someday and never thought of selling it. So over the years I gathered parts here and there and went out in the garage occasionally and fiddled around with it. My son is headed to college this fall and my daughter is a sophomore in HS next year so I started working on the Z car again last year and dove into again this fall when I bought the second Z and when we were looking for donor cars together. SO what I am trying to say is go with your gut feeling and do the work/ school thing but don't give up the Z car passion, it will always be there for when you do have the time and the money later. Look how long it has taken me and I am not as far along as you are. Believe me you will regret giving up your passion car as I did in my 20's when I sold my 67 Stingray coupe. Set it aside and work on it once in a while just to talk to her from time to time. You'll have free moments to tinker or plan. Good luck and if I can help let me know. Greg

Thanks Brad, I haven't installed it yet but I know it will go. I really appreciate the help you have given to the Severly Handicapped Welding Wisher Wanabees in stepping up to the plate and fabricating those beautiful RT mounts. Also many thanks to Ron for the design and sharing it with everyone. Jason, Midnightmoonlight has also helped me with my welding needs on my LT1/HybridZ project. Brad, Jason will probably stop by with a Griffin Radiator/Thunderbird 2 speed fan assembly for a top mounting plate project idea we tossed around last Saturday. Other fabrication parts on my wish list: LT1 pulley delete plate to eliminate the power steering pump and A/C compressor completely with an idler pulley and a plate. I would like to avoid the power steering pump gut job if possible. Moving ahead slowly... Thanks, Greg

David, that is sweet, what was the source for the plastic pod? Bartman, that is nice as well, I am not timid so I will drill the dash if I have to as my second choice if I can't imagine where to find a piece of plastic like David's. Both look really good! Greg

Toyota S12+8 myths but need real facts
gvincent replied to gvincent's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Thanks GrommitZ, So you prefer the S12W rather than the S12+8? No performance pads for the S12+8? Maybe I should re-consider the S12W's? Can I use my 280Z hubs and axles or do I need to locate some 70-73 240Z hubs? Now I am confused again... (easy to do) But I still need the .355 or the .315 spacers with the 280Z or 240Z hubs?? This should be simple right??, why don't I get it! Thanks, Greg -
In my search for this caliper I found a lot of statements that say this is a solid rotor only caliper. This is simply not true! there is a wide version with the same marking as Zcarnut pointed out in post #6 of this thread: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=104735 He posted pictures of the 2 different calipers, the 1979-85 4x4 was a solid one and the 1986-88 4x4 calipers are also marked "S12+8" but were designed to fit the wider, vented rotor. Also Waynekarnes posted a really good post on the different set-ups in post #14 of this thread: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=94050&highlight=s12-8 Now the Brake Upgrade FAQ, http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=103767 does not mention these calipers at all, so I searched somemore and that was when I found all the Myths about them being only solid. Well I tried to find a "package" that could be verified and WayneKarnes came the closest in his "Port B" section which is copied below: Port B: Small Four Piston Front Brakes with Solid or Vented Rotors 4 X 4 1/2†lugs. Major parts include: 1979-81 Nissan 280ZX 15/16†master brake cylinder 1970-73 Nissan Z hubs 4 X 4 1/2†lug pattern 1970-78 Nissan Z rotors 4 X 4 1/16†bolt pattern 1979-85 Toyota 4X4 4 cylinder pickup with solid rotor, front calipers marked ‘S12+8’ OR 1984-85 Nissan 300ZX front rotors 4 X 4 1/16†bolt pattern 1986-88 Toyota 4X4 4 cylinder pickup with vented rotor, front calipers marked ‘S12+8’ Eight bolts grade 10.9, 8 X 1.25 thread diameter and pitch 40 mm long with lock washers Two metal spacer as listed below; O.D. 155 mm I.D. 81 mm Thickness 17 mm Four 10.5 mm holes spaced 4 1/16†equidistance The front dust shield must be trimmed to accommodate the larger caliper, bend your old brake lines gently to fit, make sure they don’t touch anything or they will rub a hole in the brake lines. Now what I am confused about is the spacer thickness that is needed, it seems with further searching that many different sizes were given, .500 for 240Z and .375 and .315, 8MM for 280Z's now granted these were listed for S12W calipers which is different from the S12+8 but the 17MM thickness is given (0.66929134) in Wayne's post for Both "Port A" and "Port B" applications???? SO IS IT FACT that for a 76 280Z I need the following: (2) 1986-88 Toyota 4X4 4 cylinder pickup with vented rotor, front calipers marked ‘S12+8’ (2) 1984-85 Nissan 300ZX front rotors 4 X 4 1/16†bolt pattern (2) metal hub spacers: O.D. 155 mm I.D. 81 mm Thickness 8 mm???? Eight bolts grade 10.9, 8 X 1.25 thread diameter and pitch 40 mm long with lock washers Now I am also curious about the S13W caliper but could only find 5 threads that it is metioned in. Comments were large piston area and uses large pads but they are heavy. so this is not an attractive choice I gather. So for decent piston and pad size and weight the S12+8 caliper is preferred over the S12W from what I can gather from my searches and not having to mess with porpotion valves etc which seems to be the case with the larger S12W Now if I can verify what size spacer and where to get them cheaply I will be set to go and Stop. Thanks, Greg

Thanks Clive! David's looks almost factory, how did he do that and what is the plastic piece he used or fabricated? Did he do a thread on that fabrication? Are those buttons on your Momo or your turn signal indicators or both? Those gauges must of cost some $$$, very nice! Is that another gauge just to the left in the A/C vent??? Clever idea! Thanks, Greg

Thanks Bartman, I know I read a thread about a year ago about others who relocated their turnsignals and high beam indicators but couldn't find anything by searching for "turnsignal" I look somemore, If I can find the thread I know there were some pics. thanks, Greg

So what all can be removed and what did you have to plug up? I am removing the drive train in the next week and will start prepping the motor soon. Shopping list: EGR block off plates? what about the air pump? anything else that can be removed? going with one of those cold air/K&N kits on Ebay for intake Thanks, Greg

Bartman, Do you have any pictures of your turnsignal/highbeam indicator solution?
-
A question here and I know I should search this but I have to ask....You guys who put the Autometer 5" gauges in what did you do with the turn signal indicators and the brake warning light? not use them?...I know there is a thread for this, there has to be, it all has been done before right? Greg

Thanks Pete, I should of asked on ZCCNE first, DOH! Is that Brad's Green Gnose behind the Lincoln in the PepperHill pics? Greg
