  1. Blackdragon is all sold out at this point zcardepot has windshields for $150-ish and reproduction (non-oem) seals for ~$40-50
  2. You can grind off the cooling fins for some additional clearance :
  3. you're being quoted $1200 to cut and weld 4 strut housings? That's a rip off. It should be at most 3-4 hours of work, and that includes cleaning the surface and welding. Did Dando's quote you this while physically seeing the strut housings?
  4. Agree with seattlejester: since these parts will be off the car, a TIG will be much better and cleaner than a MIG. Another issue with welding my garage: 15 amp circuit :| (I rent, not own, so I can't just go in an rewire it). So I can get about 10 seconds of highest setting on my MIG before the breaker pops. So, 1/8 steel is fine, but anything higher kind of sucks
  5. Actually there's a guy in Antioch name Tony (True Pig Motorsports) that is currently building bolt in and weld in rollbars for Zs: https://www.facebook.com/TruePigMotorsports/
  6. I'd say just bring your strut housings to Dando's. That's what I did with my coilovers back in the day; they just ground off the stock perches and welded on the GC ones. I don't see this being much different than sectioning strut housings. In fact, it's easier. Since you work across the street (I assume big T), just bring your strut housings with coilovers, maybe they'll get a better picture with physical pieces in front of them. I'd like to help, but as I said, I am not comfortable enough with my skills to trust safety of suspension components and another individual's life. (Plus, it'd probably be an ugly weld)
  7. Not too familiar with McKinney kit, but I am guessing you have to chop the strut housings and weld on the MCK kit. They should be able to just do an estimate based on parts, so you should be able to just bring them strut housings without anything else. Looks like it's just a shop and weld-in? Does your kit also have the weld-in camber plates? Maybe that's why Dando's is telling you to bring the car in. Weld-in camber plates require cutting out parts of your strut tower and weld in the plates.
  8. I'm still learning to weld, but I do not trust my skills against someone else's life, if that makes sense. I can tell you that Dando's Automotive and Z-car garage can do it. Dando's did my coilover perches way back when, however, this was over 12 years ago.
  9. Two 2x1 16 square tubes will be welded horizontally across the spare tire well area linking both frame rails together. The camaro tank mounts will be attached to those. JoeK welded his in, however, I may opt to go for a bolt-in solution. For pictures of how he did his, see this thread, post #19 will have all of his detailed pics: http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/122138-slow-build-240z-ls1mn12-build-thread/
  10. I still have to cut out the remnants of old cell mount (forgot to get more sawzall blades today, was focused on getting this done) and weld in additional 2x1 16ga tubing for support to the car. Didn't finish that because I ran out of material, so that'll have to be done later after I make a steel run during the week Welded up. (don't laugh at my shitty welds, but they'll hold)
  11. Thanks for the link. My friends built a 912 with an STI motor, and tribute to johnc was nice
  12. Are you planning on using it as a donor car for your Z or a daily driving it?
  13. Adapting autometer gauges to my Z and I need a couple of broken clocks from a 240z, or even just their empty shells. Also need a plastic speedo or tach housing pod/cone. Let me know if you've got some lying around you're interested in getting rid of and what you'd like for them Thanks!
  14. I did the following on mine: thermostat rear main seal oil pan gasket (replaced it with c6 pan, so i had to change the pickup, o-ring, windage tray, etc) clutch slave and T/O bearing pilot bearing oem LUK clutch, flywheel, PP ($240 shipped from rockauto) injector o-rings (2 per injector, I think I got SK14 from rockauto: http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1354128&cc=1313913&jsn=434 ) I will probably also do water pump while the motor is out, but my motor is from an 02 with 28k miles on it. Is this the part you guys are using as replacements? (there was something about waterpumps being changed to newer part numbers in 2004?) http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1299071&cc=1379976&jsn=549 Definitely get the blind hole puller and race driver set from autozone (free rental) if you don't have these. I tossed the pilot bearing in the freezer overnight and the entire pilot bearing change took me about 5 minutes
  15. Huge thanks for JoeK, he came down with his hoist and we got the car up: Now i'm taking a breather from pulling the rest of the stuff off it. Still need to get a piece to tie the lower portion together as mentioned earlier by Joe and belated johnc
  16. Either mine or DavyZ's photos from 2001. It was owned by Hoover at that point, if I recall correctly. You can also spot a number of former HybridZ members in the photos. (alsil, jumbo240ez, 73botiz)
  17. I'd buy it right now if I had somewhere to store it
  18. Don't go with 10-15 year old LS1 or LS2, jump straight to LS9. It's the stock motor in the ZR1 corvette and comes with a supercharger from factory. This already solves your twin charging problem. It's really easy from that point to just swap in a pair of turbos (mount one in front, one in the rear by the axle, more clearance), and you should be able to reliably push out close to 1200 rwhp. LS9 will also fit with the stock hood, no modifications necessary and the t56 bolts right up to it since all GM components are interchangeable, and due to Corvette mounting, the adapters to bolt it to stock cross member are really easy to make. The Z's mouth is big enough to mount the intercooler as well, just use the stock vent openings in the radiator support to run 3" piping. You may have to trim a little bit to get it to fit correctly.
  19. I can't add anything else anyone else hasn't already said. I've met John several times. He's always been an upstanding member of the Z community and I'd run out of paragraph space just trying to write out what I learned from John since I've signed up for HybridZ 15 years ago. I talked to DavyZ tonight to let him know as well. We'll all miss John dearly.
  20. Very nice. I need to come up and get some ideas from your build. Of course, they'll be executed in a much poorer fashion
  21. Agreed on tie-in! Planning on doing just that, Mat and I discussed it during the build. JoeK: I am in the same boat as you with the hoist situation. I want to use 2 hoists on the car. Since you're local, I can loan you my hoist (and help you with it) so you have 2 to get the car off/on, and I can use yours to get mine up in the air. Downside is that I don't have a truck, but if you do, this can be simplified quickly. Shoot me a PM if you're interested. Regarding the 914, He picked up a bare shell for almost nothing. No bodywork, engine, etc. Just a box of suspension parts and rust. Cage and floor pans are welded in for the most part, he's working on suspension and engine mounts now, It's receiving a Subaru wrx motor that you can see in front of the car in one of the pics He and his brother also swapped an STI motor into a 912. The full build thread is here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/488187-help-me-style-beat-up-old-912-a.html
  22. Front and rear bolted up on the first try: The reason that's somewhat important is that the rotisserie was built 30 miles from my Z.
