  1. This is an updated version of my ignition timing map, from dyno tuning this last weekend.
  2. I know you have heard this already, but thanks for all the information you have posted in this topic. I obviously would like to have one of your heads, but I just don't have the $$$. Maybe if I decide to sell a testicle or something...........
  3. Honestly I use Bing/Google search for ignition timing maps for any possible info I can get. your best bet is a dyno tune session, and be able to actively tune your ignition during actual load conditions. I did this yesterday, and was able to eek out another 20 rwhp, and pull some cruze fuel load out. I should be seeing about 20mpg in stead of 15mpg at cruze. My Z cruzes @ 64mph @ 3000 rpm, so I took the time to clean up that part of the engine dynamic and ignition timing. My engine now gets between 40 deg and 35 deg timing, between 12inhg and 18ingh. That's the sweet spot for my cruze dynamic, and the wide band on the dyno pegged right at 15afr on a light cruze @ 60mph. That cost me 85$ for 1 hour of dyno time. it was worth every penny!!!
  4. the real trick with this is suggestion is that cooling dynamics differ between the chassis/engine combo. I.E. your going to need different cooling on a V8 Z vs a L6, yes?? so this could get difficult real quick unless a poster is specific, EXACTLY specific on the application, and the cooling requirements there in... I suppose A sub-forum for cooling could be added to the different engine sub-forums already on HBZ. However I see the amount of work that could take just modifying the HBZ page itself.........
  5. I would like to suggest a coolant system sub-forums. This would be specifically just for radiators/water pumps/ heater core/ a/c unit... Unless there is something already that I don't know about around here???
  6. think of it this way.... Ignition timing is a dynamic of fuel load. when your cruzing down the freeway, you don't want a heavy fuel load (rich). so what you can do is ADD ignition to a particular engine running dynamic like this. 60mph in 5th gear and say 15 INHG vac, you would want to burn a bit lean by your VE map for the injector fuel pulse AND how much ignition timing to burn off that bit of extra fuel you don't need. I have seen some ignition maps with about 40 deg +/- 5 deg total timing at 3000 rpm with about 12 to 15 INHG vac AS your system builds boost you want to LOOSE timing = richer fuel load = attempt at removing ping. However you can only add so much fuel, and remove so much timing to avoid ping that your engine will loose power!! be safe with them ignition maps. learn to read your engine. there are many things you can do to help with staying away from the ping monster!!
  7. My blow thru holley didnt like water/alcohol spray, so i went with a/c cooled intercooler
  8. I have been using a similar system for over a year now......works good
  9. this is a pic of my ignition timing map for my 123ignition programmable distributor. I start at 20 deg at 500rpm, and advance up to a total of 36 deg at 3000rpm. I do not tune for any vac advance yet. I start to pull timing at 0 inches vac (100kpa) all the way thru 15lbs boost. so at wide open throttle (WOT) and 15lbs boost my timing is only 20 deg. just know my setup is not fuel injected. you can try bing image search for megasquirt timing maps, I found a lot of useful information that way. every engine is different, and so is the ignition and injection tune. NOTE: if you are not boosted the most VE is only about 78-80% depending on how much head work you have done, or had done. Stock Z heads are not known to have a good VE (volumetric efficiency). when I was using megasquirt FI the best VE I had at WOT was 80% and I have some light head work/port matching/custom valves......
  10. I keep mine at a maximum of 20 deg advanced @ 15lbs boost, however my Z is NOT fuel injected. I found some megasquirt timing tables around here some where that showed some timing curves. What I seen was about what I run in total timing under boost. I did see a few that were at 17 deg timing at 15lbs boost as well. IF your still unsure, play it safe. IF you don't play safe or tune to aggressive then you go BOOM!!!!
  11. I have a solid regrind cam and rockers from Delta. I followed proper installation guide lines, per the Datsun engine rebuild book. I used the red snake assembly lube. I never used conventional oil to run in the engine. I only use AMS oil 30 wt synthetic. My cam and rockers look fine, and its more than 10k miles now. The guys at Delta were great, and full of all kinds of information. Boy am I glad they are local for me!!!
  12. Just look up my name here for posts on blow thru turbo. My setup is on a holley 4bbl, so about the same.
  13. That e30 is for the "factory stock" 30 series race scene. The guys have been wanting me to get into that car for a while. Unfortunatley i dont have the $$ to go racing ;-/ At least i get some track time with test n tune days!!!
  14. Stopped by a friends shop today and got to check out his m3 race car The new DTM 3.9L inline 6 will replace the 3.2L Unfortunately i was not permitted to photograph the new head going on the 3.9L the head machinest was super protective of his work ;-/ Suposed to be 396 rwhp and 305 torq @ 8500rpm and can spin to 10krpm! Im foaming at the mouth, why??? Very soon i get to dirve the beast!!!!
  15. My little brother just purchased a 3d printer and we are starting to make small parts. Right now my project it to make a replacement plastic part for the blinker assembley. Some may know the part in question, its the one that holds the blinker arm and allows the switching motion. Mine is worn out, so we take 3d pic and pull that image into the pc. Then we will remove the grooves worninto it from use, then print the new part. Its not that easy, but you get the idea!!!!
  16. no fused bone and what not. the dr and I have a plan A/plan B thing. plan A involved removing some disc material, some bone off the vertebra, and repairing part of a broken framen. if plan A doesnt work, then there is the ugly plan B. I dont want to even think about that!!! I did get a lawyer, and she was like a child in a candy store when I explained what was going on. my whole case was mis-handled and I have all the proof in paper and electronic communication. I can at least feel my feet again, so thats a good thing. I'm just going to assume this legal mumbo jumbo is going to take quite some time.
  17. Actualy i picthed everybody involved as much hell as i could throw at them. 9drs, 3 chiro, 2 phys theripst, L and i too. Nobody listened until a friend hooked me up with the highest ranked neurosurgon in the PNW. He took 1 look at my mri and said congrats you broke your back, you need emergency surgery-now. Im gona scrub up, call who you need to, my people will be in here in 15min to prep ya. The dr did this for free, he new i was in trouble- big trouble. I will also be getting free legal assistance, gona go after the jerky dr who said i was fine, and the dept of L and i for failure of due process. My company fired me for failure to show up for work. How can i show up for work if im getting major lower back surgery!!!! Dont ever trust what 1 dr tells you, get other opinions, and if they dont seem right- keep looking!!!!!! I walked around for damn near 3 months with a broken back, and had to fight for my own health. I refuse to go down without a fight, ever. The best part is i have been dealing with this with NO pain killers, keeps me motivated. I just got home from surgery, cant wait until monday to talk with lawyer. This gona be fun!!!!
  18. Thank you for your effort!!!! I always find more ways to spend money on my Z everytime i log onto HBZ!!
  19. None that I know of that don't cost $$$$$ and or what you have already stated. There is only one shop I have ever done business with, east hill tire in Kent, some 30 miles south of Ballard. Most of the "shops" around Seattle are bolt on type tuner shops, not all shops are like that, but most are. Unfortunately your mom owns one of the most looked for tuner cars in the area. Better off getting a corolla or civic ;-(
  20. I was wondering what happened to that setup of yours.....
  21. I have been tuning my Z the last day or so and changed my timing map around a bit.....
  22. So my dumb ass herniated 2 discs in my lower lumbar at work. That's what I get for moving peoples heavy belongings for a living, it was sure to happen. I have seen it happen to other fellow employees over the years. I thought I would be able to avoid it happening if I was to use the best possible lifting techniques along with keeping in good physical shape. Sadly this was not true. The damage so far is I am unable to walk, and my right foot is starting to turn purple at times. The worst is the constant and unrelenting pain. The crappy thing is dealing with L and i in washington state. These bastards are debating wether or not its worth me having an operation to provide a better possible outcome to life style change, or just leave me stuck in a wheel chair. I went to my personal dr and they cant help due to the l and i case. Im like wtf, i cant walk you #########. Got thrown out of dr office. Being unable to work means no income to pay bills. I sold off my datsun pickups and was able to have enough $$ for rent thru january. Whats better is l and i is not paying for any of my perscribed medication. Talked to a lawyer, they wont do anything until l and i closes my case. Only then i might be able to sue. Might have to start striping the blow thru z for parts to sell off. Crap!!!!!! Im open to suggestions, comments.......
  23. If you are capable of doing your own wrenching and modification, you could go get a CIS fuel delivery system from a1980's model VW and retro fit an old 4 bbl carb to fit the injectors. Even better if you found the right parts for cheap is find the old dual carb intake for the z, get 2 throttle bodies of the right size and retrofit the VW injection system to that. The stock VW CIS injection system is simple mechanical injection, and uses NO computer. Stock it is capable of supporting 200 engine HP. Even better is that Volvo had the same system but has 6 injectors instead of 4, so did older Ferrari sports cars. The CIS mechanical fuel injection system is the easiest fuel injection system in the world to work with.
  24. I have received many pm's about what timing map I have programmed in my 123 ignition distributor so I'm posting a screen pic. Please note that my 280z is turbo charged and the map shows boost timing retard. Also know that even if you program your ignition system to my posted map, it may or may not work well with your system, as all Z engines are never the same. I set the rev limit to 6000 rpm's. I set the map input to start at 2000 rpm's.
