Why did you decide to stay with the Datsun L6 motor?
240zip replied to logan1's topic in Nissan L6 Forum
I stuck with the L6 (2.8L) in the 240Z because it simply looks right in the car, sounds good with triples, and is easy to work on. I upgraded to slightly more modern electronics (Pertronix and MSD). I used a vintage 'Filter King' regulator / filter and like how it's working out. I put perhaps $3K into the motor if you include the rebuild, triples, and head work. I've yet to put it on the dyno. Simply driving it around, it's plenty fast for me and a great set-up with the 5 speed and 3.9 R180 LSD which came from a STi. -
My 240Z sat a while (year) while being restored. The fuel gauge seems to go from correctly showing the tank fuel level to zero. It was stuck at 3/4 full then I went over a bump and it dropped to zero, then it slowly moved up and then seems to drop down (quickly) and then slowing move up. What is likely wrong. Sending unit, wiring, fuel gauge? I'm tempted to replace the sending unit, but it will be a serious pain to drop the tank. Are there other likely culprits I can check first? Thanks in advance.

New low rise kick panel speaker pods in development
240zip replied to Derek's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
Derek, I'm very interested in the lower profile panels having discussed them with you earlier. I'm more than happy to be a tester. PM me with the price and shipping to 80542. I'm good about posting pictures and such. -
with my company, long-term (meaning 1 to 2 year) international assignments are a sweet deal. they're hard to come by these days, but I've had three. you just need to have a very niche skill and be good at what you do. but I agree with Tony, the business model has changed and many people are doing the contractor thing. i see it with gov people taking retirement and then coming back as contractors at 2x their former salary plus retirement benefits and pay from their old job. France is just an incredible place. I did a short assignment in Paris and fell in love with the place. You need to go outside of Paris to really experience France. And yes, the food and wine really are that good.

Well as far as Finland is concerned, they don't have to worry about health care and retirement. And people tend to have fewer cars. On Japan, the person working 12 hours a day did say he was working 1/2 time now that he was older and established. It was a joke, but I knew that managers worked insane (like 18 hour) work days there. I was given the opportunity for an assignment there and turned it down. Sweden was a better assignment. When I worked more than 8 hours a day my manager asked me to work less because she was concerned I was working too hard. Let's face it ... we have it lucky in America and from a car perspective, there really isn't a better place to live. The Aussies have it pretty nice, but having traveled a bit, I'm always glad to be back in the old USA albeit in an old Japanese car ...

We're parting a complete 240Z and do have what appears to be a complete engine / body / dash harness. I see on eBay that these are going for insane amounts. I'll post them in the classified section when we're ready to sell. I'll drop you a PM and give you first crack at the item.

When I did my car, I looked at it in this way ... for what I have in the car, I could a get a new Kia. Why the heck would I want a new Kia. If you have a rust-free starting car, the rest comes easy.

'worth' vs 'what it would sell for'. I personally wouldn't pay $5K to $7K for the car. The closer the exterior and interior are to stock, the more it tends to bring. The better the swap, again, the more it brings. I assume the stock ECU. I'd say a realistic price it would bring is around $4K. A good swap must address the suspension, brakes, and the drive train. If the car had a T5, R200 CLSD, EMS, and upgraded suspension, then $7K is possible. You'll never get what you put into a resto-mod out of a car. It's too personal. If you do a $30K resto-mod ... perhaps you'll sell it for $18K.

On the engine, you can see some of the plated parts here. Not everything was done ... but just shows you how it looks mostly stock, just new I like your idea of a ceramic coated intake. It's something I might consider doing one day.

OK ... on the bolts. If you're bead blasting them, go the extra mile and tumble polish them (a vibration polisher costs under $100 at HB) and then get them cad plated or yellow zinc chromate. My source would do every bolt on the car for around $100. PM me if you want the source. He charges by the USPS box ... fill up the box and then you get it back all nice and plated. The key is giving them clean bolts. If you polish them it looks incredible. I would never powdercoat a bolts. When you torque down on the bolt, you'll loose the coating or chip it. The chromate / yellow zinc is a superior solution. But hey ... its your car. I'm just offering my opinion here. The bolts below were yellow zinc plated and the suspension was powdercoated.

Finnish slang is rather difficult to translate. There are multiple ways of saying that phrase. Likewise with Swedish. In Swedish you can say, 'lend me some steel so I can chin some meat' and that's like 'give me a buck so I can buy a burger'. Often Finns will swear in English. Very few curse works in Finnish. Finns have an interesting sense of humor. Saying it's dry is an understatement. But they're great hosts. But I can say that about nearly every country I've worked in. Sweden, Finland, Russia, Moldova, Japan. Japan is nice, I'm just not into the 12 hour work day and 6 day work week. And 12 hours a day was considered light.

just a little something. I used the Zcar creations SS bolt kit on my engine and it plays off nicely on the powdercoated parts. Personally (after looking at yours) I'd go with the blue and red colors. They're really nice.

wiring harness for the whole car or for the dash ... both?

I understand some Finnish and have native speakers in my home - we have absolutely no idea what 'Buska Paa' means. The only thing I could think of was musta paa which could be something like 'black daddy' and that just doesn't seem right. But technically 'daddy' is isi not Paa in Finnish so I'm at a loss. From a language perspective 'buska' is much more Polish than Finno-Urgic. We just don't have words that sound like that.

I'm not a fan of the multi-colored valve cover. Once it's installed, that's the main thing you see. I like black crinkle (but it's hard to clean) or gray (which is what I did). The polished metal covers look nice, but tend to get dirty quickly and are again a pain to keep clean. I would have gone with the metallic blue and kept the colors to one or two (like red and blue). On the black for the engine. While nice, it's impossible to see the oil leaks. I'd select a color where you can see leaks (like blue or silver). I also powdercoated my front timing cover. I matched it to the valve cover. But kudos on the wild colors. It's your personal choice.

In Finland (another place I haunt) they have a real appreciation for older American cars. Actually Finns just plain love cars and racing. What I don't quite get is the whole gas issue. I mean gas costs like $7 to $8 a gallon. That's one reason you see these 1.2L engines. And older American cars are lucky to get 12 MPG in a free fall. The final issue is with speeding tickets. It's tied to your income. So rich tycoons of industry really get soaked for minor speeding tickets.

I was living in Sweden and imported a car there (it was an MG Midget). They loved the fact that it was a rust-free car and a convertible (completely impractical). One weird thing happened on the container ship. When I got the car in the port, it had the freeze plugs popped. A real pain to put back in at the port. I suspect they were looking for something inside my engine block.

Is it possible to find alternate first gears for the Nissan BW T5? Does anyone have such a source?

Seems this was covered perhaps 5 years ago ... http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php/topic/29444-tripples-and-fuel-smell-help/page__p__756988__hl__%2Bheat+%2Bshield+%2Btriple__fromsearch__1#entry756988 Not exactly the same as mine are Webers. It didn't come up in the search due to the spelling issue. What bothers me is that it seems he never solved the issue but rather went on to a v8 swap. I've seen this a few times. People get Webers (or some similar set of triples) and then dump them for v8's or a L28ET. I completely understand this need - hence the reason I'm building a separate 240Z with an L28ET.

I owned a 914 and I recall the seats were not that comfortable. I do think they'd sit lower than a stock 240Z seat, so if you're 6'4" or something that might be a consideration. The 914 seats are a bit like the JDM racing seats. The seats I've thought would be nice are the leather ones from the S2000. I've seen a few on flea-bay and craigslist. I have to wonder if they're "hot", but some of them had head rest speakers which I thought were nice and they're very comfortable. Likely a lot harder to fit into a 240Z.
