building a turbo header w/ sched 40 weld pipe
veritech-z replied to OlderThanMe's topic in Fabrication / Welding
I tried to use home depot pipe fittings to make mine....(looks around shiftily...)....I've had better ideas than that, for the record. -
I heard an anecdote from a guy that used to oval track an older corvette. He said he'd angle his exhaust so that it would be exiting in the direction of the wall, that way the echo would make for this super loud, intimidating rumble. Psych warfare, basically. Maybe this is something like that?

Taking you guys back to my punk RAWK roots! The Refused, New Noise http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31EMSCNZzU8 these guys were the first show I went to without my mom (first show ever was Aerosmith and Brother Cain, mom took me to that one) Shutdown, Ensign, and Fastbreak were also at that show, though they were nobody at the time... Snapcase, Caboose

If you think THAT's good, you should see the one of the ghost using the urinal that I have at my mom's house (on display no less!)

Yes this is a real photo, I took it with an Olympus OM10 35mm slr on Kodak tri-x B&W film...printed it myself too, but the scan is kind of crappy... These are with a polaroid 8megapixel P&S from the St. Pete Grand Prix this year: I've got some more, let me see if I can dig up some worth posting. I'll be in vegas all next week, so I should get some decent ones from there as well.

dscott@shourimotorsports can get you those. Check the vendor forum for the 432 headlight covers thread. Skillet, that's not too bad. What kind of art program are you in? You know the warhol prints were supposed to represent the commodification of those personalities, kind of a biting social commentary...I think when teachers randomly assign "do a picture in the style of..." projects, they are doing a dis-service to the student if they don't explain the social context of the original image making (I don't know if that was accurate in your case here or not, I've got a bachelor's degree in studio art, so I've seen that type of thing happen before, that's all).

I tried to do this, I was just going to make a modified log that seperated 1-2-3 and 4-5-6 into a split flange, but it didn't come out so well...I cut it off the old header flange I was using, and haven't decided if I'll try to make it again... -
These guys were one of the best live bands I've ever seen...too bad they broke up. Coolie ranks, the lead singer totally destroyed his vocal chords, and I'm pretty sure the drummer died...

Not in the Magnum Z.I. it's not! Pedal to the metal baby!

Custom N-42 intake with MS ECU and Distributorless ignition…

Does this mean that the twin superchargers are go? -
I'm thinking this is supposed to be a Mach I throwback now...I wish the camaro would do that, throwback to the second gen camaro. I love that bodystyle, especially the early split bumper models from 70-73. At least the second gen camaro was an original looking design, not just a mustang clone like the first gen was. As for this concept, I'll wait until it hits the streets to pass judgement, I hear the new butt ugly camaro looks better in person...

I'm on the wrong coast...that was a really cool offer though!

Ernie, that link I posted should have some good info about turbonique and it's history. Basically the short version goes like this: these guys had a bunch of a certain chemical laying around back in I believe the 1960's, and they proceeded to try and fabricate a demand for it by designing automotive power adders that used it. The axles were one, also they had self powered superchargers (think leaf blower supercharger, but a little sleaker than that). They had some demo cars, but if you look at that price sheet, and put in the context of the mid 60's, I can imagine why it never really caught on. Evidently the plans for how to make one are still out there, and this chemical is still available under it's correct chemical name instead of the flashy sales name they used to package it under, so the "technology" is not totally lost for all time.

S30 Aerodynamics not really that bad?
veritech-z replied to rudypoochris's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
I would bet the readily available 1" drop and a 15X8" wheel is more typical on a street car, but hey, he's doing the work, he gets to pick the settings! (same concept as if I'm driving, don't touch my radio!) I tried to ditch my mechanical fan, but the electric fan I chose was weak in the extreme, and ended up costing me a head gasket... -

That's pretty much what I was thinking, although it seems that the mechanical fan moves some SERIOUS cfm's when you rev the engine with the hood open... -

BJ, when you say your "typical" car has 17X10" wheels and is lowered 2.5", do you mean your typical race car, or the typical car any given member of the forum might be driving? (seems a bit more extreme than mine, anyway I wish my wheels were 17X10" with 0 offset...) -

In regards to what Russell has going on with his missing cowl seal, I'm guessing that most of the underhood air is exiting the car through the bottom of the engine bay as well. The path of least resistance for that air to take would definitely not be the (at most) 1/4" gap of the hood, but the gaping hole at the bottom, and the trans tunnel. If you've got that airdam close enough to the ground to matter, shouldn't there be a low pressure zone forming behind it that would pull the underhood air down there anyway? I'd be curious to know what the radiator does to the speed of the air passing through it, and in turn how that affects the pressure of the underhood air. -
By the way, what ever happened to this car? I thought you were supposed to investigate getting me that fascia...you know, Christmas IS coming up...

Phantom, a drive that short technically qualifies as what the owners manual would call "extreme conditions" because the car gets a lot of startup wear and tear, but no real time to get up to operating temperature...plus, snow is COLD! I'm in florida, here the low is like 56 degrees or something...

I was thinking it was either that your old probe wasn't getting a good reading, or it was possibly hotter in the new location, right by the restriction to exhaust flow than it would be upstream a little bit...What is the usual solution to the blowthrough problem you are describing? Changing the cam to one with less overlap? Are you stuck just reducing the boost pressure at that point?
-
You mean that one you just made up? I'm telling you, just go get a turbonique rear axle, and ditch your engine all together! For those who don't know, these axles were turbine driven, they had a turbine that would burn a specific type of fuel, which in turn spun the wheels, so unlike a jet car, they actually used the wheels to power down the track. these horsepower ratings are what the differential would PRODUCE, not what they would handle... http://www.the-rocketman.com/turbonique.html here's one in a beetle:

That's it...let's all go out and buy matching Panteras!

Awesome job, Tim! Overall, are you happy with that Tec system? I've always wanted one of those, but it was always out of my price range (and possibly my installation skill level...) In an attempt to help solve your tuning problems, allow me to ask: would less backpressure really make for higher manifold temps? I would expect the reverse, but that's just my gut feeling. Is it plausible that your new probe location closer to the turbo would be reading higher numbers than it was? I read in your first post there was some confusion about the BHJ damper marking time correctly, then you saying that you were surprised at how much timing you were able to run. Are you sure you've got it right after all? I'm just trying to be helpful, not mr nitpicky guy, sometimes it helps me to hear stuff from somebody else when I'm stuck...
