  1. Sunbelt Rentals (if they have one in Napa) has engine hoists you can rent, either towable or ones that disassemble. They cost $28 per day. I would SERIOUSLY look at buying a hoist on Craigslist though. I bought a 2-ton Harbor Freight hoist that was used just ONCE for $50. You have to remember that your friend's hoist will help you load and unload the engine this time. However, you still have to PULL your old engine out of the Z (hoist) and then put the new engine IN your Z (hoist). Look for a deal on CL and save yourself the headache as well as money.
  2. I've been doing a bit of reading on Hybridz as well as Google and have not quite found the answer I am looking for. All else remaining the same, what gains have those who have switched/ported (not just port matched) intakes seen? I know though conversations with Ron Tyler that the stock intake runners are only 55% of the intake valve open area. Increasing the runner diameter would certainly help with the VE of the intake. I am trying to determine the cost-to-benefit ratio of modifying my intake/purchasing a Lone Wolf intake manifold. I will be running up to 20 psi once I get my meth injection system installed. Presently I am running 15 psi with a T03/04E 50 trim turbo.
  3. Evan offered a great suggestion. Rent a truck from U-haul or Home Depot, etc. and put the engine in the back. Ask the gentleman you are buying the engine from if he let you borrow the hoist or you could ask him to come along and throw $20+ his way for his troubles.
  4. I am glad I read the whole thread first before posting my comment. I was wondering what the modeling assumptions were when I saw the runners appearing to dump to atmosphere/environemental. I will caveat my comment by saying that I do not know intake design. However, I am very familiar with fluid flow systems. Right now, as modeled, it appeaers as though the runners are the only restrictions in the system. However, if the intake valves/ports on the head flow less than the runners, you will develop backpressure or your flow velocity will decreased, etc. The modeling is great for helping to visualize the airflow in the intake, but I would caution using the raw data. Would it be possible to model a restriction at the runner outlet that would simulate the valve? Beyond the valve would be environmental.
  5. Go to www.carfiche.com and download the FSM for a 1982 280zx. It will have the wiring diagram you seek.
  6. This is NOTHING jon. Check out his thread titled Turbo Boost in Misc. Tech.
  7. John travels out of the country frequently. When he is in town he does reply prompty.
  8. Austin, I loved the S4. I had an AMS chip (310/300) with Intrax coil overs and sway bars. It was a true sleeper and was a blast to drive. However, it was a maintenance NIGHTMARE. It was in the shop 24 days in a 6 month period. I would have LOVE to have held onto the car longer, but owning that thing out of warranty would have been a fool's gamble.
  9. I owned a 2003 350z in Le Mans Sunset. I sold it for a 2002 Audi S4 when my wife was expecting. I loved the Z.
  10. I just had another thought that I may be slightly too rich over 11 psi. I have 4 to 5 logs that show my AFR is around 10.5 between 11 and 15 psi. I will also try to lean it out slightly (11ish) which will enable me to open the plugs back up to 0.03 which should help my idle. The plugs themselves look fine. The electrode is not covered in soot and neither is the ceramic tip. I may go back to 6s though. I'll keep this post updated.
  11. Update: Just re-gapped the plugs to slightly smaller than 0.025 and upped the dwell to 6 ms (from 5 ms) on the coils. It seems to have done the trick and I only misfired once. However, my idle suffered a little bit as you can hear the occassional miss. Hugh: I was running the 6s which is fine for stock, but when you run more boost you should really consider going with a colder plug to prevent pre-ignition. More boost means hotter temperatures. The gap must be adjusted from the stock 0.044 for NGKs down to around 0.03 or so to prevent spark blowout. Quite a few posts here on Hybrid talk about the issue.
  12. The misfire occurs in 2nd and 3rd gear at boost pressures exceeding 10 psi. The car stumbles badly, a bit of popping in the exhaust, and I can't get it to work through the range. I do not experience this in 4th and 5th gear and I am able to hit 15 psi without a problem. I've already gapped my plugs (NGK BPRES7) to 0.03 in. with no luck. My spark plug wires at Magnecor's and I am using LS-1 coil on plugs. The coils are set at 5 ms dwell time. The car never did this before when I was running hotter plugs (6s) before my last HG failure. Does anyone have any idea why I would misfire in 2nd and 3rd but not 4th and 5th?
  13. As I said, I've had no problem with fumes running Earl's lines in my car, which is parked in my garage attached to my house.
  14. I used Earl's. I would recommend either Earl's or Goodridge.
  15. Pop, I read the same thing on here about the braided lines and I am wholly convinced that it is more of the quality of the line than the lines themselves. I am running braided SS lines from my fuel tank to the engine and I do not have an odor problem.
  16. The car has been sitting outside, over grass. I would definitely be worried about floor pan and frame rail rust. Remember when you pull up the carpeting to check out the top of the rail, there is usually a factory sound deadener (on 240z's it is a tar mat) that is painted. Edit: I just read the last comment about the lost title. Things tend to work themselves out.
  17. I run one system (Wolf versus Innovate) at a time. The beautiful thing about Innovate is that it will actually calculate your injector pulse width given a target AFR based on your fuel map. I then input the new fuel map into Wolf and retune. Innovate is usually close after one time, very close after two to three. If you get the LC-1 and LMA3, they will log RPM, manifold pressure and O2 (the LMA3 also has accelerometers like G-tech), you are set. I'll take a screen shot of the Wolf data logging screen and one of the Innovate Logworks for comparison.
  18. Window Channel Felt (from Classiczcars.com) "www.jcwhitney.com The catalog item number for the part is 18GA-4874U. Now here s the tricky part. The letters in the catalog number can be different depending on which issues of the JC Whitney catalog your looking at. But if you call the order line and tell the person you want part # 18-4874, you ll get the right stuff. It s description is "Rubber Window Channel 9/16 " x 17/32 ". It comes in an 8-ft. piece. Which is almost enough to do both sides, but not quite. So, you have to order 2 pieces. The price when I ordered was $6.99 each. "
  19. Not yet. They stated that they were going to start shipping units in early December, but I have not received the new unit yet. Do yourself a favor and forget using Wolf's wideband capability and go with Innovate. Wolf's data logging is archaeic in comparison.
  20. I do have the part numbers, but I am in San Diego at the moment. I'll post them later tonight when I get home.
  21. My engine hoist has swivel casters at all points. I can't tell you how invaluable that has been when pulling/dropping engines. I've been thinkign about converting my engine stand to casters as well.

    Which carpet???

I have a 240z and bought MSA's sectional carpet kit. I assume that their full carpet kit is manufactured by the same company, so I'll comment on my experience. The MSA sectional carpet kit, as delivered, is ok. The pieces fit well, but it has a "cheap" feel due to the very thin padding. I removed the padding and applied some 6 lb/sf carpet padding to the carpet pieces. This dramatically improved the look and feel of the kit. The carpet is wearing well so far.
  23. Ace Hardware has felt weatherstripping that is a perfect replacement for the door panel window felt. You can buy one roll for $8 if I remember correctly. Mcmastercarr.com has the top window channel weatherstripping in 8 foot lengths for $11 each. You need two of them to complete both doors. You can "rent" tools for free from Autozone. You simply put down a deposit that you get back when you return the tool. It's great for renting speciality tools that you will only use once or twice. Still hung over and that is all that is coming to my pickled brain right now.
  24. You learn something new every day. I did not know about the metric Class rating. Thank you.
