  4. Also agree, the turbo will reduce the initial pressure wave of each pulse as it hits the blades, quieting it as well as making each pulse less distinct. A turbo car should sound a bit quieter and more mild, given the exact same motor and exact same exhaust apart from the terbeaux.
  5. Mercedes Benz M104.99x But seriously, it's all about how you want the power applied. Both can easily reach 300whp, both can even hit 300hp NA (ok well kinda). The power applicaion of the VQ at 300hp is going to be decidedly more linear while the old' L is going to be much more "exponential" as the turbo spools. However, all that money you spend scouring for VQ parts and all the stuff you need to stuff it in there, you could be spending on making the L28 more powerful. My vote is the L28, they just sound good
  6. Heh, if it was a Mercedes Special Tool, it wouldn't be carried in hand, it would be placed in a highly guarded padded vault with temperature and humidity control as it MOST LIKELY cost more than the house it calls home. That's my father with his favorite ball-joint extraction tool.
  7. No. The Mercedes Benz 280 Rods. They're 150mm (5.906in) long and a Honda K24 90mm overbore pistons with a compression height of 1.14in. I may still stroke it, it all depends on the cost of each motor.
  8. I've used ACT clutches and they hold up great. But at 300hp, how long that old 4 speed will survive as a semi DD/track car may be another story entirely.

  11. [Rant] Again I apologize for my generation. I've heard people call us Gen Y, the Information Generation, etc. etc. Really we should be called the entitlement generation. For some reason, far from me, an odd thing happened to children born past about 1985 (for what it's worth, I'm in the middle of 89) that they grew up believing that they're entitled to many of the things that all of you guys had to work for. John C: I feel that everyone goes through a stage in their life where they have bad tastes in cars, if I haven't gone through it already I'm sure I will. However, I bet you worked for your stuff, your knowledge, and your outstanding skill in fabrication and suspension setups. It's not like someone just went to you and was like, oh hello, let me give you all this stuff. You didn't just come here and people instantly respected your word (well, you are JohnC So... WWJCD?) but you worked for you knowledge, skill and respect. Apparently we as a group cannot. It just hurts too much... I go to a college where about once a semester, someone writes in the school newspaper that all the professors need to stop being mean and realize that every student deserves at least a B. What in the hell makes you believe that you deserve a B just for showing up? I'm sure in real life when you have to eek out your own living your boss will be like, Oh I know you're a complete retard, but lets be honest, you deserve at least 50k just for showing up to work and acting like a vegetable. The kind of work ethic that has infected today's kids is disgusting. If they don't get it, that's alright, someone will do it for them and that's what they deserve. Even though my father was an excellent help to me when learning how to work my way around a set of wheels, he by no means held my hand. When I was looking for a "classic" car for when I turned 16, my dad opened the garage door and said, "The old mini shell is out there, so is the tool box. I'll help you figure out how to do something bit you've got to do it yourself. Go have fun". I cant wait until we get into the real world and they figure out there are no free lunches. When the current group of half way intelligent adults finally buys the farm there are no more 'gimmie's'. I understand that there are many exceptions to this rule, Mat (flatblack) and ??? (skib) both show that it is possible for there to be hope for this current crop of semi-youth. I know there are others around here I just don't commonly have the ages off the top of my head. But I feel that by the group as a whole, we just expect the world to sort things out for us and life will be perfect when we get there. ....about that. [/rant]
  12. Yes, it's equally overbuilt, also equally forged, induction hardened at the journals and micro polished. I believe it's about an 84mm stroke. So about 8mm less. Edit: With the 320 crank, the 280 rods, and 90mm K24 pistons, I will have a calculated CR of 8.8:1 (give or take .2), a 1.78 Rod/stroke ratio, and 3206cc's of displacement. I could spin the motor 8928rpms without hitting the 25m/s mean piston speed. May just stash the crank away for a heavier car that needs some stroke to motivate it
  13. I feel my Z gets away with a bunch less than the ol' pony cars. And now that in Indiana the fuzz has mustangs it's just not cool.
  14. People always hate on the QR. If they did some thinkin' took some of that absurd amount of stroke out with a fully counterweighted crank they'd have one hell of a screamer. Those heads are pretty little things.
  15. Thinkin' about it. Also considering going back to a 3.2 crank since I'm looking for a bit more capacity for RPM's... We'll see.
  16. That's intense, I've done a few long distance runs in the Z with no problems like that. The side of the tranny tunnel gets a little warm to the touch but definately nothing about 100-105 degrees. Maybe you can add a little wrap to the area of the exhaust that comes close to the footwell?

  18. Update: First snag. Got the crank in and found a 280CE rod and piston for fit. This crank is massive : I stuffed the 280CE rod/piston in the bore, and rotated it through. Surprisingly nothing hit. It did however stick up a little bit... Apparently this is a 3/4'' stroke over the 280 motor. Fixing this may be an issue...that's .385 sticking proudly out of the top of the block

  23. I'm just going to go ahead and play devil's advocate here. Have you thought about mean piston speed? More importantly, piston acceleration? This will kill a little wind-up motor way before it runs out of weeze in the top end. Also what about rod/stroke ratio? The little hawn-der engines have pulled of just north of 10k with a not perfect rod/stroke ratio, but they don't exactly last greats amount of time at that range. The only motorcycle mfg that used a 5 valve arrangement was Yamaha and IIRC they switched back to a 4 valve motor in 06 because they realized they didn't need it as 4 valves flow plenty, once again, keeping the bottom end in it is way more difficult at this point. You want to make a motor that LOVES revs? Ditch the pistons. Get a 13B rotary, put a bridge port or peripheral port on it with some lightened rotors and hardened stationary gears a decent set (PTS, etc) of apex seals and go wind it up like a sorority girl at homecoming.
