  1. Car parts on the kitchen counter... almost as bad as rebuilding my engine in my apartment living room. Good stuff James, keep the pictures rolling!
  2. If money is no object, Motec all the way. I'm not sure if they've changed much in the last 5 years, but the one I played with didn't really seem terribly more difficult than the electromotive, PE or SDS at least in theory. There was just a lot more parameters. Bang for the buck, probably Megasquirt if you want to assemble it all, if not I am still quite partial to my SDS and like it a lot.
  3. So far I have only heard from 3 people out of all that said they are in. If you haven't contacted me via email (rich AT 2gr DOT ca) and are interested in saving up to 20% off an SDS purchase, please do so asap as the order will be finalized on Tuesday the 17th.
  4. The SDS installation manual itself is really straight forwards, plus there are forums and a great technical website out there for SDS info. In my opinion, there isn't anything specific about the L28 install except as Scottie says the Hall sensor. Fabricating a bracket for that is quite simple. As far as I can see the only con to the SDS over stock is the cost. The pro's are well, everything else! Newer technology, adjustability, control, reliability, better economy, more power, you name it! I'm personally quite pleased with my sds and wouldn't change much. I'd have spend the extra few hundred to get the coil packs just for aesthethics, and I would have probably purchased the fast idle option as I drive my car into the cold weather a bit and it would be nice. Pretty minor though. http://www.sdsefi.com has a lot of info and it's worth looking at their projects/tech articles and seeing what the system can do.
  5. Forgive my ignorance, but why can't you run a duct that works on the track and street? Is it really that tough to come up with a system that works well and stays together?
  6. Yup sounds like an early 74. Congrats! People think of the 260z as the ugly duckling onf the Z family, but if you ask me with a few minor changes it can be awesome. I like the center console and dash better than the early cars, plus you have the good looks of the small bumpers as well. Lets see, tips... well the stock 260z carbs are crappy. (the have flat tops instead of rounder tops) The early carbs are a good upgrade. (70-72) Brakes should be able to be rock solid when in good condition. One good bit is that the pedal height itself is adjustable, so after bleeding and so on, if your pedal isn't where you want it you can move it. An electronic ignition swap is quite a nice upgrade as well. You can get everything you need out of a later 280z or 280zx. Or you can jump in to the hybridz swing and skip those little upgrades alltogether and put a big motor in there. Either way you win because these cars are easy to work on and great to drive.
  7. The first ZX I owned had rear disks that were less than 0.040" thick when I got the car...
  8. I can attest to some good footage here.
  9. Racesimcentral.com is the place to go for GPL stuff... that is not Racismcentral.com by the way.
  10. Yes I remember steering moss too, or what is more commonly called steering wheel moss. When leaving your Z sitting outside for longer than a 6 month period of time, the moss starts to cover everything. If you use a solution of vinegar, along with liberal application....
  11. ...but not how to spell his name?
  12. I played it religiously for about 2 years. It was made in what, 1998, and is still to my eyes the best racing sim as far as realism goes, ever. The graphics have had some serious updates through the years, and the whole game is open source now, which means there are lots of upgrades. I must say that this is the creme de la creme of racing sim's! Highly recommended to any car buff but especially someone that wants to know why everyone died in the 60's in F1. Seriously, you think a V8 Z is a handful, try a 1200lb car with 400hp, drum brakes on all 4 corners, with tall, narrow, crappy rubber!
  13. Has anyone actually used one in their Z and can give us an indepth review? I'm curious to know how it is in the corners, seems that since it's a locker type and would be better suited to straight line accel, though it sounds like you can tune your breakaway torque slightly using springs.
  14. 1100lbs/in is a fairly stiff setup in the back of a 510... I believe it gives a wheel rate ~275lb/in range with the semi trailing arm setup. Wheel rate is just a ratio of the distance from pivot to spring, and pivot to wheel so it's not too hard to figure out from there... Then you can basically apply the 300 posts here about choosing springs to you car, just use the early Z spring rate and compare it to your wheel rate. (in the early Z, the wheel rate and spring rate are essentially the same, while the 510 and ZX they are vastly different) Once you figure out what wheel rate you want, then use the ratio to calculate your actual spring rate...
  15. Hmm, good power, quiet, mild mannered. Ross you are just begging for a turbo you know... Turbo SBC or something else...? Grand national?
  16. Informally yes.... For years I used to get together with a few friends and beat each other silly with bamboo sticks. (shinai) A few had some formal training at it, didn't seem to help them much though. We pretty much practiced the scottish school of swordfighting... Yell and scream and try to wack the other guy really hard. Seriously though, Kendo is pretty sweet. I do know a bit about it but haven't done it... why I don't know really. Congrats on First Dan.
  17. That's what they go for. The last time there was one in the computer in Canada it went for $500US... this was 3 years ago. It's impossible to find these up here. It doesn't surprise me that they sell for more now.
  18. Pete the problem with having no music is this: a lot of clips have a) no sound, or crappy sound quality. If you leave a section of video with no sound at all it seems really unfinished when surrounded with other clips with sound. Hence 1 reason for the music; it ties everything together. Also in order to achieve maximum effect the music should be tied with the video. However doing a copy without music is pretty simple, so that should be doable. I'd say this video will probably be done around the end of Feb. I am just working on it in my spare time. I will have to have the final clips I'll use in the next 2 weeks or so though, because after that it's just editing and it's rather counter-productive to be changing things very drastically. I like the video a year idea! BTW I really want to outdo myself, so if it takes longer it's because I'm not happy with it yet. I've done 3 or 4 half-good videos in the past, I want this one to be all the way good.
  19. I'd be willing to state that there are an obscene number of cars on this board that ANY purist wouldn't have touched due to rust. Drewz's V8 car being a good example, as was Pete's! Purists tend to want factory restorations, and in order to have a restoration job done you just don't start with a car that is 50% gone... But for some reason, the hybridz crowd will. I would bet that as a group we've probably saved over a thousand Z's that would otherwise rust to nothing, and put them on the road again!
  20. Or you can add the oil after the cartridge is in. I use just regular engine oil, or atf, something faily light (~10w oil).
  21. I can probably swing a race between the two, but it might be a few months. I'm going to but a G-TECH PRO soon so that might have to suffice.

240sx with limited slip (might be canadian only now that I think about it) have the 4.08:1 R230 as well.
