I've done alot of searching and still haven't found much answers... first I just ordered myself a miller 140 and it should be here sometime next week. now I'm kinda curious as to what I can get away with using that welder. I know that it can handle cage building but my big question is can it handle welding a front tube chassis? everyone that I've read that has done a front tube chassis uses chromoly and tig.. can it be done using normal structural tubing and mig tho? another thing.. what is the difference between erw and dom tubing ? I can't really find any info on these types of tubing or whatnot. would a harbor freight 6ton tub bender work for doing this type of job? or would you suggest something else? I'm trying to go the relativly cheap route mind you, and don't have a billion dollars to spend on super mega take over the world type equipment. If any of you guys could point me in the right direction on stuff to read up on I'd be gratefull. Besides the welding info my next big question is of course once I build a jig for the car to be put on and chopping the front off. Besides making a new front lower frame for the crossmember to attach to, what parts on the firewall are good to weld against for extra strenght ?

yea for that price plus having auto set for a first timer I felt it was a worth buy! now I just hope it gets sent off quickly.... my z is in need of new floors and frame rails.

http://www.brweldingsupplies.com/product_details.cfm?product_id=652 $675 and free shipping... does that look like a really good deal ? every place i've been seeing it, the 140 with auto set usually goes for 750-810... well with the cart included that is.

any pics for wiring the 280z wipers ? I've been able to get the low, high speed working but nothing on intermittent has anyone got that working yet ? -
so sanding is really out of the question then with this compressor. As for the die grinding.. yea I don't see myself doing more than 2 mins worth of grinding at once it would be way intermittent. The only reason for die grinding would be cleaning up my welds as I finish one part up at a time. this week i'm ordering my welder which I've decided to go with the miller matic 140 with auto set. I think it will be a good first welder for a learner no ?

Over the weekend I went to sears and put down 300 bucks on a 26 gallon 2hp 6.4cfm at 90psi craftsman compressor. I'm looking for some new tools to use in my garage for repairing my rusted 240z. However I'm getting lost really on the difference. the tools I'm looking for are 3in cut off and a angle die grinder and possibly a sander. I understand the cfm and that if I get a tool that is rated higher in cfm than my compressor it will have a recharge time, as it will use the tank then have to wait for the compressor to rebuild charge, where as I can get a tool with a cfm rated to my compressor and the compressor can just run the tool. but then i'm confused. whats the difference between a cutoff rated at 20,000 rpm at 4cfm and one rated at 20,000 rpm at 14cfm ? Does the higher cfm make it cut easier ? through thicker metals ? will a 4cfm fail me on what I need it to do ? Most of my repair will be cutting out rusted spots and welding in new patches and hopefully sanding the car down to the metal and doing some basic body work, nothing to extensive or to the point of doing it over long periods. It's the reason I put down 300 for that compressor. I didn't think that I'd be using it for 8+ hours a day more like 1-2 hours if anything. should I get the cheap 4-6cfm tools ? will they support me on what I need to do or was I stupid in thinking I could do patch work with this compressor ?

uhh guys, on3go shows as a banned member... i doubt he'll be posting back on this ? unless for some odd reason he's not really banned but who knows -
K so i'm diving into rewiring my 240z today with the It's a snap 21 kit. I was following the painless thread and i'm kinda stumped. step 3-5 are not clicking in my head. my harness has a red ign switch power which splits into 2 wires, purple starter wire, brown ign switch acc wire, dark pink ign switch ign wire, light pink ign switch coil wire. is 1 and 3 using the same switch power ? or is 3 using the pink ign switch ign wire ? why is black/yellow not used ? and what does it go to ? what is his orange wire ? is that the ign switch coil wire ? or just the ign switch ign wire ? I believe blueovalz had used this kit i think ? hopefully maybe he can chime in with some help ?

hmm.. the more and more i look at the kit i bought and the ez 21 kit... they look different... it seems I didn't get the ez wiring kit but got the "It's a snap" wiring kit. http://www.itsasnapwireandcable.com/new_page_6.htm comes with gm column connectors which I can assume I'll just take off and use the wires to wire my column correct ? or will this not work at all ?
-
well I ordered the 21 ez wiring kit off ebay!! we'll see how fun it is to unwire my z this weekend assuming no rain of course
-
Thanks guys, you've been a great help! hopefully by the end of this month i'll have a new wired up z
-
OH YEA!! I had one more question. Can I swap out the original connectors to weather proof ones ? you know the ones with the rubber seal ? If so do you know a place that sells them ?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Universal-21Circuit-wiring-harness-ITS-EZ-AND-PAINLESS_W0QQitemZ4605495077QQcategoryZ10076QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem that was the kit I was thinking about, for 130+ I thought it was a good deal. So your saying that with just that and of course the tools needed I could rewire the entire 240z ? aka no old crap left? besides the male/female connectors that is. next question is.. do you know if that EZ kit comes with all the grounds needed ? btw I do have a wirestripper, heatshrink tubing, and plenty of solder!! And yea I read the thread about the painless kit and saw your post. My concern wasn't installing it but would that be the only thing I need besides tools. I wasn't sure if our cars had random box's that I have no clue what they do hidden somewhere in my car. Yea i know it's old but there is always the mysterious box out of know where!! or that random extra screw.... or fuse...

Ok guys I could use some help, I'm starting to get tired of the wiring in my 240z as it's falling appart and simply not grounding good. I'd like to rewire the entire car but come short on what exactly do I need. I was thinking of getting the 21 circuit EZ kit but the question is, is that all I need ? would this replace everything ? if not what parts would it not replace. Obvisouly the ignition, coil, and distributor would not get replaced but anything else ? is there a computer box ? i'm assuming no but never know if something is hiding somewhere! Any help you guys can provide would rock

I saw this on ebay, and I've seen others that have created their own. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=42609&item=7982293992&rd=1 just thought I'd post this here for you guys to look at and discuss do they look well built ? worth the ammount for them ? any design flaws you can think of ?

Quiz: Why Not Equal Spring Rates?
CableSrv replied to johnc's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I'm posting here cause i'm having the same issue but never heard of this before... this is my first z and I redid my suspension with tokico hp shocks and 225lbs 8in springs all around. but now my back end floats going over bumps kinda like an old buick the other thing that got me is these 225lbs don't feel like 225lbs... I had 180lbs on my 2000 focus and those were stiff compared to the 225's on my z! the last thing that concerned me was when the car is lifted off it's wheels the shock extends so far that the springs are no longer tight and fall down unsprung!! is this natural with 8in springs ? should i worry that at full extend my springs aren't even holding any pressure? this is with it lowered 2in from tire to fender.
