What a difference the right size carb can make
jt1 replied to deja's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I've been called a lot of things, but this is a first for "snob". If you have a math degree, physics degree, or spelling degree, you hide it well. You're saying all developments in fuel delivery since the 60's have been kept secret? Sir, for you: John -
What a difference the right size carb can make

Zfury, you need to understand physics better, specifically Bernoulli's Law. With two carbs of different cfm ratings on the same motor, with both of sufficent cfm to minimize manifold vacumn, the difference is the velocity thru the carb. That's why you can have two different cfm carbs on the same motor, they can both run well and produce close to the same power. Grumpy is one of the most knowledgeable people on this board. When you start telling him he's wrong, you better get your facts together. Perhaps you should consider changing your sig line from "I'M BAD" to something else. John -
Bob, it looks great! A long time in paint jail, but it looks like it was well worth the wait. John

About the only other advice I can offer is to carefully check thru the ignition and timing. Pickup, coil, cap & rotor, wires, grounds. Make sure the engine is grounded to the frame somehow. Maybe then borrow a carb from somebody and see if that helps isolate the problem. John
-
Two possible causes: Vacumn leak. Make sure all ports, openings, etc on the carb and manifold are plugged. Then use a can of starting fluid or carb cleaner to spray around the manifold with the motor running. If the idle picks up you have found the leak, correct it. Valves not properly adjusted, maybe holding some valves slightly open. John

Joe, if you want to go with a factory head, I've got a set of 186's that came off an old circle track motor I used to run. They're in barn condition, would need a valve job and springs at least. They have a moderate port job, guideplates and studs. pm if interested. John

Did I make everyone angry... or am I just stoopid???
jt1 replied to a topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
You're a fairly new member here. When you've seen "How much does it cost to put a 350 in a Z?" and "What are the biggest tires I can put on my Z?" or "When I put my turbo'd blown NOS'd 500 inch LS in my Z will I need to reinforce the frame?" a few hunded times each, you will understand repetitive searchless questions that waste Dan's bandwidth. Mike, I'm not an ignition expert, but look into the top MSD digital units. I think they offer the features you desire. John -
I don't have any stories yet....there may be some after the event! This is gonna be a shakedown cruise for me. First time in a different car, first time with a turbo, street tires (some kind of falkens????), unknown chassis setup/characteristics, all point to a conservative weekend for me. I'm really looking forward to seeing Red Bird. John

Tom, sorry you're having problems, unfortunately I don't have a clue how to help. Are you still planning to come to the T1 event this month? John

Lots of possibilities. Some things to check: Mag pickup in distibutor. Bad coil. Check grounds/connections on ignition Inadequate fuel supply-low pressure-stopped up filter Secondaries not opening correctly Going lean when secondaries open- step up springs/rods How much initial/total timing? Are you using the vac advance? John

How much vacumn are you making? John -
airzona z car big piston struts?

What's the lower red ring for? Do they use 2.5" springs? John -
Just think how much better it will be with a good header. A cam would make a world of difference too. Probably need to upgrade valve springs for the new cam. While the head is off, a little port job, and deck it down for some more compression. Bigger injectors and a reflash will then really make a difference. Probably need to upgrade the intake now. There are some really cool turbo systems for Z3's. And the sickness continues............ jt

PICS! Break In Oil Analysis. What is Normal? HELP!
jt1 replied to v80z's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Joe, I wouldn't drive it much with the valves that loose. Lots of stuff bouncing around there, not much good can come of it. BTW, machine shop called and said my block is ready, so I can start getting it put back together. John -
Good deal, glad you found the problem and fixed it before it got bad. jt

Looks like a nice place Mike, complete with cool cars. BTW, Chimney Rock is for sale. jt

Having a very hard time finding my brake problem
jt1 replied to Forrest's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I've got the 15/16 ZX MC, a 74 booster, 1.75 Wilwood Superlites up front, 1.75 Dynalites in back, and a Wilwood prop valve. I used to have 1.375 superlites up front, and had a high firm pedal, but too much rear brake even with the prop valve at maximum reduction. I changed to the 1.75 supers, and now have a lot more brake, ie the car stops a lot quicker, but I now have a long pedal that's not as firm as it was with the smaller piston calipers. This leads me to believe the 15/16 master isn't moving enough fluid for the 1.75 calipers to give a good firm pedal, although the overall braking performance is a lot better. John edit: needs a proofreader -
Thanks Mark. We'll see if she wants to track it. She did an event in my car back in 03 I think, doing quite well but hasn't been back. She drives like a maniac all the time anyway. John, thanks also. No danger of me selling the white V8Z, it's too good a time. I've got a 71 vintage Z, one of the factory sponsored resto specials, that I'm going to sell. It's perfect, and a collector needs it, not me. I want to see how long a black mark it will leave on the road, probably not very long. jt

Interesting trip. Got back Fri evening about 11pm, tired and ready for bed, 1492 miles in the rear view. The car's good and so-so. Paint job is a 20 footer, sandblasted in front with some chips, and a few peeling spots in the clear coat. It looked silver in the pics, but is actually a silver with a brownish/greenish tint depending on the light. LF fender has been replaced at some point, but I couldn't find any damage to the chassis. Car is straight, and has no rust or frame damage at all. I crawled around under it for over an hour. Interior is pretty good except for some dash cracks and soso seat covers. The car was imported into CA, spent a number of years in AZ before coming to Florida. It has a big file of reciepts for work that's been done. Hot sounding wife is actually totally HOT. Turns out this is her car, she does DE events and a few club races, and drives it around on pretty days. She's got a new 996 twin turbo in the garage. Husband is a banker who thinks cars are just to get where you're going. Mechanically I was impressed. Engine, trans, and clutch were freshened last year, upgraded turbo and cams. Suspension has poly bushings, bilstein shocks, upgraded torsion bars, adjustable sway bars, and cooling ducts for the brakes. It drives great and has decent power. Not power like a V8Z, but decent. 12" straight pipe on the turbo is a little loud but not bad. We stuck a tag on it and drove it around a little this afternoon. Gail loves it and says she wants to do some DE events in it. This may get interesting! John

Well I'm hooked up and ready to go. I called the guy to see if we were still on, and got his hot-sounding wife instead. She said her husband was out in the yard talking to somebody about the car. I said "What's he look like?" She replied "Tall and good looking. He must work for some hybrid car company cause that's whats on his shirt." %#@&*&%$#@!!!!!! jt

Mike, I've always thought the slantnoses were the prettiest 911's, and I like this color. I just hope when I get there I like it. It's not a concours car, and I don't want one. I want a fun weekend driver/occasional track day car. My vintage Z hasn't brought me pleasure. I've put about 1K miles on it, and every time I drive it I am scared to death somethings going to happen to it, so I'm going to sell it. Congrats on the Z3. I've never ridden in one, but I have a couple of the M coupes. They are well mannered and quite quick. Oh, go ahead and get it. I'm researching some hacker programs for your security system in another window. jt
