  1. Header wrap absorbs moisture holding it against the hot headers. An absolute receipe for rust. Ceramic coat is like a high quality paint that keeps moisture and air away from the raw steel.
  2. You always have to wonder what the P38 could have been had they pulled the Allisons out and put in a pair of Merlins. Or better yet, Griffon engines.
  3. The drop in idle when braking could be a vacuum leak in the brake booster. Hook a vac pump and guage to it and do a leak down test.
  4. Not trying to be argumentative here, just trying to get accurate information, but do you know where that sort of stuff is written down? I have had people tell me things like this before. When I lived in CA and was trying to figure out how to drive to the pistol range in my Z (which has no trunk or even separate compartments for guns and ammo) I had an impossible time verifying exactly what the laws were. I even called half a dozen police stations and got half a dozen different answers. They were obviously making things up. But I figured if the cops don't know the rules then my only real hope was to do what makes sense.
  5. You guys must have bad juju with batteries. I have bought nothing but die hards for 30+ years and never once had a problem with them. I do replace them every 5 years cause I live in a cold weather state. I might get an optima for the Z simply because I hear they are suppose to be more tolerant of being run infrequently. Other than that it is hard to justify spending that much when I know a battery half the price will do everything I need it to. A $10 plastic tray under the battery will catch any leakage. Not sure though cause from what I can tell I have never had a battery leak.
  6. If I were you I would just quit looking at the exhaust.
  7. I would try this approach with them. Maybe tell them it inflames your hay fever. It might be they just need to keep one particular window closed. You could also go to a surplus store or home depot and get some filter cartridges for a gas/dust mask and give those to them. Ask them to exhale through those. They trap 100% of the smoke. We had such a problem with the pot heads on the ship taking those off the gas masks that I use to leave extra ones in the damage control lockers. If none of that works then apartment manager it is.
  8. You route the PCV through a catch can and into the intake. The catch can is just an oil separator. Here is a popular version from LS1tech.com. It has an internal filter to catch the oil mist http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=589855&page=1&pp=20 And here is the $40 Arkansas special http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=563211
  9. I have had no problems to speak of with my DGV carbs. Worked for 15 years and were smog legal. The only reason I ent to DGV's is the SU throttle shafts leaked. Rebuilding SU's with worn throttle shafts (i.e. any original carb) cost as much as the Weber conversion, hence the swap. I am not sure why people think the DGV's are crappy. They do make the car easier to start in cold weather. The only issue I had with them is prolonged idling with a cold engine will cause fuel to puddle in the intakes. This causes some stubbling and black soot the next time the throttles are blipped. But this seems minor to me. Having said all that if I had it to do over I would have paid the $600 (in 1992) and rebuilt the SU's. Just like the looks of them better. If you have SU's rebuilt MAKE SURE THEY REBUILD THE THROTTLE SHAFTS. Z Therapy installs some type of external seals. IMO might as well get them straight from the source.
  10. When it comes to safety I figure it is much more safe than a motorcycle or scooter. I'm a little surprised. I would have thought someone would have brought up the word Humvee by now. This site lists the 3 models they intend to market in the US. $12K to $17K. Seems like a lot for a diesel powered golf cart. One line says the length of the car is about the same as the width of a full sized pickup My work commute is only 10 miles through suburban roads. An occasional freeway jaunt to get from one place to another. There is always the family minivan or Z if I want to go somewhere farther or faster. I am a little worried about reliability with all the electronics. 4 air bars, computer controlled everything. They say it doesn't allow the driver to turn off the stability control or ABS, so doing donuts in the snow would require some manual reprogamming. Maybe I can get the state to give me tax credits to build my own bio diesel distillery in my back yard. I don’t think I would go through a tank of fuel a month (8 gallons). I could become energy self sufficient. I wonder if they have a lawn mower attachments for that thing….. Plus, that car would be a chick magnet.
  11. Bad Dog Parts is in Bedford MA. Not a huge day trip depending upon where in New York you are. http://www.baddogparts.com/index.htm
  12. You don't need 4wd to tow. It can be nice on wet boat ramps, but is not absolutely necessary. Check the tow rating on your truck and compare it to the other vehicles mentioned above. The 4.3L S10's don't do too badly. Especially if it has an auto trans.
  13. Anybody here own a SMART car? Suppose to be coming to the states next year. A little pricey but at 79 mpg it might work as a commuter car. I have already thought about the safety thing. What I am wondering about is what are they like to drive in the real world? Specifically, what they are like for someone 6' 250 pounds, how are they in snow and what kind of reliability/maintenance headaches are they? I have read the defrosters suck but haven't read anything about the AC. At 0-60 in 22 seconds I figure it won't be a free way car (at least not without a LONG entrance ramp).
  14. I'm not sure I want to get into this one but there is a difference between taillights and brake lights. Take it to a shop and tell them to fix it.
  15. They have one on display at the Air Force museum. Along with a dozen other airplanes on display UNDERNEATH the B36. They have a display of the weapon it carried and one of the parasite fighters (the Goblin?) they tried to carry underneath the B36.
  16. Get an industrial sized can of pepper spray and carry that with you. They make stuff specificly for bears. Those guys are just big ass dogs, so treat them like you would a dog you don't know and you are usually OK.
  17. Yes, it could be those things. It could also be a few dozen other things. Like electrical faults, failing ignition module, vacuum leaks, fouled plugs, water getting somewhere it shouldn't.
  18. Yeah, if you had notice all those problems you might have been able to talk him down to a lower price Don't feel bad. $500 isn't bad for a rust free shell. Shoot, it is worth $200 as scrap metal. The DMV thing sucks though.
  19. Why do I have the theme song from Sanford and Son going through my head? Clean looking vehicles.
  20. If you go to the Air Force museum in Dayton Ohio they have one in a hanger that you can actually touch. No one was watching so I damn near crawled up into the engines. My all time favorite is the P47 Thunderbolt. Oversized, ugly, doesn’t look like it should fly well, but with so much horsepower it is a world beater. The ME-109 is a very close second. That thing looks mean sitting on the ground. And the Daimler Benz 601 engine is probably ones of the best aircraft motors of WWII. Why have a carbureted Merlin when the DB is fuel injected? Jets are too antiseptic looking for my tastes. They are so aerodynamic that they all start looking the same after awhile. But if I had to pick a jet it would probably be a MIG 15-17. Those things are tiny little hot rods with big ass guns. They look like someone hammered them together in their garage out of scrap metal. Sort of like my Z. Something about those Russian planes you gotta love. BTW, if you go to Dayton to see the AF museum, plan on spending at LEAST 2 days there. Far and away one of the best air museum in the world. They have planes no one else has. You can see a stealth fighter there.
  21. Yeah. That is where I read it. Guess it would thicken the oil and cushion the backlash noise. Sort of like a 100 wt oil. I would like to see the one about the battery on concrete. I always thought the temperature and moisture would make them age quicker. All I know for sure is a battery not hooked up to a car that is not run from time to time doesn't live long at all.
  22. Too bad you didn't save enough on the cover to afford a little air for those tires...
