what is the status of the AEM engine management system?
Lockjaw replied to Bob_H's topic in Fuel Delivery
Unless you are putting it on a Honda, I think you should be prepared to wait. Do they have plans to offer one for a Z? -
help w/ a 240 carb,manifold,linkage swap on a 260 engine
Lockjaw replied to a topic in Fuel Delivery
I will tell you what helps to get one started. The adusting knob on the bottom of the carbs that asjustes the level of the orifice should be 2.5 turns from all the way up. In other words, turn the things in all the way, and then open them 2.5 turns. You need a choke to start Su's. I am using two pieces of solid core wire right now since I have my car all in peices. Also make sure you plugs aren't fouled out. I had a hard time starting mine the other day after I put the a head on it, and the plugs were wet. Cleaned em and it fired right off. Good luck. -
Housing or wheel? For a housing, the .63 one is nice, the .82 is better for top end power. For a wheel, the stage III T3 wheel is good and will easily supply the HP you want.

Cool, I will Mic it this weekend and see what I come up with. I bet it is not milled enough.

I think when we were talking about them in an earlier post, someone said that they may not be making them anymore. Not sure if I read that right though. Are you calling or emailing? I had very little success with email and JCR.

Ya ediquette at the Drag Strip stinks these days. Usually when we go the ricers always go thru the waterbox, and then spread it all down the track. They also get all over the staging area's too. I just get up there, rev it up a little and hammer down, and if I run over someone's foot, to bad for them. It is pretty frustrating, and it is hard to control the masses. There are always fools doing burnouts in the line to stage, in the parking lot, etc. It gets old, but until the track officials start kicking people out for acting like idiots, I think we are stuck.

I would check the sender. You would have to really move some oil to suck the pan dry, and it is not something Datsun's are known for.
-
If you have access to both, I would get the 4.11. The ZX trans has plenty of overdrive, and the first gear ratio is taller than your 4 speed, so you need the extra gear in the back. I bet it perks up pretty good with the 4.11's/

It looks like you are set up like me. What you may have is what some friends have commonly referred to as mystery turbo death. Usually disconnecting the harness at the ECU and cleaning the plugs and ecu pins with brake clean and reconnecting will cure it. Another thing that helps is to make sure the fuel pump is grounded properly. Mine is grounded to the chasis. You may also need to check the BOV and maje sure it is working ok. I have the little HKS one, and had to shim the spring in it. You can get down into the 12's, it just takes some time and patience. The first pass I made in this car was a 14.1 at 101. That was after I spent a ton on building the motor and getting the JWT set-up in it. Ended up at 13.5 at 105. Then I added a 3 inch exhaust (best mod for the money on turbo engine in my opinion), and electric fan, and Jacobs plug wires and dropped down to 12.93 at 109. Added drag ta's and swapped to 3.90's in the back to get current best, on a sick turbo. Next round of mods will be a different turbo ( more turbine same size compressor), a slightly larger cam, and a ported exhaust housing. I want to upgrade to a bigger intercooler and 2.5 inch lines to, and hope all of that will help me drop a little more. I would upgrade your fuel pump. A walbro or peirburg from cartech would be a good way to go. I cannot remember what kinf of car you have, but if a 240, you will have to get a larger return line made and run if you add a larger pump.

Hey that looks sweet, makes me jealous. I should have one in a couple of weeks. I have seen a turbo like that, and you are right, there is not much left back there in the turbine. I hope to see you at Monkey town.

I run my BOV reference line from the manifold, it (bov)is connected to the line from the turbo to the intercooler, and it vents into a line that comes off the top if the valve cover and goes into the intake tube before the turbo. essentially tee'd in there. No issue's. If you are not running an intercooler and your set up is stock, you don't need a BOV, so why not take it off and see if that fixes your issue? Also you have to consider that a car with a flowmeter and you have a BOV, you have to plumb the vented air back into the system after the flowmeter. Here's why. The flow meter has already measured that air, and it is telling the ecu how to properly fuel the engine. When you vent it to the atmosphere, the ecu is fueling for the air in the system and the air you just vented out, and it makes your car run rich and stumble.

Hey, I have a sneaky suspicion my head is not milled what it is supposed to be, so I need a number. What is the thickness of the head so I can mic mine and find out if my suspicions are true? I have seen it, but can not remember where. Thanks

Oh and one small techincality. According to Maw, a police officer is supposed to "swear to" his tickets in 24 hours with the magistrate, at least where I live. If not, he is in violation of the law. Something you legal beagals can check on.

Yes that's it, ADMIT NOTHING. Want to hear a good one? I was taking a friend for a ride right after I put the JWT set-up in my car and demostrating its ability to boil the tires in 1st while I held my foot on the brake. Anyway, as soon as the tires start to really break loose, I hammer it and let go of the brake and shoot off down the road. I bark second, and keep going. While going up the road I am demonstrating the midrange punch I now have, and then slow down to turn to go onto the road that leads to my house. I check the review and way back there I see flashing blue and red lights. Oh **** I say. My buddy says What? I say cops, he says run, I say no might as well get it and let my mother in law deal with it. ( she is the magistrate) Anyway the cop gives me a reckless driving, and while I am signing the ticket he informs me I should be gratuitous since he could have written me up for attempting to elude. Well my friend says " excuse me officer, I don't mean to be a smart ass or anything, but this car is fast as hell and if we were tryting to get away, we would not be having a conversation right now". I was like, Thanks man. Maw took care of the ticket, and oh by the way, the cop lied, and she told him he was a liar, and said she would believe me over him any day. She even told him if I had been trying to get away he would have never caught me. HAHAHAHA.

Sorry but I would not lump that ugly car in with one with the beautiful lines of a Z car. That car falls into the category of if my dog looked like that car I would shave its ass and teach it to walk backwards.

They find out where it went, and then get it and bring it to you, or else you file a claim if they can't find it. At least they will look for it, try the USPS if you really want to have some fun.
-
I would yank those glass packs off since they don't flow as well as a straight thru muffler. You have already said they irritate you. Just stay away from a flowmaster and your car should be ok. Run a dynomax super turbo if you want it to be quieter, a straight thru muffler if you don't care about noise. If you really want to give your ears something to complain about put some flowmasters on it. They resonate something awful.

What you saw is likely some variant of the twin pop charger set-up JWT puts on the 300ZXTT's. You could check with them and see. In reality it should not be that hard to do. You wire up one, and you have to reset the fuel map to give out half the fuel it normally would since you have added another. Simple in theory, and pain in the ass in reality.
-
Do you have an 02 sensor in the system? If so, you can get a rough idea of where your fuel is by the voltage reading it is giving you. .47 volts is approximately stoich, and the higher the voltage, the richer the mixture. You should shoot for high.8's to low.9's and WOT. An egt would be nice, or a wideband even better. Although I am not an expert, I don't like the way you have the timing set for some reason. I agree with 20 degree's at base, and I guess I could find out from Clark what my highest timing is, but I would be shocked if it went as high as 40 degree's. That just seems way to high to me.

Yeah well you know, what can I say, I like to stir up stuff, and poke fun. Plus I never claimed I wasn't a smart alec.

Who has worked with the Mitsubisi TD06 turbo?
Lockjaw replied to KG78Z's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
Here's my .02 on Mitsu turbo's. First you need to make sure the thing would bolt up to your exhaust manifold. The other thing is that a garret turbo, which is what comes stock on the Zx is a better turbo. By better, I mean more robust, and there is more that can be done with the garret. Yes you can get things done to the mitsu, but generally the cost for a hybrid mitsu is higher than a hybrid garret, and the hybrid mitsu is going to be using the garret compressor wheel, so why not just get a garret? -
I am not sure O-ringing is necessary. I am using the stock nissan head gasket, I have flat top pistons and I have been running lots of boost with no problems. My block is decked though, and the head was given a clean up pass with the milling machine. But I would not tell someone not to get it done either.

Is the engine grounded properly? I would also double check that the harmonic balancer hasn't slipped. I had that problem on the engine in my 260. I would bring the number one cylinder up to TDC, verify the cam notch lines up with the gear, check the position of the distributor drive spindal, and look and see where the notch is in the dampner. It should line up with the 0. If any one of these is off, that is likely your problem. I can't think of anything else. You could be off just a tooth on cam timing, or on the distributor position. I have lined up my cam timing right before, only to have it off, so alot of the time, I will turn the engine over a couple of times and recheck it. Don't know why that happens.

I am not a lawyer, but all my friends say I should be one since I like to argue. I am glad some of the younger guys have admitted they are "sticks in the mud" with their driving antics. I personally love to spin tires, and I really leaving two really long black marks on the road, and then shifting into second, and leaving more. I still don't like cops, generally, and I am sorry, but I sometimes really like the idea of getting over on a cop. So all of you other people behave, and I am going to try to do the same.
