No it has electronic ignition, like the 280z.

Boozer I am on the Gadsden side of Bham, in between springville and trussville. My car is a 280zx right now, but the conversion is not to tough. I will likely end up with the turbo engine in a smaller Z car, but I am not set on keeping the 260 I have right now. So until I decide on that, it stays in the ZX. I also converted an NA Zx to turbo, and it was a piece of cake to do that one. I still have the little harness I fabbed up to connect the ZXT harness to the ZX hardness over by the battery. Oh and the P79 is on the 260 engine, but I have not gotten it to stay running long enough to tell very much about it, other than that the cam is pretty big. I actually think I could have gone with a thicker lash pad than I went with, but until I get a muffler on the car, I can't tell if the valvetrain is quiet or not. If it has decent compression, it should be pretty stout. I always liked the 260 engine too.

Toyota caliper swap clearence issues...
Lockjaw replied to ToplessZ's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I Put the 84 calipers on my 260, and I have some aftermaket slot mags on it, and they clear just fine. I had to trim about 1 inch of the dust shield on the top and bottom. The hardest part is bending the metal brake line without crimping it. I am using the stock rotor, but had room to go with something thicker, although I have not mic'd my rotor to see the thickness. My 260 has had sucky brakes since I got it, and I have replaced everything in the system, with the exceptions of the wheel cyliders, and I have kits for them, so that is next on the agenda. I put stainless lines, and a new MC, and it has a very firm pressure, but then it drops, and it is loosing fluid somewhere, but I don't see any puddles. -
What is up with your car? Is it a turbo? I have run 1.99 60 ft time with radials when the track was prepped really well, and before the ricers found it. Now with drag radials, I usually run run 1.8+ with sucky track prep. Or actually, water from the ricers running thru the water box and doing burnouts on street tires. I launch about 4k and just drop the clutch. The regular drag radial is a better choice then their new one. My friend ran mine the other day on his lowered 280z with no problems. I have no problems either in a 280zx using the turbo rims.

The rear is a screw in piston, I found that out the hard way after trying to compress it with a c clamp. I was cussing that one too. I had never seen a caliper so hard to compress before. On the front ones, and the back ones, you should get a manual because it will have pictures of what I am telling you, although Mike probably hit on it. There are two parts of the caliper. One that is bolted to the suspension assembly, and then the caliper is bolted to that. Basically there are two small 12mm bolts holding the caliper to this other part. Remove one bolt, and rotate the caliper back, and you can compress the piston. Then you can see how the pads are in there, and pull them out and replace. When you are done, rotate the caliper back and insert the bolt and tighten and you are done. Be sure to get some disc brake quiet spray and liberally coat the backs of the pads and allow it to get sticky before putting the pads in there. You could also get some KVR carbon fiber pads from Ross C. I put some in my wife's altima, and they are pretty tame under light pedal, but when you hit them, the car stops immediately. Ross is here. http://www.modern-motorsports.com/ He can get you those KVR's for probably less than the pads MSA is selling, and I bet these are better. He could tell you more.

Ok it fits. Here is the other issue I have. I am not a fan of any stock intercooler. They are basically designed to operate with a specific set of parameters, and generally, the highest performance is not one of them. I also don't think with a T3 that you need intercooer lines any larger than Alex said, which is 2.25 inches. What about this one? http://www.roadraceengineering.com/parts/icpics/18inchic-sameside.jpg It is 475, and will do everything you need with your setup. I would find a way to make my AC work. No way around that one. Unless you don't drive the vehicle much.

Hey guys, Nissan uses a ballast resistor on the ignition system of my 260. Can I just run the power wire to the coil directly and bypass this thing? I have a 300ZX coil I could put in its place if I needed to. It just seems to me like getting rid of the resistor would be a good idea.

OK, you can get a bonnet that goes on top of the carb from Turbonetics, and I am sure there are a couple other places out there with them. If you have a turbo manifold, then all you need to do is plumb it and jet the carb properly. I am not 100% sure about this, but I think you have to run fuel pressure equal to your boost plus what the carb is supposed to run. So if a holley likes 5 psi, and you were running 10 psi boost, you would need 15 psi of fuel pressure under boost. My best advice there would be to do your homework and find someone who has experience jetting carbs for turbo duty. I would think an egt or Air fuel ratio monitor would be a must here.

The internet is a good source for parts too, just depends what you are looking for. I like the headers from Motorsport, and sometimes they are the only place you can find a particular part, but 9 times out of 10, you can find it cheaper somewhere else. Here is the cheapest place I have found Nismo stuff http://nismoparts.safeshopper.com/35/cat35.htm?482 Really though, asking or what someone uses for a particular part and where they got it is usually a good way to come up with stuff cheaper.

For the racing ticket, you need to know what the other guy told the cops. If he spilled the beans, you are pretty much screwed. The thing is,when dealing with the police, is you have to balance between not saying anything, telling the truth, or telling a lie. My friends know that I will not tell or admit anything to the police if they pull me over. I will politely say that I think they are mistaken, or whatever, but admitting, no way. The best thing you guys can do is break down the officers story and try to show that she did not get your tag number, she lost site of you, etc. Was she close enough to make a positive identification? Is there another car like your brothers in your town? Your brother should not testify, IMO. He is lucky it is only a 10 point ticket, here it is a suspension for 60 days I think. And this is for Mike. Not all cops are bad, I am sure you were a nice one. However, I have run into more cops that were pricks than cops that were nice. The best way to stay out of trouble besides obeying the law is to drive a car that slides under their radar. My ZX does that. No one pays it any attention. I know they are out there doing their job, and alot of times it is thankless. But to many people can recite horror stories about some cop abusing his authority, and lieing in court to make a ticket stick. Complain to thier bosses, sometimes that helps.

Racing at the drag strip is the only way to decide who is the king. You also have to give a nod to the person with the larger engine. You are giving up almost a liter of displacement, which is alot. I want to see you make the L engine run some very good times, and the set-up you have it pretty trick, but Scottie has been running what he has been running for a while.

Well since you replaced the timing set, I would check the position of the distributor drive shaft that drives the oil pump. When the engine is a TDC, make sure the shaft is positioned according to a manual, or roughly just slightly left of straight up and down. Also, check the alignment of the timing marks on the dampner, and the camshaft. There should be the little v slot on the timing pulley, and the mark on the cam locating plate should be in the middle of the v notch. If all that lines up, then make sure your firing order is correct. 153624, and it is counter clockwise. One other thing to check is the air gap in the distributor. I know on ZX's, they have some little balls in there and sometimes the get loose and then there is all sorts of contact in there, and the engine doesn't care for that. If all of this is correct, your car should start no problem. Good luck.

I had a turbo that went south, and the smoking is part of that. IF you have some wheel contact with the housing(s)that would be your power loss since your boost would be lower due to the contact. You can check this by turning the turbo shaft with you fingers and listen for any noise at all. If you hear it, that is your problem. If the shaft has some play in it, that is another indicator.

Your 3.1 liter kit won't work with the 260 block, you will need to use a 280 block. If you built a 3.1 liter with fuel injection and a hybrid turbo, it would be a nice choice.
-
I can come up with 2 4 barrell manifolds if you need them.
-
Stock ZX injectors will not supply adequate fuel for the turbo application. Getting HP out of an NA engine is more difficult than a turbo. As the old saying goes, "speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?"
-
Perhaps the better question is, will that thing fit in the front of you Nissan?

No sense playing around with an oil burning pig. You can reuse the bearings as long as there is no copper showing, if there is copper showing, they have to be replaced as well. Good luck with it.

I don't like the idea of reusing rings, but it is your engine. It is not uncommon to see crosshatch on datsun cylinders after a lot of miles. Why not just get a set of sealed power economy rings for about 55 bucks, ( part number E-488k) and make sure the thing is sealed up right? Seems to me it is cheap insurance, and a lot less hassle then taking the engine back out for oil consumption problems. I would not hone it if you are reusing the rings, just put them back in CAREFULLY if that is the route you choose. I don't think scuffing the cylinder wall is a good idea if the rings have already seated, but that is me. I would get some new rings and hone it. Thats my 02.

Mustangs are a favorite prey of mine, but you have to be careful, a 10 second one looks like a 16 second one. He wouldn't have hooked up any better than you I bet. Datsuns motivate pretty good when they are spinning, unless you are sitting on the limiter. Just get some drag ta's or something, and have at it. Nothing like being able to stick it hard on the street. Way to lay it on him too. He probably new why he got beat, and must have been suffering from Porsche driver syndrome.

We had some fun with my car when my mechanic buddy was driving it after we put the 3 inch exhaust on it. These rednecks were working in this shop down the street from his, so we go down there and he says "check this out". He lets the clutch out at idle and stands on it, and as soon as it hits boost (20 or so psi), it is sideways thru first, he shifts to second and puts down some more rubber and when we come back, they go "where's the bottle?" . HAHAHAHAHA. Turbo's rock man. Turbo's rock.

That movie pissed me off if not for any other reason than the mispronunciation of NOS. Last time I checked it wasnt' NAUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe I should have added a W in there too. Well Mike I like your idea, except the last time I called the cops from my vehicle it was about the little escort vehicle that goes with the trucks pulling mobile homes, and how they cut people off and hog up the whole interstate. The cops were like, do you want to sign a warrant? I said, no what I want is for you to get out here and do your job. As you can imagine, that went over well. The second time I called, they asked me if the guy had an escort vehicle. I said yes. He says, as long as he has an escort vehicle he is ok. So I was like, so what you are saying is as long as I have an escort vehicle I can do whatever I want? And hung up. See they let crap like that go, but if I go down to the "nationals" here in town, they have a problem with that and make me leave. It obvious by looking at me I am not some young little wet behind the ears kid, but they don't care. That makes me a little ill, which is generally why I have nothing but utter contempt for most police officers. Yes I am sure there are good one's out there, but the selectiveness of what they do is BS. Besides, why should we be letting someone tow a 16 foot wide mobile home down the road during the morning commute? The thing is wider than the freakin' lane he is using. With my old 95 chev truck with a 305, I could not get past them in time to keep from getting stuck, but my 2000 Silverado 5.3 handles them nicely. Of course I usually bump the speed limiter when I pass them. I really like it when the little ricers tailgate my truck in an effort to get me to change lanes. I figure if they think 2500 pounds of honda is going to intimidate my 4600 pounds of truck, they got another thing coming. Have some fun with them and get in the left lane in front of them, and then don't move over for them.

I got money on Scottie. Best to stick with the tried and true and TESTED. When ya'll gonna go at it? In Montgomery on the 13th? I will have to make the scene for that one.

Man I would be getting excited too. First of all, your rod knock is likely due to the rod's big end being out of round, and it may or may not have spun a rod bearing. You would have had to have something major happen to bend a nissan rod. You should never re-use rings, new one's are less than 100 bucks, and trying to remove rings from one piston and moving to another is a bad idea. If you are worried about the cylinders, run down to a parts store and buy a hone (30 bucks), hone the thing out and put new rings and bearings in it and go. You should also use the P79 head on the 280 engine, but on the 260, you should use the N42 as previously stated. A properly tuned and mechanically sound inline six should not shake at all. If it has a larger camshaft in it, that will make it shake, but in your case, the shake is likely due to the rod knocking issue. Daw, so if the maxima head uses longer valves, seems to me I could take valves out of a Z n42 head and get larger seats installed in the maxima head. I am going to have to look into this because it would be a way to skip the huge amount of milling we are doing, and it gets rid of those cam tower shims. Plus, i could actually mill the maxima head and make some maor compression.

I am kind of liking this discussion because I was once pulled over and cited for something I did not do. According to the officer, I went thru a train crossing with the red light flashing. Of course I did not, but right over the tracks, I had to stop behind two other cars, and due to the officers position, and foliage, I don't think he could see me, or know if I was over the tracks. Anyway when he stopped me, he asked me if I had seen the train. I said once I had turned onto hwy whatever I had. He asked me if the lights were flashing, and I said no. He asked if I heard the horn, again I said no, and that I had the air on and my radio, and was on my way home from work and had no reason to be in a hurry. Well you guessed it. He wrote me a ticket. When he brought it back, I asked him a question. I wanted to know what his policy was on stopping cars when there was more than one that allegedly crossed the tracks with the red light flashing, you know, like how had he handled situations like that in the past. His response was "You need to sign that ticket" . I said, "what if I don't want to sign that ticket, I did not do what you say I did". He said, you REALLY need to sign that ticket". I said what happens if I don't? He said then I will have to arrest you and it won't look good in court. So I signed it, went to court and contested it, and the judge said he would take it "under advisement", which means you get a letter about two weeks later saying you are guilty and need to pay the fine. The ticket when you sign it is an AGREEMENT that you will either pay it or come to court. Isn't that by its very nature a contract? Essentially, you are being forced to give goods(money) and/or services(community service) to the municipality, but you don't get any benefit for it. The officer is forcing you to contractually agree to pay the citation or show up under threat of arrest if you don't agree. Here are some officer pet peeves too. "I am going to have to give you a ticket". He doesn't have to do anything. Why can't he simply say, " I want to give you a ticket" . How about this one? "Its for your own safety". How does he know what is safe and unsafe for me? I would also like to know why they can speed with impunity but I can't. My personal opinion is this. If you have to lie to get out of a ticket, do it, do whatever you have to do to get out of it, because in court, that policeman is going to do whatever he can to make sure that ticket sticks so he won't look bad. I have yet to see a policeman ever admit in court that he may have made a mistake. Also, the deal that tickets are for revenue recognition is right on. Why do you think they have photo radar and redlight camera's? How those can be constitutional is beyond me since you are supposed to have the right to cross examine your accuser. How can you cross examine a camera? One other thought provoking question. If I get a ticket and fail to show up for court, they will issue a failure to appear warrant for me. Why don't they do that when the cop doesn't show up? Why is he not held in contempt, and why do they automatically rescehdule the hearing? Shuoldn't he have to pay a fee for wasting the courts time? I bet I would.
