Subies rock man. Way to slap that guy around. Disclaimer Oh and by the way, what you did is illegal street racing and I would not want to give any young people the impression that my opinion represents the opinion of the board, in general, nor its administrators and owner(s).
  2. I would start with the basics first, which means plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Then I would set the timing. After that I would disconnect the harness at the AFM and ECU and spray the connections down with brake clean and reconnect. If it still runs crappy, you need to start testing stuff, and a factory manual is the only way to go there. A more descriptive detail on what happens would help. DOes it spit thru the AFM when you start it? Does a bunch of black smoke come out of the tail pipe? What happens when you start it and just let it idle, will it die? Also you do know that you are not supposed to give a fuel injected car any pedal prior to and during the starting process, right? See if any of that helps.
  3. I did not have a stock turbo, but a Rayjay, and although hard to explain, the compressor housing physically bolted to the backing plate. It was a really sweet turbo as far as taking it off the car and dissasembly. To bad it broke. What are the plugs gapped at? If they are much over 40 thou, that is to much. This is a real long shot, but is the harmonic dampner loose? Seems like I had misfiring issue's on an NA engine with a loose dampner. I still would like to see what the fuel pressure and flow is like. I would suspect you should be able to get somewhere between a half to a full gallon in one minute. I really don't think you are to rich, I am leaning towards lean, or some sort of bad connection or faulty part. Also, this is a real stretch, make sure you don't have a shop rag stuffed into something in the intake plumbing. Maybe even go so far as to spray out the AFM with some brake clean. Is the coil weak? I can't think of anything else besides the harness itself.
  4. Or you can use an 87 Maxima alternator, swap the serpentine pulley, and have a 90 amp Nissan alternator, with an internal fan, which is a lot cleaner than one with an external fan. I went this route on my ZXT and it is way better. Car runs better too. I will be going that route on my 260 once I get it up and running and stopping. The maxima alternator bolts up the same as any L series alternator.
  5. If the suspicion is that it is lean, disconnect the head temp sensor and see if it runs better. My turbo 240 had issue's with the first harness I used, and I never could get it right so I ended up replacing the harness. It would not run right, and I had to disconnect the head temp sender to make it run, but it was to rich. I used resistors, but that was a pain and they always ended up breaking or something. I went thru all sorts of stuff trying to make it work. Have you checked fuel pressure and flow? That could be another area. Of course with a presssure gauge and a test drive, pressure will drop if flow is not there. If you have a leak in the hoses after the turbo, the car will be rich once boost hits, not lean. I had a turbo that leaked around the compressor housing, and it was the most frustrating thing to track down. When I hit 0 psi, the got black smoke and stumbling, and eventually it would clear up and run right if you stayed in it. When I fixed the leak and drove it, it boosted instantly to well over 20 psi and popped one of my intercooler connector hoses that was rubber, and I had to use some duct tape just to get it back to the shop to replace the hose.
  6. Well Jeffp's setup is a stroker with an 88mm bore I believe. His last dyno run netted 415hp to the wheels and 473 ft=lbs. His engine is pretty thoroughly massaged though. I don't know what the difference would be between stroked vs stock stroke. I would suspect the major difference would be in the torque output. I would go with the P90 head. I am not a fan of those hydraulic lifters, and they are expensive to replace. I would also recommend a good intercooler and skipping the stock one route. Stock intercoolers just are not up to the task of handling the boost that a modified engine puts out, and a good spearco is not to expensive.
  7. Actually Jim, in Tomohawks case, Oregon probably has mandatory insurance laws, and when your license is revoked, which I bet his was, you have to have some sort of insurance. We call it Sr22 in Alabama. If his deal is anything like ours, he will have to have the insurance in force before he gets his license, and he will have to maintain it for a period of time or they will take his license away again. Alabama does that to DUI people, uninsured motorists if you pursue them, and I am sure for multiple ticket offenders and FTA's on tickets. I have heard about the deal Kevin was talking about, and I think any sort of quota/commission deal indicates a revenue generating plan, not law enforcement. I know police officers in Auburn who did not like their quota system and got in trouble every month for not making quota. It was not technically a quota since they only had to meet the average of tickets written by all the officers, but just the same it encouraged ticketing to stay out of trouble. We had some law passed that only state troopers could write tickets on the interstates in alabama to keep some of these "municipalities" from generating revenue. Guess what, when there was a wreck on the interstate, they told everyone to call a state trooper. Nothing like waiting an hour and a half to get a trooper to write you an accident report on a minor fender bender. If you want to fight the system because you were treated wrong, or are not guilty, I am all for it. If the system says you are guilty and you need to pay up, pay your fine and consider yourself lucky. I don't know what your fines would have cost Tomohawk, but 5 years of not driving would have made me think about paying them and being a little more careful. Yes I still don't like cops, generally speaking, and I still have no problem doing whatever you need to do to get out of a ticket, but when the judge says guilty, you should pay up. In truth, maybe I just have an issue with authority figures, or maybe it is because I have had a couple of tickets that the cop was completely wrong about giving me. I still paid my fines. Am I jaded, yes. Do I get pissed about it some times, hell yes. Here is one other thing to think about too. I know someone mentioned this. I don't want to be in an accident that is my fault in which someone gets injured. I just witnessed one the other day where some impatient, lowlife scumbag driving on a revoked license with no insurance pulled out in front of a young 6 weeks preganant girl and her friend, and they totaled their Pathfinder, and it is by a miracle she did not hit me and my wife head on because if she did, ol' LJ would probably still be in the hospital, if not dead. They went to separate hospitals in different ambulances, and when the driver left, she was not feeling things in her legs, and could not feel my hand on her leg as me and another guy tried to get her to be still and not move until the paramedics got there. See the guy who caused this accident is never going to amount to anything, he is never going to make any money, and he probably has no assets worth taking, so this girl, her parents, and her insurance company are screwed. Guess who pays for it, we do thru higher insurance costs. Anyway, just another perspective on things.
  8. Check on ebay, there are t4's for sale all the time. You probably need two V trim or larger turbos, and you probably don't want to get to large on the exhaust ar since the engine is a smallblock. I would say P trim turbine wheel and start at a .69 ar housing.
  9. If you have 11k, you can do pretty much any of the swaps you talked about, IMO. I think the Sr20 would be sweet, but I think the 280turbo engine would be cheaper still. Besides the fact it fits with no real modifications. I would think the LT1 and 6 speed would be enough engine to put you in the 12's, but there are going to be a lot of conversion issue's like speedometer cable, clutch actuation, trans mounting, shifter position, driveshaft, etc. That is what sucks up money faster than rosanne can demolish an all you can eat buffet. The other factor is how much of the work can you do? If you have to pay someone, hipo work is expensive, so you should figure about half of that money for labor.
  10. I think there is a steering box issue with one of the ZX's but don't know which one. The T04b's can make 450 or so HP, the E's do a little more because they can run efficiently at higher boost pressures. My T04b fits in my ZX, but just barely. I cannot clock the compressor housing with the turbo on the manifold. Even if the turbo is an E housing, and you have to space it out a little, the stock oil supply line can be tweeked to match up. On the bottom, if it doesn't line up on the drain, cut off the bottom part and get some good oil resistant hose, and run that from the turbo to the oil pan. The stock AFM hose is to small at the turbo side to connect to a T4, but you can go to any tractor trailer parts store and get nitrile 3 inch connectors, and use 3 inch exhaust pipe to fab something up. I can tell you this, when I was running stock fuel injection, I put the afm in fronf of the radiator, and it did not like it, especially when cold. Once warm it was ok. The 60-1 is a good sized turbo, so you really need to watch your boost until you have the fuel supply covered, or you will have more than just a dead turbo.
  11. I think NA strokers are putting down 180+ to the wheels, depending on induction, headwork, and camshaft. Bob is right, there is no such thing as a cheap stroker engine. Also, some of the turbo guys have been having problems with the harmonic balancer tearing up when going to the stroker crank. I also think we determined the stroker crank weighs 3 pounds more than a stock crank. The basic buildup uses a 240Z rod, and you want the one's with 9mm rod bolts, which should be replaced with ARP ones, IMO. I think you run the Z24 piston, and have to bore the block out to 89 mm. That is where things get expensive, you have to bore the block, get new pistons, perhaps notch the block, rebalance the assembly because it will be way off, etc. Good machine work is expensive. I had close to 1500 in my shortblock alone, and I did not do anything exotic except go to 1mm over forged pistons. Not even a stroker. You will definitely need a cam and header if NA to make any kind of decent power, and SU's work, although side drafts would be a better choice.
  12. Anything can fit, it is just how easy is it. My bet is the engine is a little long and firewall modification will be required.
  13. I think you are missing a major opportunity with your son, and I got news for you, unless you forbid him to drive the Z or only let him drive it when you are with him, he will find out how fast it goes. Kids have a natural curiosity that has to be satisfied, and they do not have the ability to grasp the concept of their limited mortality at his age, IMO. The other thing is this. I can't remember enough of what was said about trying to get out of a ticket thru careful choice of words to put it into play, and neither can the rest of us, except for the author. I think you should understand that there is a general feeling people have about getting over on the police. If there wasn't, there would not have been so many Smokey and the Bandit movies, the Dukkes of Hazzard, The Cannonball Run, and I am sure there are others. Yeah street racing is illegal in every state in the union. You have done it by your own admission, and I guess if you have changed your ways, good for you. If you don't like people posting kill stories, don't read them, or put a post in theirs saying that what they did is illegal. Look at the announcements section where there is a big get together at the Drag Strip in Montgomery AL this month. If we were all a bunch of lawless crazy street racing fools, why would the thing be going on at a drag strip? The best quote I have ever heard on this subject goes something like this. "Let he who is sinless cast the first stone".
  14. I bet that is an Arizona Z cowl hood with some mods. You could check with them and see if they have any more.
  15. Yeah Mike I agree with that. I usually ask if they know how to do an L series head, and if they can't tell me the basic keep the stem heights consistent, I move on. Finding a good L series machinist is not always easy.
  16. I don't like the adjustable rod at the slave cylinder. the proper way to adjust it is on the clutch pedal. Sounds like a slave cylinder issue to me. I have had them go out when I changed transmissions and clutches espeically.
  17. I don't know about that DAW, I have always heard to shim the springs too. That mod is a good one too. I just have never went thru the trouble of tracking down the longer valves. I would have to do that to run the reground cam I picked up. Man that thing is ground below the shaft. I have room with the crower I have right now.
  18. He should have to run exhaust too. Why not do this. Race him and if you win, race him not using the transbrake to appease him. That way, if you win both times, what is he gonna say? I personally like to race someone elses race because when you beat them, they can't come back snivelling with excuses. Ultimately, it is your decision. I live by the old saying. You run what you brung, and hope you brung enough. I am planning on being there to watch the action though. Doesn't look like I will have my turbo up and going by then, so I have to settle for watching some other folks run. I wish both of you the best of luck.
  19. Hey Fast Frog, since Mike and a few others got blessed out for our "lawlessness" , I have to offer the responsible law abiding solution. See I am an older fellow, so I have to set an example. Sorry. I remember that C&D test, and the Corvette was the King on invisibility if I remember correctly. I would not mess with a jammer. Instead of just getting a ticket, you are likely to get a federal charge, as someone has already mentioned. When I weigh the choice in my mental scale, the ticket is the way to go. Also remember if you drive a car with a big wing on it, neon, strobe light, stickers, a fart can muffler, and stripes, you don't need to try and speed anyway. You already attract enough attention to yourself, and are probably going 20 mph just sitting still. Slide under the radar, and drive an innocuous car. I also have a theory that if you bought a car and made it look like an unmarked police car, you could speed with impunity, but I don't have the money to test that theory yet.
  20. I wonder if that was just not a defective cap, or an old one. I was just planning on using a stock nissan 300zx coil since it is fully capable of firing off my turbo engine at 22psi. I can't help but think that would be a good thing. I am going to try it and see what happens. I don't drive the car everyday anyway, and can always stuff and extra cap and rotor in it.
  21. While I will be the first person to voice my disdain for police officers in general, I have found that with age comes a realization that I am not young and invincible either. Yes I have gotten my share of tickets, most of which I deserved, and I have gotten a few that I did not. I guess those sort of make up for all the stuff I did that I did not get caught doing. I know those guys/gals have a job to do, and there are parts of it that are thankless, like the one's who died in NYC last year. I am sure they have frustrations like not being able to do what is effective in their area's, like profiling. I am also sure it is frustrating when they run into a chump with a good lawyer who is out of jail before they have done the paperwork. You know what, though, that's life. There are always going to be people who take stuff to the extreme, like liberals. (Sorry could not resist)There are always going to be people who break the law and get away with it, and there are people who don'tbreak the law and get busted anyway. Our system is not perfect, and if we fixed a few of its flaws, it could be better. I think most of the people on here have a pretty good track record of trying to hold people to obeying the law, and accepting responsibility for their actions, whatever they may be. I know for sure Mike does, and so does Pete and ScottieGNZ and a few others that are out there that I don't see as often. I do to, and for the most part I am a law abiding citizen who gets along well with the law enforcement in my area. That said, there are still police officers out there that treat you like you are a thug, even though you are polite, cordial, and agreeable with them. Those are the one's I don't like. I also will make no bones about the fact that I say nothing beyind what is required, and just like my insurance co says, don't admit fault for anything. Call me a hipocrit or whatever. I do my best to obey the law. After all, if a police officer askes you if you know why he pulled you over, are you going to say " yes sir it is because I was doing 125 in a 45, and I was racing that guy in the Z28, and I had 3 beers at supper" ? I would like to see more emphasis put on them doing things like giving people tickets for passing in the emergency lane, running up the emergency lane to merge into traffic, running red lights on purpose, pulling out in front of people when the road is wide open behind you, and busting people playing loud freakin music at an intersection, oh yeah, and trucks hauling rocks without a TIGHT cover. All I am asking for is some balance. SO I guess you can say I am generally in favor of obeying the laws. However, I would be lying if I didn't say deep down inside, sometimes, I just like the rebelous thought of getting away with something. Sometimes that comes to the surface in what I say, and I still firmly believe you should do whatever you can to keep from being convicted of a traffic offense. If you get convicted, pay the fine and go on your merry way.
  22. Is that the thing that installs inside the distributor? I have a points distributor that came out of a 260 engine, but don't want to use it.
  23. If you have to 240mm flywheel, get the Nissan 300ZXT pressure plate and clutch disc. If is a 600 KG unit, with stock engagement. It is more than substantial enough. The Centerforce DF will eat your flywheel, at least the one's I have seen run will. I would rather replace a clutch than a flywheel, but that is just me. If you have a 225mm flywheel, get the sports option pressure plate from Nismo. It is a 780KG pressure plate, but it is pricey at like 250 or so. It is plenty stout, and engages like stock.
  24. I always heard that a hummingbird depth finder would work, but Car and Driver tested all the radar jammers a while ago and the results were they were ineffective at best. Get a Valentine One one of those Bear Tracker things uniden makes, drive a black car that sits low to the ground with no visible reflective objects facing forward, and you will have about the best defense you can have, next to not speeding.
  25. HOw can you change points on an electronic distributor?
