  1. CART and IRL are back together now but the catch was that they all run Honda motors... I think it was CART that was being the baby and called for that plan... To say the least I wasn't impressed because it was really kinda like F1 in the sense of it was a race against teams AND companies. You know like, Team Penske wins with a Mercedes engine and this chassis, only an example. Never really found F1 to be welcoming to America though... I always rooted for Greg Moore in CART and then when he died I was like :/ meh. Died last race of the season, was supposed to race with Team Penske the next season, Castro. took his spot. Even though that was coming on 10 years ago, Castro. won Indy with Team Penske after having his butt bailed out. >_> Just saying. I don't know the full details on this or anything but first thing that comes to mind is that those big name teams are bitching due to restrictions which is silly because aren't they trying to make the sport better to watch with close races? My opinion, that just goes to show that they know they have an advantage whether it be fair or unfair and they're too hell bound to give it up so that they can still win by you know like... 3 minutes from 2nd place.
  2. Same, almost 100 as you know here in Texas and with a 185 thermostat and a 16" fan set to come on at like 195 or so, it runs fine. Offset the fan to the left or right side because the water pump pulley invades the center area and the fan motor won't fit. I'm using a stock '83 turbo radiator with a bottle of water wetter which I can't really say works but can't really say doesn't work, oh well. Oh and I use only a little antifreeze with distilled water to try and avoid all that muck and impurities which separate out after a while. Probably doesn't work but its a peace of mind. :]
  3. I was under the impression that you would either buy or use the reservoirs from your old MS, thats just me though.
  4. I checked O'Rileys and they said they could get them for under $40. I'm curious what really comes with the setup because thats so cheap it makes me suspicious.
  5. Very true. You have to test it out somehow. Jim Hall had a snow mobile engine running a giant fan under his lemans car I think with side skirts on it and such to suck the car to the ground. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaparral_Cars
  6. Hey guys apparently my tail light lens fell of while driving and I need one quick. This is what I mean: Should just be held on with some glue and a gasket or something. There aren't and screws holding it on and its all one piece. I have 280 tail light assemblies but the top red, bottom red, and reverse lenses are all separate pieces so I don't think those will work.
  7. You don't want close up ones... Clear coat had some sags and I did it outside/in the garage so there is a bit of dust on some areas. I have to wet sand and buff and it should be fine. I don't care about the dust nibs but the sags look like someone dumped a bucket on them. I bought Nason everything from "Taylors". 1 quart etching primer with 1 quart reducer, 1 quart 2k primer with 1 pint of reducer or hardener whatever it is, 2 quarts of sealer ready spray which freaked me out because it had like a really thick mud/goop/slop at the bottom so I thought it had gone bad and it probably did but it still worked lovely, 2 quarts base coat (BMW Lemans Blue) with 1 quart reducer and no activator because its such a tiny amount, 1 gallon of Legacy Finishes clear with 1 quart activator/reducer. All that was $320 or something like that. Then I bought 40-80-220-500-1000-1200-2000 grit paper, Harbor Freight spray gun which actually came with a large gun and a small detail gun for only $60! I'm not a big proponent on the whole spend $300 on a spray gun because it sprays "better", as far as I'm concerned, this one sprayed very well. Then I bought a can of Dynaglass but that crap doesn't feather in very wel at all so Taylors talked me into this Dolphin Glaze self leveling stuff for $14 per pouch. I had no luck with it at all. Its self leveling so basically that just means its thin and it runs so its only good on horizontal surfaces. You add enough hardener and it hardens too fast, atleast for someone like me because you can't scrape it up with your putty spatchula thing, it just drips off. So then I was like alright I'll add a little less and it never dried so then I had to sand it all off. I said screw it and bought a can of bondo for $10 and did the entire car with one can. I used have of the Dolphin Glaze on ONE DOOR so that was like a waste of $14 for me. I didn't invest in a gas mask with the canisters. I had one of thsoe dust masks but it was beefed up and had a really thick cotton face to it. I'm not dead and when I was finished painting you could see all the blue it had caught. You could still smell the fumes pretty bad though. To save on paint and sanding time I bought 3 cans of black Krylon so the inside of the hood will get that, my mirrors were sprayed with that, and the rear spoiler. When the door jams start to flake, if ever, I will just Krylon black them. Lots of other little things that I didn't mention but everything together I should be at like $400-$450 and it took me a god awful 3 months to do it with school. The sanding down to bare metal was the worst part because I was doing it with one of those carbon disks, wire brush, and a die grinder for the entire car. I thought I wasn't going to have enough paint because with the 1 quart of etching primer and its 1 quart of reducer, thats 2 quarts of fluid and I only got one pass over the entire car but it was my first time. I decided to spray only the body work areas with the 2k primer and I got 3 coats by doing that. 1 coat of sealer, which I had to toss like half a quart out of each can because of the goop at the bottom. I shook the can well but when I went to stir it I felt it and flipped ape ♥♥♥♥ thinking it went bad over the past 3 months of having it in a closed can. I didn't want the goop in my gun but if you didn't stir it, it sprayed out like a water. It was clear and really thin,so I stirred it and like I said, tossed a lot to avoid getting the stuff in my gun. You only do one coat of sealer, it flashes off to a satin finish, then 3 coats of base, and 2 coats of clear. I still have a good half gallon if it left but I was getting too many runs so I called it quits. I have plenty of pics if anyone wants me to post, just let me know. Next up is EDIS and 4 wheel disks! Yay! I still need to save up atleast $800 for college. :/
  8. Finally finished the big stuff! Now I just have emblems and seals. I'm happy but I'm sad because of some other stuff. But at least I'm done now. This beater: Tada! My momma and myself. Hurrah! Time for another open header spin but this time its 6-3-2's.
  9. Making me cry with that sad story. I've seen some dude on ebay advertising an e31 or e88 head for the same thing. They read up in a book that the smaller combustion chamber and big ports make it a racing head when in reality, you can use any head you want and play with the headgasket, deck height, rods, pin height, milled heads, etc. for higher compression. Of course you have to go by whatever the rules are asking for. All in all, he was trying to sell a bare head with no cam/valves/springs/anything for like $1000 buy it now. Utterly ridiculous. EDIT: I found it. He must have reposted it wondering why no one bought it. I was wrong about what it comes with, he has the solid lifters and thats it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DATSUN-240Z-E88-L6-Cylinder-head_W0QQitemZ150346710494QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item23015cbdde&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65%3A3|39%3A1|240%3A1318
  10. Indeed. I have less than $200 invested in my EDIS system. However I'm using Megajolt and not Megasquirt.
  11. Alright guys I'm here to appologies for my irresponsible and rude behavior. At first I didn't think anyone would come but there were a few guys on here that hyped up the whole experience, thank you for that. Unfortunately, 37 hours is not enough time to go from sanding bondo to completed, painted, drivable car. In other words, with rushing, I still didn't make it. Dad called me up at 12 saying everything is over and that two Z guys, Wayne and Ryan, had showed up. To you guys I'm honestly very sorry that I didn't arrive. It was a big piss in your Cherios and I know I pissed you guys off and disappointed you. Although that was the most horrible first impression for me, I hope we can have another chance to get together and this time my car won't be in pieces on the garage floor. Hopefully it was a nice open house, hopefully the food was alright (sometimes I wonder), and hopefully it wasn't a complete waste of time. Not only am I pissed at myself for missing the open house because my arrival is important to not only you guys but everyone else who was there, but I also feel like a big butthole for saying "hey come on guys lets do this!" and then I'm not there. So once again, I'm truly sorry for this. Hopefully you guys had a good time, and maybe we can plan a get together some other day when we have all of our Z's sorted out to flaunt to each other. Unfortunately Sparky, the only pictures I have are of my car being painted and put together and even that doesn't look good because my clear coat has a ton of runs and dust particles stuck in it. If you have horrible near sighted vision like myself, it looks good from about 20 feet away. :/
  12. Today is the day guys. Take your time please. I'm putting my car together as we speak. In case you didn't think you could go from no paint to painted and running in 2 days. You're wrong. >_< I am on hour 27, thats with drying times.
  13. Looks good and sounds good!
  14. Kitty litter works really well. We use it for any oil spots. Pour some on and then rub it in with your foot. no more spot. :] And instead of tossing it when you're done, brush it up and reuse until it gets a nasty color, it will usually keep absorbing. That dry film is from all the suspended particles I would think. For instance, I had to wipe my car down several times before painting because one wipe would dry and leave residue. If you have a drain in the floor like at our place you can get a water hose and a broom, spray and sweep several times. We don't like using any detergents or chemicals near the cars and we aren't too picky about whether the floor shines or not, just like it to be clean.
  15. Yes but Kameari is very expensive, however you get what you payfor. Consider the following though, forged pistons are forged pistons, I'm sure Ross pistons, although "expensive" too, isn't as pricey as Kameari pistons and probably works just fine. Some things that I would go for if I looked into them would be headers, ignition, etc. Ignition I think they use like a turbo optical dizzy with an ignition box? Not sure but it reminds me of MSD which is $500 less. I think my final masses were like 703g or something. I used a three beam scale to weigh big and small ends and then an electric scale for overall mass. A good idea is to mark on the scale surface where the big end (or small end) lays, line up all the other rods on the scale in the same position when you use the scales. Sometimes if you have say like 1" of rod hanging off the edge, and the next rod you lay on the there differently so there is say 3" hanging off the edge, you will get different readings.
  16. Stock 240 rods and with a bench grinder and a die grinder you can polish them and lighten if you really want to. I didn't do any lightening on mine, just balanced everything because these rods don't have "balancing pads" so when you go to lighten and balance, you're taking away from structural integrity. At least, thats the general idea. Removing the casting flash and all the ridges should be fine. Make sure you keep the oil hole open on the side! I can't remember but I think it was used for flinging oil up onto the cylinder walls but sometimes it flings too much and causes a problem. I ground mine off but left the hole open from debris. I would change a few things on my set to say the least. If you are thinking of having someone else polish and balance your rods, consider buying after market setups because it takes a lot of labor... Stock: Ground off flash and casting: Polished: Shot peened (finished): As you can see I am on a budget also. No forged pistons for me. Treat the motor well and it will do fine. Unless you turbocharge it, then I'm clueless about how the pistons would up. Probably melt. Oh and there was a V07 crank on ebay last week I think for $400-something. Don't know if it sold but you might as well grab the first one you see if its in the 3-400's. People recognize that they have value, and not for a diesel motors.
  17. What you need is an engine calculator to get a scheme of things. This has general presets: http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/calcs/engine%20builder/index.html This is king pin with lots of inputs and presets, you can change them to whatever measurement you like as usual: http://www.ozdat.com/ozdatonline/enginedesign/ Play with it, figure out what works, order your parts, measure them so you know they're the right size, build, burnout.
  18. You know how tempted I'm going to be to go nutso... Yah, its going to be bad. I'm going to push REALLY hard to make it to the exhaust shop. I have the pipe and the different headers, I just need them to be joined together. However, we had a transformer flip ♥♥♥♥ in the backyard last night from all those storms. From 7pm-1am we were powerless. Everytime they switched the power on, the transformer would freak out spit sparks and flames. >_< So now I'm a day behind! The car isn't painted and in pieces BUT I will paint it and put it together on Friday. Nothing screams ballzy more than open headers and fresh paint. Knowing my luck, a truck will throw rocks up on 820...
  19. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xk6mr_kramer-gets-a-kidney-stone Have fun with that. :] Oh and:
  20. That second video he's ramming the dude like a child. Kinda pissed me off a little. Thats the sole reason why I hate Spec Miata actually. They all drive like kids.
  21. Read in the previous post, 90mm may not be the limit, but I don't know if Tony D was talking about the n42 block or f54. 90mm rather than 89mm more gives you 70cc more.
  22. If you hold onto them for 4 or 5 years, I'll buy them after college. >_>
  23. Oh geez I hope you aren't like "this sucks you ruined my day" Dad said everyone in the Triumph club meeting told him they would be there. We already have all the food, lots of fruits, sweet bread, tamales, other mexican stuff since my step mom is mexican and she just HAD to force mexican food onto an otherwise British and Japanese gathering. Haha Oh and if the worst occurs, my car will be ready and drivable, but open header... It'll be cool for about the first 5 minutes of the 45 minute drive there. Hopefully DWG and Pantego police don't destroy me. The car HATES being driven under 2500 RPM so its like... we'll see what happens if I can't make it to the exhaust shop on Friday.
