Mechanical Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering Technology
240hoke replied to Pete84's topic in Non Tech Board
I guess it depends on what type of job you are looking for. I would personally go ME if I was you. if your going to do it you might as well DO IT. I am a Junior In mechanical engineering at NC State. Im not sure exactly what you would be qualified to do with a MET degree. At our school its more hands on stuff.... We have a lot of people at work who are MET's ... they do mostly solids drawings. I think caculus and diffeq are fundamental classes everyone should have to take. They teach us more then math.. they teach problem solving and how the world works. I find it amazing that SHO has gotten by without using calc. You cant even solve a basic vibrations or solids problem without calculus and diff eq's. -
1_fast_Z - Using the Z32 slave works a lot better for a start if your not already using it. The inlet is on top instead of the bottom. I was able to make my lines work fine, but you may need to grab a slightly longer flex line from autozone or something. I believe Garret used a 240sx line of some sort I i can remember correctly. NC_Chris - Yes, But I think you might be just as well off cutting it out and building all new mounts. I would have done this if I had more time, i was in a crunch to get to SEZ. It may be even easier still to design a cross member that bolts to the bottom of your floor pan... makes servicing it much easier, just add reinforcements to the floor. Just some ideas.

BAD ASS . (period) Cant wait to see it at DNI either!

Good luck with the after market ECM... youll end up with a 2500 dollar computer that still doesn't work as good as the factory unit. I would get the ECU and engine harness for the year heads your wanting to run. You'll need the engine harness, dash harness, ECM, BCM, NATS antennea, and a key from the 350z. And there is a way to get it running. But if I told ya how I'd have to shoot you

I commute on a XR650R Im not sure if it counts as quite a bike or not

This might be a good topic to make another thread on.... Anyway Ive been draggin' my butt lately on this project. Been working on some other thigns that I now have wrapped up so Im ready to get back to work. With spring break around the corner I'm hoping to finish up the fuel and wiring and then she will be almost done. I'm using the stock ECU and wiring harness Anyhow Ill be updating this thread as I go as well as my website.

over the past couple years I have had an e36, e46, and now a 350z. The 3 series were super practical and fun to drive. I always had the 2 door coupes but could always somehow manage to get all my crap in them and I did alot of part running. Fold down rear seats large trunks. I even had a trailer hitch on my e46 to tow my motorcycles. My latest daily is my 350z its by far the most fun of the bunch Storage room is a little lacking though... okay a lot lacking. Im going to be putting a hitch on it though hehe. My girlfriend also has a 93 Miata which is a SUPER FUN little car. Lots of mods out there and handles nad drive great. Not much storage though at all... and forget it if your over 6 foot heh. Oh yea it leaks in the rain but gets great gas mileage

yea they could use a steering stabilizer to minimize wandering buuttt Get a super moto!!

As far as the sumo's If you gear them right they will cruise at 70-75 no problems at all. They are also really compfy since you sit so upright... Im plann on having mine where i can swap back and forth from street to dirt... I wanna take it on the trans-america trail this summer.

I ride a GSXR600 swapped with a 750 race motor everyday. I did a couple track days/schools on it. Street bikes are awesome machines but there is no sense in owning one unless you plan on riding it..... most people who ride them on the street don't even use 50% of their potential. After riding mine on the track I have lost a lot of the desire to ride it on the street. I actually have it for sale now. I cant ride it for more then an hour without my hands going numb and my back hurting... and Im 21. That and if I twist my right hand for over 1/2 sec I could get my license revoked! I recently bought a new Honda XR650R, I am converting it to a supermoto and just got it street legal in NC. I really think SUMO's are sweet bikes. Easy to ride, and just a blast. Its a dirtbike at heart to if you drop it your not out 1000 bucks, just pick it up and go. You can hang it out in the turns and put knobbies on it and go off roading on the weekends. And btw these thing can RIP IT around short tracks. Ive watched CR's hunt down 1000's on the patriot course at VIR on 450SM's If I was you I would personally look into a suzuki DRZ400SM, Husquvarna SM610 or even an Aprillia if you can afford it. Here is what Im talking about. Here one is kinda gross but its an idea of what mine will look like when its finished:

Ewww ouch that looks painfull. Go ahead and burn it too so you wont have a finger print!! We should start a watch those fingers thread! here is my personal finger heh, happened a while ago. Went under a chain around a gear on my trials bike, things can happen in a blink of an eye even if you are careful. Take precautions and be prepared! This is after several years I wish i had some pictures of it after sugery heh.

I can get you some numbers tomorrow its in my shop at home. -
I have used the viny paint as well and have had very good results. I resprayed my entire dash and all my plastics with it. I just went with the same color, black. It however made everything look nice again and has held up very well. Its very thin and is almost more of a dye.

LOL, that made me laugh...I felt like I was on a bimmer forum for a second. Just what exactly do you mean by that?

I filled in the stock Nissan with bondo and then laid chrome vinyl over that and trimmed it so it blends into the edge. Then I laid the Datsun vinyl on top of that... it turned out pretty nice. The red and blue is vinyl as well. From more then a foot away it looks like the stock emblem.

I agree, and I've had a similar problem lol. If we could all turn off our computers and tv's we would finish those projects about 50X faster. While the internet can be used as an awesome tool I think its mostly used a huge time waster. Face book, AIM, Forums, whatever I think most people just waste time online. Another thing that I think about a lot is that forums decrease creativity. I sometimes try not to look around at other designs before I do something so i will be forced to come up with something more unique. Sometimes i think you learn more faster from getting out there and figuring out things for yourself then sitting online for hours hoping to find somebody else who has done it and can give you the info you need. This doesnt apply to everyting obviously but... maybe you get what im saying. Crap im spending to much time online gotta get back to tv
-
it probably similar to the stuff used in ALOT of new cars... specifically BMW. I hate that crap. While it probably looks great brand new after a while it will start to wear off and look horrible. I guess I just have something against it because im my BMW 330 alot of the console was done like this. I spent hours scraping it off to reveal the plastic underneath which was the same color and looked better!!!!! I too would take to time to cover it in cloth.
-
heh, gotta pay tribute: Played around with some vinyl stickers. I gotta fill in the Nissan to make it look good but the trial emblem turned out nice.

Awesome work Gabe, valve cover looks sweet! Glad to see my motor living on in glory... Im sure you'll put down better times then me lol. Cant wait to see it at DNI .
