Can you predict my LS1 quarter mile time???
Mudge replied to cyrus's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Single 2.5" or dual? The Z28 gets a single 2.75" bleh -
http://www.csboyfriend.com/korean.htm Looks pretty cheap

Are you guys using each other for what toys the other has? Just kidding of course. I only know of 3 generations of the Supra, it was about 3050 pounds one gen, 3650+ another! Then finally down to Camaro weight at 3450. Sure the turbo gear adds weight, but I am guessing they got sloppy with weight because the power "makes up for it", and a heavy car is a comfortable riding car (Caddy). But, turbos have some big plusses too, power + good gas mileage can be achieved, something to be said for that!

1 candle/3 candle is a more accurate description, because "3x" the light does not actually go 3x the distance. I forget the law its called, but basically twice the light will go 1.5x the distance or somewhere thereabouts. Kind of like surface area of bone versus mass when you talk a 5 foot person versus a 6 foot, the ratios are very different, non-linear scale.

Brad, everything looks vera sexy One by one the heads are kinda light, 2 of em and they get heavy
-
Looking good, I'm definately in the 20s, I should know in 2-3 days what my MPG is.
-
Stock rear, I road race, and I want limited slip. However, I am not positive the gearing is stock, because if my TACH is accurate, then I'm doing 3400 RPM in 5th with 195/60 15s on an early 5 speed (70MPH). If my guages were to be accurate I'd just about have a 3.90 or 3.70 already, which I am doubtfull of but I dont know.

Anything other than centerlines fit 72' 240Z ?
Mudge replied to a topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Wow, if they fit without adapters that is a good deal. Otherwise, you can get front wheel drive wheels off eBay for $350ish, for some decent looking 16x7" stuff, and 17s for the added bling value if wanted. -
Zline, I'm in NorCal but I may sell my flat top F54, I dont know yet. 175k mile, stock bore shortblock. But, you can find them in yards.
-
I dont like automagics, but $700 is a pretty good price. Remember the V8 sits a bit further back, so its not all going to be "crappy" weight in the Z.
-
Put a cage and some door bars in the Z and you are "safe". You could even weld the doors shut for additional strength If I bought a bigger car like the Supra (3450 pounds), I'd just get a V8, but that is my where my bias leans, for many reasons.

Brad, I actually just picked them up today. The box was HUGE, the two women that pulled the box out to the car on a flat bed (once they somehow got it up there), said to me "as we walked by the smallest car in the parking lot, we both said I hope that isn't his car..." LoL The box could fit a washing machine I think We tore it down and I tossed the stuff in the car, I haven't really looked yet though and am about to pass out for a nap (boy do I sound old?). Took me awhile to get the stuff because I had to go to UPS or be home to sign for it, so I had to find a way to get down there before closin'. I'm sure everything is great, packaging was durable Thanks Brad!

LoL, I dont know if she is for sale. I have been a long time fan of korean women though, mmmmm

Heh, actually he is the guy that came up with it. He pulled another eBay auction, editited it, and voila!

Sounds like great feedback I have the R200 on a shelf, so I would have easy access and time to work on it. Rear end setup is a somewhat precision process that sometimes pro shops doing get right, and gears get eaten up.

Yep, usually the stronger cast iron blocks will tell you thier nickel content % or just tell you 'high nickel content'.

Can you predict my LS1 quarter mile time???

Road race that sucker, that thing will put the smack down! -
Nothing gets people in a bad mood like busted parts that cost $$$ downtime + broke = crap
-
I think I'll pickup a Quaife for the R200 that I have now, it looks like the way to go, although a lighter C4 would be nice the gearing would have to be changed, and maybe more hassle and swearing than I could readily stand right now. I dont know if the product is still MADE, but it is listed on the Quaife site as a $1245 part, so I have no idea how people are getting $1600 for it, unless it is indeed only listed for historical purposes. Its about $45 less for the R180 part.

Definately an awesome time, a Z28 miiiiiiight pull a high 12 but more like a 13 second car. I see alot of Z cars only pulling Z28 numbers, even though they are 1000+ pounds lighter, so you did quite well IMO! Imagine an NA car, getting ~20 MPG and running high 9s! -
Big car is one thing, heavy has nothing to do with safety IMO, unless you are looking at a 5,000 caddy in hopes of stopping all other cars like a brick wall. With that in mind, the Supra isn't all that big. But engine vs engine, the Supra has OBVIOUSLY been taken to further points in the horsepower range. I know a guy who dumped about 60k on totally tearing down a Supra (he bought it because he thought it was cheap for the power, obviously he strayed from the path of intent), and turned about 650 HP with tuning issues. If you dont want to work on the car and tune it yourself I dont know why anyone less than filthy rich puts themselves into that position. If you want safe, get a big car. I like little cars though for many reasons, you could always get a well built cage though. Bank on that running you about 2k. I dont know that I've heard of Supras with more than 987 or so RWHP, but thats way more than anyone needs anyway. As for the HONESTY in what the stock bottom will take I have no idea, many claim never to have touched the stock bottom, and it could be true, but how long will one hold up to beyond 500/600 HP? I dunno. If you've never been in a 500 HP car though, my advice is take small jumps, 100-200 HP tops. If you are an older drive though, confident in your abilities, use your own judgement, but most people do not know the reality of doubling your horsepower or even more, a car becomes nearly undriveable very fast, until you get used to the power levels.

Thanks for the feedback Jim, I will try to keep my feet on the ground here. Yes, custom stuff will cost money, then coil overs, but the thing is strong and lightweight, and parts are readily available. It could be in some sense (probably) in the back of my head I'm dropping serious cash for one little part, instead of a bunch of big parts. Plus having a 5 lug wheel would be nice, but then I'm stuck with 4 lug fronts hmmm... I could however then get 17x9.5" or so rear 5 luggers which would be rockin.

I bought two N42s, one stock one ported (how much I dont know) with new valve guides, stock bronze seats for a couple hundred bucks. If you use a good shop, get a fully rebuilt head and go the full 9 yards though yes, $1400+ is the norm, there are some shops that charge $600ish but often work can be suspicious, or bad at worst to the point where the head needs to be trashed. I once spotted a set of LT1 heads from a supposed 5.0 race porting shop where they opened up the PORT FLOOR of the head, WTF was that? I actually question if the heads were honestly pro ported or home ported, because you do not open up the port floors on those heads or any V8 that I can think of. I more readily believe someone looked at a couple pictures of ported heads and went right to town, doing everything upside down LoL

Crankshaft / damper / flexplate question
Mudge replied to RPMS's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Also, modern SBC is one peice rear seal, alot of the older stuff is 2 peice. Some of them are going to be for internally balanced engines also, with neutral balanced parts. So, make sure you know the setup of your engine.
