  1. Ok; Carbs may be 'inferior' to FI performance wise.. BUT: Aftermarket ECU's/chips/ect, are hugely expencive and carbs are cheap. I'v actually moved on to another idea for carbs anyway, so this post is kind of redundant now..
  2. I had a VLSD in my 85 200sx and it was great. It was awsome for traction in the winter! Take off in first, one wheel spins for a sec, it would turn the car a bit, then both would kick in. Just had to be carefull which way the car was going at that point, cause when it got hook-up, it took off which ever way the nose was pointed!
  3. Hmm... maybe the MAP sensor? I've heard of a lot of GM's with similar problems caused by faulty map sensors...
  4. That was awsome! Cute chick too..
  5. Ok.. well, if I'm runing a stock 2.8L engine (rated for 170 Horse), how do I figure out how much airflow I'll need? Ie; what size of carb(s) do I need to get? I really need to do some more research on carbs, because I have no idea about jetting/airflow/ect. And I was thinking about the firing order too.. My Idea for the intake would be a simpler version of the FI intake: 6 'tubes' coming out of the head (bolted to the head with a flat plate.. sort of like a header), going into a piece of square tube. Then the carbs would be bolted on to the other side of the square tube. (I have access to a Tig welder at work so it will be all alluminum) From looking at pics of the original twin carb manifolds, I figure this would work. And before someone says something about that, I was thinking of getting a used manifold (260z I thnk) off ebay but the guy wanted big bucks (like $800+) for the manifold and two carbs. For that, I could fix my FI! Anyway... any more thoughts ppl?
  6. Dono if this has been asked, but I did a search and only came up with two hits... ? Got to thinking maybe 3 mikuni's from a sled would work on my 280z? I don't know much about carbs.. and dont know how to figure out if a particular set of 3 carbs will be.. 'enough' to run my engine? I just want to try this for the sake of trying. I can build an intake easy enough at work, and have access to a pile of snowmobile parts (through a friend) but don't know exactly what I'd need for carbs. I've seen a few posts saying 'mikuni 40' and so on.. what is that? The carb size? model? Sorry if I sound like an idiot here.. but.. I kinda am! If this doesnt work for me, I can always put the FI back on and fix that system ($$$ ) but I'd like to try this triple carb thing.. I'm thinking I could throw something like this together cheap, and without the hasle of ordering expensive sensors, and chasing electrical problems! Any of you guys have some ideas for me?
  7. Timing chain cover on the front of the engine may be holding the pan. Or it could just be old gasket/goop holding it.... maybe the dipstick tube?
  8. Check the AFM. There's a check list in my album. ( You just need a multimeter/tester. ) I'd start looking there first, assuming all your ignition wires/components are in good shape.
  9. I am using one of those right now to store/work on my Z. Mine is a 24'X12' similar to the first pic. Think I paid $379 new. Its alright for now, but the covering it came with is thin and probly won't last. It says it's good for the winter, but condensation builds up inside and creates a layer of thin ice all over the roof and sides. Then if it gets a bit warmer in there (like when Im working on the car, or when the sun comes out) it starts driping evrywhere inside. Also, the snow built up around it this past month and was pushing in on the sides. The metal rods were starting to bend a bit, so I had to dig it out on the weekend. It's been ok... but I'd rather have a 'real' garage to work in. As for storage / shed space, it's great and I'll probably keep mine around even after I have a Garage. I mean, a House with a garage..
  10. I dont think brake lines inside the car are against the law.. but don't take my word for it. Ask a cop maybe? I dono...
  11. Yah, that's cool.. I have a 93 Nissan King cab for a daily driver, and the 3.0L N/A pulls good... I can imagine with a turbo set up! I actually want to build (someday...) a pre 85' Nissan/Datsun pickup with a 300zx turbo engine and air bag suspension 'pssssttt... ' drag the frame on the ground and watch the sparks fly! Heh heh
  12. Hmm.. well, I friend of min is a ford mustang freak and from what he says, the 'world class' T5 is not really a better trans. His 5.0 had a W/C T-5 and it was awful (very abused mind you) but he did some research and found it was not a good trany for high power applications period. They tend to grenade themselves.
  13. Heck, if the wide body kit and wing is in good shape, you could make quite a bit of coin! I look forward to seeing the pics!
  14. Got a letter in the mail today from the Ministry of training that says I start my aprenticeship/training for General Machinist on April 5th! I have been working in a machine shop for about a year now, kind of 'marking time' waiting for a seat at a college. I figure it will work out pretty good in that respect, because I have a bit of knowlege/expiriance under my belt, so I'm not going in blind... Only thing is, it's over 2 hours away, and the course is two months long. Also means there will not much time to work on the Z until June It's too damn cold right now, and I cant do anything till the winter starts to go away.. like April sometime.. crap.. I hate winter... I was hoping to get this frigin' car going for this coming summer, but I dono now.. Thats kind of got me bummed out, but at least I'll be worth more $$ when I come back to work in June... More $$= MORE DATSUN PARTS!!! Heh heh...
  15. Um.. about the trans.. As far as I know, the T-5 is the same trany in a ford or a chev, but the input shaft is different. (length and splines) Why not just get a chev T-5 from a camaro/firebird? It would simplify things, and be cheaper IMO in the long run.
  16. "Shop smart... Shop S-MART!" Clasic... I love those movies.
  17. Shut up. If I had the money to get a plane ticket down there, I come and kick your... wait... think I'd join you for a beer!
  18. Did a quick search, but didn't come up with anything. Wondering if the brakes from a 90's 240sx would be considered an 'upgrade' for a 280z? I'm sure they are vented, which would be beter then my solid fronts, and didnt some 240's had rear disk's? See, I was thining of spliting the cost with a friend on a wrecked/rusted 240sx. She has an 88 RX7 with a blown rotary, but the rest of the car is mint. She loves the look of the car, and has over $3000 into it (new brakes, tires, ect) The 13B went 'POP' last summer, and she wanted to get it going again... but without the gas sucking/blowing up/SLOW motor. Anyhow, we got to talking about swaping in a basic 4 cyl engine to make the car an economical and reliable daily driver. It's an auto (which she wants to keep), and she doesnt race it.. just likes crusing around in it, so a nissan 2.4 would do it for her. As for me, I want some 240 seats for my Z, maybe the carpets, rear end/cv's, and was thinking I could use the brakes too. Anybody done this? I am not afraid of some fabricating work, just curious if anyone here has good or bad to say about 240sx brakes.
  19. OMFG!!! That was freakin hilarious!! Morons!! That's just like my buddys car.. Im gona show him that! Too bad really.. that car was in pretty good shape...
  20. I had a 200sx that leaked bad from the rear main.. I put in an aditive called Bardall (sp?) and ran heavy weight diesel oil (15W40) and the leak almost dissapeared. This was an 85' with 250 000 K on it, and they were NOT nice easy miles! I think what these additives do is thicken up the oil, making it harder to leak out. PS: as for the moron who screwed up your oil pan/gasket in the first place, you should make life bad for him any way you can. Tell everyone he is a drug dealer and he touches kids or someting... Idiots tlike that should not be near ppls cars with tools!
  21. I had a 280zx do that to me. Hard to start, spewed black smoke, missed all through the RPM range, ct. I sold it before I could figure it out, but the guy I sold it to found the problem 3 months later: A bad fuel injector. I did the same thing as you, and started replacing stuf, but didn't think of an injector. "doh!" Make sure to check the whole ignition system too, as a bad plug/wire can do similar things. If everything else checks out and is in proper order, I'd bet you have a bad/failing injector. Try taking all of the injectors out and getting them cleaned, or if you have the $$$, just replace them all. Hope this helps!
  22. Well, I need to get the camera working and take a pic tomorrow of what I saw tonite: Parked in the middle of a nicely plowed parking lot, there is a snow plow truck covered in two feet of snow and has been plowed in/around on all sides. This is a big international, with a huge blade on it. It's funny just to see in in this state, given the time of year.. but what really gets me is that this particular grocery store parking lot gets plowed by a guy in a ford 1/2 ton pickup that has a little bit of truck on the rust! The world is a strange place...
  23. Im not sure about the 4L FI motor, but my buddys 4.2 is a dog. Doesnt like to rev past 4000 at all. And even at that rpm (which is SCREAMING in his old YJ) it is pretty gutless. Lots of low end grunt though. He rebuilt his 4.2 last year, and can sqwak the rear tires (31X10.5) taking off, but still runs out of steam at about 4000.
