Anyone Running 18's???
tannji replied to TomsCoupe's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Talon is the camera car, correct? Sounded pretty cool, couldnt see much.... I hope that was the talon guy that said "Holy Crap!!...." lol good stuff. -
LS1 Z, do you have a link for that video of MAS280's car? I cant find it on this sight, would like to see it if possible... thanks, tannji
-
Who's car is that? It looks like a TPI motor like mine, I would like to talk to that owner... = ) Also, Someone mentioned MAS280's video lately... anyone know where to find it? I searched the forum, but no joy.

very pricey to get a T56 there, but not so bad to have them upgrade one you already own.... pricelist: http://www.gforcetransmissions.com/tran_t-56_price.asp I may look into this when everything else is "done".[/url]

for the tranny, check the mount and bushings, if there are any, been over a decade since I have looked. Also replace the bushings where the shifter attaches to the tranny. the rear sounds like either a bad mount, or bad joint in the drive shaft or drive axles.

I spent (over-spent, actually) $6000 on an already Hybridized 240Z, that I had never seen. Got scared on an Ebay auction, and made an offline deal to buy it at the reserve price..... Oh well, wanted back into the Z world bad, re-learned a buying lesson, lol. I planned on driving it 2000 miles back from the San Diego area, still unseen.... Got about 30 miles from the point of purchase, seemed to be running a little hot, and noticed I couldnt hear the E-fan running, which was manually wired and switched. Paid $50 at a "Latino" garage to replace a toggle switch.... but as I had no tools handy, and relieved at the stupid repair, so filed it away as a good deal. had a good conversation with the manager, who turned out to be a great guy, he was kinda impressed with the engine bay of the Z. Babied the Z, and sweated bullets for the first 300 miles or so, because my stressed and over-active imagination was convinced that the temp gauge was creeping upward. After 300 miles and some much needed sleep, I turned off the heater, and ran another 30 or so miles at 60mph... then 70.... finally decided to ignore the temp gauge my imagination was animating, and averaged 90mph and close to 30mpg the rest of the way. Fortunately for me.... the computer waited till after I was home for a few weeks to go. $300.... Then found the cause, 18 gauge speaker wire, run through a hole drilled in the chassis, was powering and grounding the fuel pump, sometimes simultaneously. Took out the computer when it shorted. Found some other relatively minor problems in the wiring, traced it and found an updated fuse box with new style fuses (sweet!) but no labels or diagram. (not sweet) I parked it and havent driven it since. Last week, finally got it to my new home, discovered that there was no brake fluid, except for the puddle on the ground, traced it to the general area of the MC. Now waiting to build a new garage, and put a new roof on the house. Looking for an LS1, T56, and a large portion of Ross Corrigan's inventory. Need rotisserie.... (want, actually.... one of those while I am at it things ) So that all adds up to about $15,000, and I still have to spend on tools including metal working stuff, including welding, and oh yeah..... some classes I found at the local CC for metal working and auto restoration. Oh, forgot the 1994 Toyota 4Runner to replace the Z as my daily driver, $6000.... I cant explain it, but somehow the girlfriend has been very accommodating, and even faintly enthusiastic. I try to repay her by watching the occasional Lifetime Movie Network movie, and with help in odd projects..... like raking up almost 500 pounds of leaves and acorns ealier today. (weighed a bag and averaged it out for 13 bags) We really need more squirrels around here..... The moral of the story is..... A WRX STI costs $30,000+, and I am having more fun this way. Or so I tell myself every time I see the Z sitting there. Anyone want a really nice TPI 350 and 700R tranny?

WOW. Looks great so far. I will have to print that and put it in the garage. Mine will be going on a rotisserie in a couple months, I can use some inspiration.....

just an update to an old thread.... I am about to break ground, budget, and my back but the new digs are on the way. got permission to sacrifice some of the backyard for the garage, will end up with about 900 square feet in a funky "L" shape. Also about to start shopping for equipment, like a plasma cutter and mig/tig. We are limited to 15 foot garages here, and there are slope requirements for the roof, so I dont get quite as much storage as I wanted, but I am still grateful.... Gotta have a retreat from 20-some kids we provide daycare to.

yeah, lets see some pics..... and perhaps some testing? -
any reason for not putting the engine up front with a harley or bmw style belt or shaft drive? seems like that would address weight ratios nicely, especially on the 6oocc or similarly weighted engines.

When I was a lot younger, I had several Z's that saw a lot of light-to-light racing, and the breaks were a big problem. MY sbc 240z did pretty well tho, and I ran good pads and new brake lines. My current car is getting Ross's kit, but mostly because I want it, not out of any great need. I do plan on hitting meets and gathers with it.... so a little mechanical bling is necessary. (just like the V8 in a 2 seater, in a 4 car family, right? LOL) Honestly, the biggest improvement I ever saw was eliminating the stock rubber lines going to the calipers. If I never work on a drum brake again, it will still be too soon for me, so you can see I kinda need that disk conversion, as well....

that red car looks Evil.... got any more pics of the hood? I really like everything about it, including the height.... but yeah, I wouldnt go that low either. I dont think I would be able to drive it anywhere in Iowa. -
Could not have happened to a nicer guy..... but what does it say about your company that they regularly do this kind of thing? Highly abnormal, if you ask me.... I wish I could have found such a strange employer.... Oh well, I did the next best thing 2 months ago, and quit my job. Now I work for myself out of the house. I still have some problems with my "employer", as my money comes from the state and government, but all in all it is a satisfactory arrangement. Now, a little more more money, a little less time "on the clock", and I would be ducky, but it's still better than most regular jobs I have had. If you believe in karma, you could use some of that off-time to make me some suspension parts..... 8) Enjoy the the time off, you must be doing something right, lol. tannji

Excellent! Ross, you are on your way to being an icon in this community and beyond.... the work you put into developing specialty parts is greatly appreciated. Mark me down as interested as well.... probably this winter, once I am done reconditioning my shell.
-
thanks, man..... appreciate that!

gotta link to pics or website for that guy? I was thinking on making the rotisserie.... but if someone makes a good one for $325... perhaps I just get it and add whatever features I need....
-
Anyone want to look at a couple of designs and give me some feedback, especially those who have either made their own, or have problems with the ones they used? I am thinking about making a rotisserie soon, and would like as much input as possible before I start it. I particularly like the adjustibility of this one, and it's tensioners. http://www.theroto2000.com/index.htm Nice look here too. http://www.carrellcustomwelding.com/autotwirlerplus.htm I think I want the under-car cross bar as well, makes sense to me. The hydrolic jacks are inexpensive. Thanks everyone!

LMAO... I wasnt going to say anything, but I am glad it wasnt just me.... -
true... but I have an even stranger sense.... I swear that the Z exhaust has its own auroma.... one that my sbc Z cant replicate. I have commented about it to others, and they give a strange look, but I have had several older types agree.....

I am not familiar with the engine, but I would look at the possibility of fabbing a hood with a slightly higher cowl.... 1 inch more there wouldnt be noticed by anyone other than a Z nut.... and many would miss it the first time around.... unless you had just embarrassed them on the street.... Next, I would look into a custom sump...., but my ignorance of the engine comes into play here, as I dont know how much of that sump is used for hardware, vs oil.... I had a vette cowl on one of my sbc Z's... and while that is a bit more obvious, many people had no clue it wasnt stock. I think I have even seen a custom (as in one-off, not aftermarket available) hood that was "massaged" to allow the extra room the owner wanted for his sleeper. Mine had the vette cowl, and bowtie centercaps on the wheels, and it was still rarely recognized for what it was.

good post, I wont even start on my feelings.... but great post.

LOL! ok, no prob... I used to play a lot of Unreal Tournament online.... (that is where I got the UT connection) and I knew a guy online who also played the game, and used that same Avatar, and also liked Z's.... so it was a peculiar coincidence, thats all.... Funny thing is, he had a lot of people convinced that he was that guy with the light saber
