ME AND MY EVIL TWIN ROAD ROAD RACING LS2 AND LS7 RX7'S (pics)
qwik240z replied to LS1 Z's topic in Non Tech Board
Yes. Road racing is a blast. Glad you are joining the ranks Joey. I am taking my LS1 240Z to Summit Point next month. It has been a year since i have been on the track so I can't wait. I know you will become addicted. An in car instructor is a huge help for beginners on a road race course. I am surprised they let you run solo at Thunderhill -
very tempting 16 x 7
qwik240z replied to ihatejoefitz's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I sent an email to Gabe at T3 (techno toy tuning) and it is no mistake. They are newly released 16" x 7", I asked how much they weigh and shipping to the east coast. here is his reply. In a message dated 10/20/2006 1:37:45 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, ggtyler@yahoo.com writes: The 16" wheels weigh just about 16lbs. Lighter than Panasport street wheels, but about 1/2 lb heavier than their race wheels. Shipping would be $60 back to you. Gia & Gabriel Tyler http://www.TechnoToyTuning.com This is great news. If they will fit over the MMS 13" big brkaes then a set of these will become my track wheels. The 16" Panasports barely clear my MMS brakes. -
No. I don't think so. As Dave said, I am in Maryland. I sold an airdam to a guy in your area and the guy decided to make a mold from it and produce them in Carbon Fiber. They were too expensive so I think he stopped making them. Maybe you met him?

Any time slips? What dd it run? Sounds sweet!

Shameless Plug. I sell the airdam pictured here. Contact me if you are interested.

I agree. I own 2 510's and a 240Z. I used to have a V8 510. The L28 swap into a 510 is too much work and weighs too much for the front of the 510. Major firewall mods. A VG30 is a better choice and is about the same HP as the stock L28. It is also a proven swap that has been done many times. The SR20DET is another great swap for a 510. A few guys are currently working on a VQ swap too. Dave Lum is working on a VQ35TT into a 510 right now. His is the car pictured earlier in this post. I understand that you have the L28 but that shouldn't be the motivating factor in a swap. I have tons of 510 parts if anyone is looking.

Come on David. Tell the truth. It really began when you took my LS1 240Z for a drive. Then the crankshaft pulley just gave you an excuse to justify the swap to your wife. You guys should have seen the grin on his face after driving my car. It stayed with him for hours. And this was after many laps in the passenger seat on the autocross track where he helped me improve my skills. David is a good autox coach. Glad I was able to corrupt you. hehe!

Mine is on the road too. Hit the road in August of 2005. Probably put 4000-5000 miles on it. It is better then I had hoped for. I love this car.

I did a search but didn't find the answers. I have run out of garage space (Z car in one garage and 510 in the other) and have been offered a space to store one of my other Datsuns (a 510) in a Pole Barn for the winter. I was looking into getting a Car Bag for it. http://www.carbag.com Has anyone used one of these? Opinions and comments are welcome.

I agree. The paper gaskets suck. Mine were replaced with copper and I haven't had any problems since.
-
I also didn't want to drill into the buckets. Any chance of seeing a closeup of the L brackets mounted? Thanks!

Are you planning on using the body instead of the one you have as a donor for the LS1 and selling yours? Unless you can afford to buy it and also have enough money to finish your current project, I would say pass on it. The $2000 will go a long way towards getting your LS1 project on the road. I once made the mistake of spending money that was earmarked for one of my projects on another "good Deal" that I didn't need. It set me way back on my project and I ended up selling the "good deal" for the same money I paid for it about 6 months later. Not such a good deal.

Really cool. I tried a run of ten and averaged 6.011. I want to try again when I am more awake. Fun stuff. Thanks for the links. -
Sergio, Congrats. I know you are enjoying the ride. The LS power in a Z is nothing short of incredible. You will absolutely love 3rd gear. Wait til you get into it. Can't wait to see the video. Welcome to the LS club!

Someone posted this on the 510 list. I thought I would post it here. Pretty amazing if it is for real. http://www.massmopar.com/Files/340save/photos/photo1.html

The Avalon is a car for your grandpa. I have an 06 Infiniti G35x as my daily driver. I love it. The car is sporty and comfortable. It has plenty of power to keep this LS1 240Z owner happy and the VQ35 motor loves to rev. 280HP in the RWD version and 270HP in the AWD. Even the automatic trans is decent. I like the manual mode. The exhaust sounds good too.The VQ really sings. The car handles pretty well. The bluetooth is great, the Bose stereo sounds awesome. It also has nice modern features. It has an A/C duct that provides A/C to the back seat area and the back seats reclines too. The power windows have one touch up and down for all 4 windows and the moonroof is one touch controlled too. The memory power seats are nice too. The keyless ignition is great. You can keep the key fob in your pocket and just get in and start the car. I also like the way you can open all of the windows with the remote to cool off a hot car before you get in. Infiniti is going to release the newly redesigned 07 model next month so they will be dealing on the 06 models. You can get one for a little more then the cost of the Maxima. How long do you plan to keep it? Maybe a lease would be a better option. You can lease one for about $400. a month. Maybe less now. Sure cuts the payment and you aren't tied to it for too long if you get tired of it. I tend to get tired of cars after a short time. I had a 2002 Maxima before the G35 and kept it for 4 years but I was ready for something different after 2 years. Stay with Nissan/Infiniti. You can't go wrong.

I have the JCI mounts in my car. I don't consider myself a professional mechanic. I consider myself a novice. That being said, I had absolutely no trouble installing the JCI mounts. I did read the manual several times before I started. I will agree that the manual could be more clear but the design of the mounts, especially the drivers side, is well thought out and is much stonger then the original Z mount. The design incorporates a plate that goes in between the frame rail and the crossmember that covers the original Z motor mount tower and adds addional strength to it. Then the JCI mount slides inside the original Z motor mount tower. The 2 pieces sandwich the original Z mount and make it twice as strong. The way it ties into the T/C rod housing adds even more strength. The only grinding I had to do on the drivers side was to grind off a little piece of metal on the t/c housing. My mount was able to slide right into place with no hammering. Everything lined up perfectly and bolted up fine. On the passenger side, I did have to grind off a boss on the block as mentioned earlier in this post. I did have some trouble getting the bolt through the motor mount on the passenger side but after a few trys I decided to put the passenger side bolt in first and then I got the drivers side in witout too much trouble. I Have put over 5000 miles on my car since the swap, including several track days, autocrosses and 1000 mile road trips. I still highly recommend the JCI mounts. They are stong, well designed and they place the motor in the right position for the trans shifter to come out in the stock location. Sure you may be able to design and build your own but there is so much else to do on this swap and the JCI mounts only cost $300. If you are doing an LS1 swap then you know this is not a budget swap. $300 is a fair price for these. The time savings alone are more then worth it. If you want to get your car off the jackstands and on the road sooner, the JCI mounts are the way to go. MAS280 built his own mounts for his 240Z LS1 swap but when he built the 280Z LS1 for ULISES, he used the JCI mounts. Vinh switched from home made motor mounts to JCI. I have been enjoying my LS1 240Z for over a year now and I must say that this is one great swap. I really love 3rd gear. It pulls so nice. Nothing like blasting from 50 to 110 in 4-5 seconds. The power to weight ratio is awesome. Quit knocking the JCI stuff and get your LS1 Z cars on the road. When it is all done you won't even see the motor mounts in the car. Do you see them in this picture?

This guy was Peter Geoffrey Brock of Austrailia, the race car driver. Not Pete Brock of the BRE Datsun fame. Still a sad loss to motorsports. Glad to hear the other pete brock is still with us

Got my LS1 running for real
qwik240z replied to VinhZXT's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Congrats! Another LS1 Z on the east Coast. I know you will love it. -
And to think, all it took was one drive in my Z for you to do it. Sounds like you had a great time. I bet the owners of the cars you passed were pissed off to see an old 240Z blowing by them at 144mph. SWEEEEEEEET!

Mine weighed 2550 before I did the brake and diff upgrade and added A/C. I bet it is around 2650-2700 now. I will get it weighed soon. I would think if I had wanted to strip it down for the track, I could have shaved 200-250 pounds or so. Mike Kelly is building a track car and he is considering an LSx motor. Maybe he can get it down to 2200-2300# What do you think Mike?

lookin good David. Really sounds great.

Had one in my old 510 too. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/520667 Not much on power but lightweight for a Z. Will lighten the Z a good bit. Old HP ratings were 185 HP for the 1963 Buick/Olds 215. Decent torque too. I wouldn't use it again as I think the SR20 is a better choice now.
