  1. Thought some of you might like to see this one. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4534370454&category=6187
  2. Congrats! Is connor going to get the LS1 280Z for his 16th B-Day? Since someone mentioned all the money you will be spending on your new grandson, I have seen some nice 280ZX bodied go karts on eBay from time to time. Get him started early.
  3. I am installing an LS1 in my 240Z and the motor I bought came with an auto. I actually had the motor and trans in the car but I always liked to shift a car and I had talked myself into believing I would be happy with the auto. Well time kept passing and I couldn't get over the thoughts of "a real sports car must be a stick shift. So I bought a T56 six speed. I just know I wouldn't be happy with the auto. My daily driver (2002 MAxima SE) is an auto and quite boring. Joey LS1Z did the LS1/auto and when his auto blew up he went to the six speed too. He say there is a world of difference and he is so much more happy with the six speed. Just my opinion but I'll take mine with a six speed.
  4. Freakin Awsome! That Mustang looked like it was parked. The 60ft times must be 1 sec. Any 1/4 mile times yet?
  5. See what I mean. I seriously spent 2 hours going through post and didn't even find that one. It really doesn't answer my questions though. To amny people go,in different directions in the thread. Please post your stuff here. Thanks.
  6. I just spent the last 2 hours reading through the many posts (hundreds) about brake upgrades I found in the search for "Brake Upgrades" There has got to be a better way to consolidate all this info for the new guy that wants to figure out which setup will be best for them. I am trying to decide on a brake setup for my car and I am more confused now then before. It seems that there are 3 major vendors selling brake upgrade kits or components as well as others making certain parts to combine with OEM stuff. Ross at Modern Motorsports, Juan at JSK and Arizona Z Cars are the 3 majors ones I have read about. Modern Motorsports offer many different upgrades from their Toyota 4X4 front brake upgrade and 240SX rear upgrade to the extreme13" front and rear upgrade and also the 13" Cobra Upgrade. They seem to offer parts or complete packages. JSK seems to make components to work with the Wilwood calipers, etc. Arizona Z cars offers complete Racing Brake packages based on the Wilwood Calipers. (forgive me if I left out anything anyone provides, it was not intentional. I am just on overload of brake info right now) All vary in price greatly. In my case, price is not the biggest concern. It is more important to me do it right the 1st time and to get a brake upgrade that will work for my intended uses of my car and provide years of reliable service. I want enough brakes to use the car as a weekend cruiser but be able to stop me without fading if I do a few track days per year and a few autocrosses too. I don't want to over spend for my brakes but I understand that too much brakes will only hurt me in the wallet. I was trying to get real world opinions on the different setups. It seems that some of you are running the Toyota 4X4 fronts with stock rears, some have the Toyota 4X4 Vented calipers with the 300Zx rotors and spacers, Some are running the vented 4x4 with the 240Sx rear discs., some the Arizona Z car wilwood setup, some the MM extreme setup in front with the 240SX rear, etc. I am sure some of the combos that are being used will work for my intended uses as well as other on the list and future list members as well. It would be helpful if list members with completed brake upgrades in running cars would post their setups and opinions and feedback as to how well they work so we can have all this info in one area that will be easliy accessable for all to find. If you are willing to help out and post your brake setup, please let us know the following: Year of Car Front brake mods (rotors, calipers, spacers, etc.) Rear Brake mods (rotors, calipers, spacers, etc.) Type of pads front Type of pads or shoes rear A short opinion of how they stop compared to stock. Please only post if you have completed the brake upgrades and you car is on the road and has had at least 1000 miles of use or at least one track day since completed. I know there are many more variables to deal with but I feel that the basic info should be enough for most people to make a more infomed decision. Please don't hyjack this thread. Thanks in advance for the help.
  7. Pete, After our day cruise in your Z to Mike Kellys a few months ago, I think you should donate the Z to charity. (Just kidding) Actually I tend to drive like you. WOT as much as possible. Just can't seem to quench the need for speed! I will be happy to join you at Summit Point for the track days. They only charge $180 for the day. I would rather give it to them instead of the State of Maryland. If I get my car on the road soon enough, I would love a day at the Point before we tackle Watkins Glen at the Z convention. I haven't been on a racetrack since March of 2004 (1 year ago. Time flies) and I really need to get used to the LS1 before I go crazy on an unfamiliar track.
  8. Good Luck getting Baby back!
  9. Lots of discussion have taken place as to how the setback will affect the handling. The general opinions seems to be that there is little to no difference in handling when you are talking about 1"-2" . Both methods put the motor behind the front of the strut towers. As for the alternator do a search under MAS280. He made his own bracket and mounted the alt. on the passenger side up high with the alt facing forward as it was originally. You can see pics of mine here. Check out both links: http://www.cardomain.com/id/qwik240z http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=3083&ppuser=4628 Good Luck!
  10. There are several factors that will decide the motor placement. If you go with the JCI (Johns Cars, Inc.) components you will not have a choice on motor location, The mounts provided place the motor in the proper location based on his stuff. Using these components, you will be able to retain the stock location for the alternator. As for the transmission you will need to remove the stock mounting ears from your trans tunnel and you will also need to massage (big Hammer) the tunnel in a few spots to get it to fit. I used this stuff and I have the motor and trans bolted in the car now. I plan to switch to a T56 6 speed so I will be pulling it all out (again) to install the 6 speed. If you decide to make your own mounts then you get to decide where you place it and are limited by firewall, oilpan, steering and header clearances. If you wait until JTR starts selling the mounts that Mike (MAS280) designed then again you won't have a choice in placement. This will place the motor a little farther back towards the firewall but you will need to relocate the alternator as it will not clear in the stock location. I am sure I am forgetting some of the other stuff too. All depends on how handy you are and/or how big your budget is. I went with the JCI stuff as it is alot easier and pretty much a bolt in job. Not to mention the design is 1st rate and the quality of the stuff is 2nd to none. One of the things I really like about the JCI stuff is that it doesn't rely only on the stock motor mount towers alone for strength. It includes reinforcements for the motor mount towers to strengthen this area. Good Luck!
  11. I'm doing the swap too. And JCI (John's Cars Inc.) is in Dallas. Phantom is in Dallas area with a LS1 Z completed and daily driver for a couple of years now. I have a donor car for you but I am in the Washington, DC are. See it here: http://www.cardomain.com/id/eastcoast240z and more info here: http://www.cardomain.com/id/eastcoast240zp2 Lots of good info on this site. Check out all the post by the guys listed and I am sure you will have more than enough reading to keep you busy for a while.
  12. Does this mean an LS1 will be residing in your Z's engine bay?
  13. Check out these guys for Northstar build info: http://www.chrfab.com
  14. Interesting motor. I found this on Google. Has engine weights, etc. http://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/engineweights.html It listed: Olds DOHC 4.0 V8 463lbs (dressed) Olds variant of Cad Northstar Also check out: http://www.c2e.biz/modernolds/phpBB2/portal.php and also: http://www.carguidemagazine.com/archive/apr2000/roadTests/aurora.php I have a 215CI Olds All aluminum V8 in my 510. Good little motor.
  15. Just got my T56. Any tips from those of you that have installed one in an 1970-1978 Z car? Any shifter recommendations? Thanks!
  16. Nice Car. You do know it's a 260Z not a 240Z, right? I like the bowtie on the grill!
  17. The Dodge Viper uses a T56 and it is over 500HP. Also the Mustang Cobra has a T-56 and it is over 400HP so maybe some of the T56's are stronger than others. If you beat on them too hard I am sure that even those that are rated for the higher HP and torque will break. I will be using the T56 in my 240Z with a stock (for now) LS1 so I don't see any real problems unless I really bang alot of gears too hard. But I really don't drive that way and I plan to keep my R180 LSD rear so I will be extra careful.
  18. Me too! I can't believe I never saw this post have missed it when I searched the archives. Great info!
  19. Hey. Stop building that 383. Get in touch with Mike Kelly. (he is a list administrator) He has a newly built 383 for sale. If he sells it, he can install his LS1 in his Z instead.
  20. Oh Come on Mike. That's nothing that a dozen roses and an nice romantic dinner out won't take care of. I met your wife. She is really cool. She will dig the Z with the LS1. Just let her know that you need to bring the Z into the 21st century. You can remind her of what my Mother-in Law told my wife about my cars. "Men need toys. If they don't have toys, they have mistresses. You choose!" My Mother-in Law is cool, too.
  21. They have different torque ratings and also different spline counts. The 6 cyl. T5 is only rated at like 200 ft pound of torque. The V8 unit was like 300 but the world class came out in 88 and was like 350 IIRC.
  22. Sell it Mike! You might take a small loss but you will be much happier in the end. You already know how great the LS1 is. You Z would be great with one. Not to mention that I would love to have another LS1 Z car close by.
  23. Mark, Congrats on getting it to fire up. When do we see some pics? jonzer12, I bought a custom harness from speartech and it looks great. They do excellent work.
