  1. Yeah, that was a re-hash of the Duntov theory of cams for gm heads. The heads didn't have alot of flow at higher valve lifts, so the basis for design is alot of duration to get area under the valve lift curve. Flat tappet designs are acceleration limited unlike hydraulic rollers, but todays designs make more power. Yup, it's outdated and as I said, not much of a cam. I typically cam even larger than that, I think people tend to be too conservative in cam selection IMO.
  2. IMO K&N and Mobil 1 are the best, however expensive. Wix, baldwin and purolator are mainly what is available and I use regularly.
  3. It was just an example of a TTv8 car that's faster. The RB's sound oh, so good!
  4. Took the little alky 357 apart yesterday. Totally pristine condition inside except for 5 pistons, the Dart little M block looks great, what a piece of art those are. The 13:1 JE pistons are bye bye for now, going to build 9:1 compression, probably have to bore to .040 over, going with a bullet custom hyd roller cam, rework the afr 220 heads and install titanium retainers to remove some of the valve train weight. Rebalance and it'll be ready to go. Should be ready to assemble in a couple of weeks. When I loaned the engine out we installed it with just an HEI, where I ran a msd7 series with a 7400 rpm rev limiting chip. He has a memory tach and before he took the engine for a swim it was taching 8200rpm according to the mem in the tach. So, the exhaust valves where kissing the pistons on 5 holes. Valves look ok, we'll see how it comes out. I think I'll replace the valves, cheap insurance. I have a buddy that does aluminum fab, awesome tig welding. He's going to make me some aluminum wheel tubs. He has a plasma cutter too so that'll be helpfull cutting out the old wheel wells.
  5. I agree, that article doesn't take into consideration how light the z really is. 220 to 230 at .050 lift isn't that much of a cam. Kind of like the 350/350 "151" cam from GM which is 224 duration at .050 and .447 lift on a 112 LSA IIRC. These days you can get alot more lift with that duration and subsequently alot more power. Tighter LSA will fill the cylinders better IMO and make more early torque and a more usable powerband on the street.
  6. Happy B-day! And here is your new window sticker! :lmao: :lmao:
  7. No, and no. NOS is not something you'd want to breathe on a regular basis, well maybe, I don't know how you view that. But A/W intercoolers are typically inside the car not under the hood so no that wouldn't be a good idea and it ain't legal to spray nos inside the car with any sanctioning body except Cheech and Chongs racing series. Couple of hours, no, that won't work, you'll probably never get good tune to cover the wide range of water temps in the air/water intercooler to be at peak performance. Question, with A/A intercoolers making 1000rwhp +, why do you want A/W?
  8. Heat rejection is Q=Cp*(T2-T1) Since they are almost all aluminum the Cp stays the same which is the coefficient of heat transfer. The difference you will see is the Temp difference since water can have a bigger drop, ie. ambient to rougly 32 to 40 degrees using ice water. Water also transfers heat abou 25 times faste than air at the interface. IMO people use water to air in really high hp turbo applications and not so much for street use as the closed system will heat up the water to intake charge temps eventually.
  9. Here is the shop layout, going to be about 26' x 35' with a 20 foot apron in front. Going to put a 24" square footing with 2 #5 rebars in the bottom and a 6" slab with remesh only utilizing 3000 psi concrete. Uprights are going to be 5 - 1/5" oil field casing and cross beams are going to be 3" pipe. Got the test results back on the concrete and all three samples broke above 3000 psi at 72 hours so the 28 day strength should be around 3700psi. Pleanty good. Ordered the 2 post clear floor lift today. $1640 delivered, man they are getting cheap! I decided to pour a footer around the shop and then use weld plates with anchor bolts welded to the bottom for beam placement. Then I can weld the pipe to the plates and get them straight and all the same height. Going to have a single pitched roof sloping to the back of the shop. Once the lift gets here I'll pour the slab so I can have the mount plates for the lift ready to install when I pour.

    How are you these days?
  11. Make no mistake about it the "Corporate Theme" is to stomp out competition. Do it better and make more profit than anyone else, which is why most have shipped manufacturing over to third world countries to take advantage of low or non existant taxes and cheap labor. Granted small companies are or seem to be content with just carving out their niche and leaving it at that, but most people that head a company want it to grow and be more successfull. IMO that doesn't always jive with the engineers oath 1. Public safety and welfare. I've always had a problem with that. Take some of our members for example, good little small businesses, probably not expanding to the world market like Boyd Coddington, edelbrock, weiand, etc. They just do what they do, maybe something new here and there, and make a living. At least that's what I do, so that gets me work, enough to get by. I'm happy with that work aspect. Yeah, sometimes I'd like more, but more is not what life is about. I would rather have people like me for who and what I am, my generosity, kindness, knowledge and friendship rather than how much money I make or how big my company is. That doesn't make me a good CEO IMO but it doesn't make me a bad one either! That is what makes hybridz such a great place. We have a great CEO. Take a look at the many varied talents from fabrication, engine building, transmissions, rear ends, to electrical, fuel, megasquirt, etc, etc. All available at the stroke of the keyboard and in some cases they will come and help you if your in the area whether they have money, power, social standing or not. It's for the love of a shared interest and genuine caring. If you take the time to meet the members you will be rewarded. I was rewarded going to sez (dni) and getting to meet some really great people (too many to list) and I have been rewarded meeting the owner as well as several members in California and colorado. Truly amazing! Imagine what it would be like to meet the heads of the companies that are getting bad mouthed, you might find that they are just the same as you and I are, might even like z cars and even more. Take the opportunity and ponder the possibility of meeting the CEO before you dislike them. Just my opinion though, take it for what you want.
  12. Yup, company decisions are made by a-holes. I'm a self described A-hole and I own my own company, actually two of them. I'm sure Mike kelly is working diligently on a policy to deal with irate customers. Mine is already in place.
  13. It's very, very impressive no doubt, but don't blow it out of proportion. Not trying to take anything away from a truly awesome car that hauls the mail and gets it delivered in impressive fashion. It's faster than that particular twin turbo V8 car. There are TT V8 cars that are faster and don't have the aerodynamics of a z. One example is Chris chow here in the states holds the world record in his class at 7.97 at over 170mph in a stock body, stock suspension Grand National with a TT V8.
  14. Here I have the same type of situation, but different circumstances. My womans daughter went and filled up with gas at a local station. Seemed the bulk plant in Alb. had put diesel in the gas storage by mistake. So the gas station got diesel delivered into their gas tanks by the delivery driver. So, her car started and drove about 20 feet before dying right in front of the store. The problem was widespread and a number of stations were affected. It was on the local news and in the Sunday paper today. So, now what to do, the bulk plant is suppose to fix the cars, but they want them delivered to Brad Francis dealership in Los Lunas. So the dilemma continues, they are willing to; drain the tank, flush the lines and injectors, replace fuel filter and put some gas back in the car. That's it. Well, what about the full tank of diesel that she paid for? What about towing to the dealership, loaner car, etc. etc, etc. We'll see how that pans out but it ain't looking good. She'll probably be out the full tank of fuel, I'll probably have to tow the car on my car hauler to the dealership, etc. Oh, and now that the car has been sitting there in a parking spot in front of the gas station, someone knocked off her passenger rear view mirror. It never ends, but the tech person switching valves at the bulk plant is not who I'm looking for to make this right!
  15. Well, you did not provide enough information to even try to help you IMO.
  16. I disagree 100%, holding the tech responsible isn't the answer. As an employer I am responsible for my employees actions. What happens between my employees and myself is my business. But as a business owner, I would have to fix the problem then deal with the employee. IMO you can't say the employee has to be held accountable, as he was "circuit city", he wore the shirt that said so and was at all times representing "circuit city", as such, "circuit city" is responsible since the company is a collective whole, not an army of one individual that made a mistake. Edit: Someone has to take responsibility, and in this case that isn't happening.
  17. Very nice test and nice fabrication work.
  18. Oh crap, that's right I forgot you had the l-98. I got lost when you said qjet carb, and not the efi. I was standing in bryans shop and actually looked at the motor. Sorry. If your running carb then you can go with a bigger grind, something in the 220 to 230 range on duration at .050. With a 112 lobe center won't idle too bad. Probably around .500 to .530 lift IMO.
  19. Man that sucks. . . . . . . . Buy a porche.
  20. IMO for your combination if you want to have a little lopey sound and some good power, I'd run isky hydraulic flat tappet grind 201271. It pulls pretty good from about 2K up to about 6K in a 350.
  21. I'm not suprised at the police responses. Later on in life you learn, as I have, to say, screw it, and move on, it's really not worth all the aggravation dealing with moronic ex-inlaws or just stupid ignorant people in general. Find her a z and be on the road to happier times.
  22. None of the sanctioning bodies that I'm aware of, allow grinding of the welds. On the door bar that you started how are you going to weld the underside of those joints and the portion next to the lower door jam?
  23. I've seen it before, IMO the aluminum grows faster and that alone is enough to break the locktite bond.
