  1. The 400's have shorter rod bolts and less stiffness inbetween the rod bolt and the beam. I've seen 'em turn 7K all day in circle track cars using good bolts and rod prep, and my buddy ran stock rods and bolts in his mud bogger. They just didn't last very long. Notice I didn't say all season and I did say all day. If you want it to run longer than one day, you'd better upgrade to 5.7 rods with bolts if you want to stay oem. Better yet, it's been said over and over again, cheap insurance is a set of eagle H beams for $350!!!! Of course you have to rebalance the rotating assembly.
  2. They are all wrong!!! The car is unfixable, basically a worthless pile of datsun junk. Being that and all, give it to me as a token of appreciation for all that I/we do and the fact that the z is still in paint prison. Yes, I have a mouse in my pocket and he talks to me in Mouse v1.109, which I have translated online. Basically he says "cheese", but now there are so many different types of cheese it's hard to distinguish.
  3. With regard to idle screw, definately, they are the same. You should be adjusting idle speed with the secondary butterflies not the primaries, that's a common mistake made with cams such as yours and later model holley carbs. It's possible to uncover the transfer slot and have poor idle and low vacuum if the butterflies are open too much on the primary side.
  4. The trans won't work, if it's for a 4wd, so scrap that idea, however it is valuable for a 4x4 rebuild core. If your going to take the heads off and replace the cam, might as well freshen the bottom end as well, new bearings. If the bores are good (not likely), then rebore and install some new KB hypers and new rings. If you don't twist it higher than 4500 rpm you'll be fine otherwise opt for installing ARP rod bolts as a minimum in the stock rods and get them resized on the big ends. Doesn't take a "big" cam to work in a 400. Isky has a nice little 270 mega hydraulic. Works with stock converter, makes good low and mid in a 400. Make sure you get the right valve springs, have the heads set up right too. Top that with a nice little dual plane intake, HEI and you'll be cookin' in no time.
  5. We took house of Kolor paint books to SEZ and my boy picked out the color he wanted it to be The exact words of the body man were "I can paint that car in one week" "Drop it off now and I'll have it ready for you by next weekend". He just didn't say what year I guess!!!!!.............................
  6. No hangover, went to go watch my boy play in a Basketball tournament. They got 2nd, so it was good. Now going to wrench on the '33 dodge. I think I found some laser cut header flanges for $34 plus shipping on EBAY. Supposed to be for 2.250 exhaust tubes, so if that is correct, I'll make some zoomies. If I had pictures of Randi, the other fishing partner, we'd be set. She's a stripper from Houston, lives 2 blocks from G.W. Bush. Simply HOOOOTTTTT! I won't get into how I know her or met her, that's a whole nother story.
  7. 5/8" socket, six point, 6 inch extension if the lower crank pulley is on, big breaker bar, 7/16" socket, long extension and ratchet, 9/16" box end wrench. That'll get the valve covers off, heads off and turn the crank. Plastiguage is a thread of material, not an actual guage. You put a piece of it across the journals and torque the cap back, either rod or main, then take it back off, compare the smashed thickness to the chart on the wrapping. They make it for checking different clearances, .0005 to .003 is what your looking for.
  8. BRAAP is an authority on "Nasty" headwork. PM him.
  9. A tee will be fine. Or, you could do crankcase evac system into the exhaust and just run PB off the carb.
  10. The difference between a 400 and a 350 is amazing, even in stock form. Add alittle bumpstick and some decent heads and you'll really be amazed.
  11. I could go to sez 8 without a z. But that would defeat the purpose. If I end up shooting the paint guy, it wasn't my fault, he made me do it.
  12. I had something similar, only it didn't include my nutts. Pain in my right hip, drove me focking nuts for 2 weeks until I couldn't stand it anymore. Doctors didn't have a clue. Finally a nurse said, "Blood Test"!!! Staff infection, 2 weeks of antibiotics and all was better.
  13. You know this is the second time the same person has revived years old posts. Seriously, do you have a problem reading, if not, then pick topics that haven't yet been resolved.
  14. I thought I was going there to meet hot chicks with big sweater muffins?
  15. Thanks guys, coming from you all it really means alot. As for cars, I wish, Cozy's MoJo is still working, been snowing all day. Been blading roads, got another job for next week and one for the week after that. I have the Monte on the trailer, ready to take it to another shop to get my trans leak fixed I hope. Then I can bring it home and start a fire in my wood stove and spend all day/night getting it up and going. I can hardly wait! That and fab a set of headers for the 509, bought some laser cut header flanges today, so this will be my first header experience. Oh, and I have to go to CA real soon to pick up a z and hang with Cozy for a couple of weeks, er, days, er, well, we will see.
  16. Double double? Like if you say it twice in 30 minutes it's better? Your funny!
  17. Is there some odd reason your resurrecting a 3 year old thread?
  18. Any time you put an auto trans in two gears at the same time, it's going to be hard on the trans and converter since it keeps it at stall speed for a few seconds. If you use one try to stall it for the shortest time possible before releasing. Sometimes you see guys up on the stall or 2 step as soon as they stage and before the tree falls, which is not a good idea if you want it to last. The driveline is not loaded like in footbraking. I run the transbrake and the launch on footbrake gives me better 60' times and launches harder, which is probably due to converter design. I can cut a better light on the transbrake since it requires less movement.
  19. I'm using the B&B 7 quart drag pan. I also have a canton 8 quart drag that is similar in style to the B&B but clearanced for a 4 inch stroke crank. Hmmm, maybe something is in the works.
  20. Maybe not, but we have his credit card #, phone #, address, DL #, social security #, a phone tap, his mom and dads address, phone, etc, etc, etc.
  21. Interestingly enough Aries Duntov (sp?) had the same idea. The 30/30 solid lift z28 grind was such a cam. Alot of duration but not alot of lift. What he was doing was getting more top end from heads that didn'tflow alot of air at high lift numbers. Similarly, I do the same as some heads don't flow well at high valve lift numbers, ie. sportsman II heads. So, run .525 lift and up the duration. If I were to have a daily driver I'd keep the lift under .550 or so to minimize valve guide wear.
  22. Ol' SuperDan knows a good contractor! In fact, he's probably about to send him to a different state to work! At least that is after he finishes what he started at Dans house!!!
  23. Oh, the reason I said that is this mechanic I used to know, not you. He thought he was the bomb... He looked like ronald McDonald since he had a natural red 'fro and his first name was Ron! He put a .550 lift solid cam in a sbc with stock rods, cast crank, 14:1 Manley pistons and stock 882 casting heads. Yup, even still had the exhaust rotators on and stock springs (shimmed of course for more seat pressure). Now anyone who knows chevy's knows that the guides will hit stock retainers nearing .500 lift or so depending on the head. So, he started it and the cam was so lumpy you couldn't tell what was a miss or what. We were all standing around watching it run and I thought it sounded like crap and mentioned that I thought something was wrong. He said it's "just the cam". After about 30 minutes it finally pushed a valve through the retainer and after the piston got tired of slapping the valve closed it broke off, got sideways in the cylinder, cracked the cylinder and shoved the valve through the head, and bent a rod. When he pulled the dipstick, antifreeze ran out and he started crying (literally). The rest of us just left him alone. He quit the next day. That's why I said "Imagine". I can "Imagine" that motor you describe screaming in pain with the NOS before it let go.
