  1. My personal choice is a light engine. I love my little straight six wonder. I wanted a z 'cause my mom had one, and I wanted a turbo for one reason; you're all going to laugh, but I wanted the blowoff valve sound. I found out in my research at zcar that the turbo would also allow me some great power with the turn of a dial, so I drove from 23 of the way north into washington to grant's pass, oregon, a biatch of a drive btw, to pick up my car. I drove that far because I couldn't find a z with t tops that could play that sound to me any closer than southern oregon. I think that low weight would be best; i seem to recall the z's won some award for racing at some point...
  2. Who the hell would steal the stock radio? I'll post some pics of stuff I've done when I get home to my car, but; I have a voltmeter in the place of the passegner side cig lighter I have a rectangular a/f ratio gauge where the ashtray is I have switches mounted under my steering wheel
  3. Waiting for an install pic, I think i'm going to do this and follow Yorgee's method, If i remember right, a 280zx panel is a pretty unbent one.
  4. man here in wa, small block chevy's are a dime a dozen when you don't need them, I got a whole van with a running 305 and auto tranny for $300
  5. ^not to you guys, to my friends who are always trying to compete with each other
  6. it's mainly to say 'look what i did you f*ckers' and because i'm on this big fiberglass hitch right now. i am also thinking about better insulation inside the engine bay to slow heatsoak before the ic
  7. nothin? damnit i was really excited about this, lol
  8. I'm playing with making fiberglass turbo piping and intake piping... Any problems that people forsee other than the ROYAL pain the the ass it's been to make an almost suitable mold?
  9. I'd listen to Z ya, he and Braap are the ♥♥♥♥ (in a good way guys, lol) when it comes to heads. That's not downsayin anything about anyone else, just that everytime i've asked either one a question on l28s they've come through for me. Might try pming Tony D too.
  10. I've been meaning to tell you guinea, I appreciate how much work you've done on your ride, you did what a lot of guys said you wouldn't ever do. Also, by comparison, a turbocharger wouldn't be that much more work, would it?
  11. my dad's 67 chevy c10 does the same thing, but without the backfire, thank god Tony, where would the idle circuit be?
  12. I understand quite well that an L4 is not in fact a 6 cylinder engine, however it's so close to an L6 that I thought I'd ask here. I just bought a 77 620 pickup, and it kinda tries to keep running after I shut it off. It kinda sputters, rocks the engine around a lot, and at the end of this it usually backfires. I'm wondering, how do I fix this? Is it a tuning issue? Is it still getting power from the alt?
  13. Dayumn, that's a perty sweet setup man, I just bought a 77 datsun pickup for my daily driver while I do some major stuff to my Z, (seats, manual swap, and fiber dash) And you gave me some great ideas, I didn't have any idea how simply it is to put a little touchscreen in my car, since I'm doing a custom dash anyhow. However, the wood is a new idea to me, I would have never thought of that, or worse, thought of it after I made a crappy looking dash. what kind of fabric did you use for the base under the fiberglass?
  14. if you want the order my upgrades went; New injectors (bad choice) 76 intake manifold (looks cooler) New front tokikos (shocks) Polyurathane bushings Boost controller (doesn't apply to you) Megasquirt (very worthwhile, but not for a daily driver) Then I lifted my rear passenger side interior panel and found a hole, the size of my spare tire, under my spare tire. This just got fixed with some napa rust killer, rubberizer, and fiberglass. Then I relocated my battery to the back (just for fun) Dude, basically, just go get it tuned and drive it. johnc is right, go do the "new car thing", and everyone here knows what i'm talking about. Go buy new plugs, and gap them right. new fuel and oil filters, change the oil, and go get her tuned up. you'll notice a huge difference. Also, don't be shy about just reading through archives, we've all done a lot to our cars and we're all more than happy to tell you how to do it.
  15. Stock l28et. lol Also, megasquirt is giving the right number, my vaccuum gauge is broken autometer wants to send me another one. thanks for the help guys!
  16. Any comments on my conversion idea?
  17. IDEA! K, get this; my gauge reads Inches Hg on the vaccuum side, and psi on the boost side. Say it's broken, say it's actually just reading psi on both sides. It's possible i suppose... anyways If that's the case, and it's actually reading 9 psi and showing 9 psi, there are 2.036 inches of mercury in 1 psi. that means 9 psi is about 18.32 inches of mercury, which computes to 62 kpa. ambient (100 kpa) pressure - 62 kpa vaccuum = 38 kpa, my average kpa value for pressure at idle. any takers? anyone buying this, or am i off my rocker?
  18. I got kinda confused with whether the gauge meant ambient minus 9 hg, or just 9 hg, so i plugged my lappie in and got a reading of 35-43 kpa at idle, at 1500 rpm. My rpm is so high because when i put it into drive it drops down to about 900, where it will die if it goes much lower. not sure if it dies because the auto pulls it down so far or because it's tuned poorly, so i'm going to try and play with that this weekend too. however, i'm kinda concerned with my gauge reading, because you say 12-20 depending, and that stock is something like 35. if that's correct, i need to better understand the reading of my little gauge, because my understanding is taht kpa is in absolute value, ie, 100 = ambient, then any vaccuum is under 100, and boost is over 100, give or take a couple kpa due to alt and temp. that is, 1 atm is equal to ~14.7 psi, so i would assume that a 10 psi vaccuum would mean it's actually at 4.7 psi, or ambient-10. I don't however know the conversion setup for inches hg to kpa. Tony, do you think that there is an issue with my kpa being 35, and if so, it's strictly a tuning issue?
  19. yeah, dc'd my dash right before it happened... damnit, i guess it's out with the dash again. forgot about that one, sorry guys
  20. Anyone know what the resistance output on the 81 280zx turbo's fuel sender is?
  21. mine idles at 4.5 pounds vaccuum... lol All my custom powdercoating, Msns-e's CLT has been replaced with a wire to short it out for now, and I just repaired a rust hole under the spare tire using rust killer, rubber, and fiberglass
  22. 20 psi converts to 40.72 inches of mercury... this is a big problem, is it not?
  23. What would be a good clutch for my application? max of 250 rwhp streetable l28et 81 280turbo 5 speed swapping in soon and i need to start collecting parts
