jerzee
Long story short... Looking for opinions on what to do with a P30 engine that was recently rebuilt but discovered to have a cracked block. I am replacing the engine with F54 from '83zx with SU's. Before I trash the whole 240 engine i was wondering if there was any reason to keep or use any internals from the P30 block or E88 head? The PO said it had new pistons/rods and the head was rebuilt. Don't want to throw something away that I could use down the road but also don't want to store an entire engine in my garage.
OldAndyAndTheSea
Keep pistons, rods, and head. Pitch the rest.

josh817
Exactly, where is this crack? #5 or 6, so curious!
jerzee
#5 or 6, so curious! I can't figure out how to attach the photo but it's a horizontal crack that runs between the #2 and #3 cylinders about 1/2 inch below head. I'm guessing the head was torqued too much? didier
Hahaha! Awesome! THAT hole is typical on the sixes! Always #5! why always the 5th ? cooling temp ? ,oil pressure, ?
Tony D
My bet is combination of detonation and lack of oiling flow. But some 'experts' say I shouldn't listen to those sources as apparently they're inveterate liars... But it sounds plausible to me.
Xnke
I think it's detonation plus torsional vibration of the crank...it's usually the #5 that goes OR the crank breakages that happen at the #6 main journal... Either way, I have a new planter sitting out in the shed!
NewZed
To summarize - cracked L6 blocks are common. A crack between 2 and 3 is not common. Someone "rebuilt" the engine without noticing the crack (doesn't it project all the way through to the interior of the cylinder?). What happens if he just runs it as-is? Catastrophe or a slow death?
