IIRC, the sensor is a photo cell and IR emitter and won't distinguish which way the wheel will be rotating in orientation to it. It reads off whether there is light being reflected back or not. On that note, would polishing the high points on the teeth be worth doing?

"stain" defines it. the paint is stained. You can try buffing it to cut some of the paint to remove the stained parts.

They need to go back and redesigning with retro in mind. I mean look at the mustang and chargers. Everything doesn't need to be rounded.

Counter rotating doesn't necessarily result in balance. From what I can tell, the eccentric on the crank is used for the valve timing. I could only imagine the amount of vibration that it would produce (really, I could only guess).
