  1. I find age (of the driver) has alot to do with it. When you are 16-21ish, the cops will hassle you big time. As you get older they tend to let things slide. As for the Z, vs a honda or something.. yes I think you would get less problems in a "classic" car instead of a "young punk ricer mobile"
  2. Dude, I'm the one who said to play with your timing. Start advancing it slowly.. say a couple of degrees then take it for a drive. If after alot of abuse it still does not ping, go for a couple more.. and so on. Once is does ping turn it back to where it does not. Too many factors come into play to be able to say how much YOU can get away with. Even outside air temp plays a factor. Another thing you may want to consider.. I don't know what you are running for exhaust, but a really nice system will cut down on turbo lag considerably! On a turbo car, don't go cheap on a exhaust system. BTW, I guess you're not complaining anymore about the L28et's "lack of torque" Ha ha ha...
  3. 300zx injectors are smaller (unless it's a turbo) in which case they are the same size as a L28et
  4. Not really sure what to tell you as I don't really know what switch you are using and why. However I'll suggest that it is probably easiest to wire it from scratch. Unless that button is really heavy duty I wouldn't run power directly from it to the starter motor. I would set it up to trigger a relay. Allow the relay to send 12v+ from the battery directly to the starter whenever the relay is triggered
  5. Try advancing the timing. I'm not sure how much you can get away with on a stock ecu, I'm using a z31 ecu and have the timing marks advanced right off the scale. Still no ping and man, did it ever make a difference in the off idle response! If I were to just let the clutch out and hammer on the gas yes, it would be mushy.. for about .2 seconds, the next thing to happen is it wants to tear the tires off. That is why a little bit of lag can be a good thing.
  6. Yeah, I second that.. a different engine is a different engine, can't really compare apples to oranges.
  7. I have been in that situation of trying to drill out spot welds before. I was quite surprised to read all the varied answers and solutions to the problem in this thread. It has been my experience that a regular drill bit will not even begin to touch a spot weld. However if the drill bit is titanium coated, it'll drill through it quite well. One you have all the spot welds drilled out you should be able to separate the two panels with a good sharp chisel and hammer.
  8. 180 net HP gross would be more (that's why L24's are stated at 150)
  9. Yeah well if it works it works.. How do you find the cold start spray, does it have any kind of bog issues if you hammer on it too fast? (as in spray before boost has a chance to build) That idea is somewhat similar to how my alky injection kicks in. The alky richens the mixture under boost but it is controlled by a pressure switch. Very cool idea I must say..
  10. I know a rad hose can hold some decent pressure, however the pressure in a rad hose is normally from heat and therefore comes on very gradually. Like I said, those hoses are probably ballooning under boost. I'm not saying it won't work, just that it's a little sketchy. Especially when I've seen the problems that guys start to get with plumbing as they approach 20psi. You'll find leaks that you never had before, even with decent couplers and clamps.
  11. I agree, I remember using my "3rd elbow" to access a couple of those bolts for you, however I think the job would be alot easier in a 1st gen chassis.
  12. I question how well those rad hoses will hold boost at higher boost levels. Plus they must balloon out when you really hammer on it. Not the greatest for air-flow.
  13. I remember the first time I wasted a 94 5.0 with my old Z at 9psi, it was alot of fun.. I was holding back on the throttle cuz the car was already starting to sway to the side. As the car straightened out I got right on it. Until then we were side by side.. After that, he was history, I pulled on him HARD! Now that I'm running 15psi, I wouldn't even bother with a car like that. Phil, I remember you telling me about your wife complaining about you taking out your perfectly good engine and having stalling problems with the turbo engine that "you didn't need in the first place" Well now that you got it running good, has she seen what it can do? Does she think any differently? LOL
  14. Yes but his writeup in based on a 81 harness, if you want info on a 82/83 harness, you will find this post very useful... http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=105103&highlight=coil+trigger
  15. That is not correct.. you have the wires crossed black/white is + and blue is -
  16. Ok, being one Canadian to reply to this... I do know what you are talking about. I have seen this problem many times, but I am surprised to hear these complaints coming from the province of BC. Everytime I go out there I find it a pleasure to drive. Not only the beautiful scenery but the fact that the drivers are so much better than they are here. Vancouver is a fairly sizable city and for any of the natives to navigate a city of that size you have to be fairly aggressive. My city is much smaller and until recently did not have that many roads with speed limits above 60km/h unless you completly left the city and entered the country. (where farmer style driving prevails) I think alot of people must have moved into the city and retained their old driving habits and assume that there is nobody within 10km that actually wants to use the same road. Then when they do actually notice that there is another car near them, they freeze. Back in the day when I took my driving test, there was no showing your ability to merge, and somehow I doubt that they teach it now. I remember taking a road trip to Dallas and being very impressed how all the drivers would enter a merge onto a freeway.. 75mph, nobody would slow down and cars would simply slip into the lane without missing a beat. Out here that would never work, someone would panic and slowdown causing a severe pileup. Not only that, in Dallas the cars travelling down the freeway would EXPECT the car on the ramp to cut in front of them. It was no big deal because the car had already matched their speed. Here they would be honking and flashing the bird at the "crazy driver that just about killed them" Sometimes I have thought of the people here that can't merge and thought it would be good to send them to a place like Dallas and force them to merge. One of two things would happen.. they would either learn the hard way, or get caught in a terrible pile up. Either way, there would be less of them here to bother the rest of us that do know how to drive. As for this thread turning ugly, it may well yet do so. I am not personally offended by this thread because I can see the truth in it. However you have to be careful when making a post of this nature because in the simplest terms you ARE bashing our country and people "even Canucks" do take offense of that from time to time.
  17. I'm guessing that you have a 81 wiring harness? If so, I can't help you. Bumblezee made a post about how to swap a 81 harness however.
  18. If you want to look into the alcohol injection then check out the post I made showing my setup. There are definatly alot fancier setups out there but this one does the job and was VERY cheap to put together. http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=105547
  19. Yes, you can run it to the ignition. As for the other question I will simply direct you to this thread http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=105103&highlight=coil+trigger there really is very little about a Z that hasn't been covered here already, and most of the members that have been around the block get tired of answering the same old questions. If you don't do a good search on the info your looking for sooner or later someone will give you a lashing for it.
  20. The 280zxt coil is connected to coil trigger unit. On the trigger unit there are two spade type terminals. Can't recall which is which, but one goes to 12+ switched ignition source, and the other goes to the ecu.
  21. The injectors should have 12v power all the time. On one side, the other side goes to the ecu.
  22. I know you can get more than 250hp from the L28et (I'm probably at 260hp myself) I was just saying that a person that wants 250 to (300) hp probably should start with a bigger turbo. Especially when running high CR ratio's remember that a smaller turbo will create more heat the harder it is pushed, and that means hotter air to enter your engine. I remember reading that Scotty got 300hp on a stock T3 but did not advise trying to repeat that, especially if they are looking for reliability. There is also the point that he said z31 turbo, well correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the 87+ z31 come with a water-cooled turbo? I think that those were only T25's
  23. Well I did find out some info at D-series.org. Of course first the car has to get fixed up to be roadworthy, but eventually I'm gonna turbo it. I will keep my eyes open for a HF style exhaust manifold and do the adapter thing (it looks TOO easy!) Anyway, I've been looking at turbo options and was considering a Garrett Gt15: http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/catelog/Turbochargers/GT15/GT1548_466755_3.htm It's a little smaller than most of the turbo's that D series guys run but I want to set myself at a limit in a attempt to not blow up the auto tranny LOL! The Gt15 is supposed to be good for 200hp and that's really the most I wanna go anyway. Plus it has a pretty reasonable price tag ($495) I'm just wondering what you guys think, I'm imagining that it will spool up like crazy! Pehaps too much, giving me alot of wheelspin problems even in sub-normal driving.. Ha ha.. Any thoughts?
  24. Just a comment on the list of parts you have (or plan to have) You said a z31 T3, well.. if you want 275 to 300hp then you'll need a bigger turbo. It will be that much easier to achieve your HP goal with a 3" exhaust rather than a 2.5" You also mentioned that have a z31 maf, and wanna use megasquirt. Well megasquirt uses a built in map sensor. No need for the z31 maf. If you have a z31 maf and a 280zx dizzy with CAS, then you could also consider using a z31 ecu. If you want to run a really high CR (which I'm not advising) then I would consider running a good intercooler AND alcohol injection. The alcohol will just be another safety factor allowing you too push it just a little further. (by how much I don't know) but it would be nice to have at any rate.
