  1. Just one correction to your post. 74 no longer needs to be inspected, as of this year. Tim
  2. six of one, half a dozen of another. I would suggest that you stick to an overdrive auto, like a 700R4, or 200 4R, if you decide to go auto. Both have their pros, and cons. Comes down to preference. I prefer to be an involved driver and bang through the gears , but if you plan to do a lot of strip racing, auto would be the way to go. Tim
  3. Welcome aboard Sam! Looks like you have a good plan in place! You'll want to look into upgrading your brakes and possibly suspension. Also, you may want to reinforce the chassis in some way. Strut braces at a minimum, and maybe a rollbar. It's also the little things that will get you. You'll need a pair of motor mounts (69-72 sbc truck), radiator, hoses, belts, wiring etc. Good luck..... Tim
  4. Yes you are supposed to tell the DMV that you have changed the engine. They will send you to the Referee station. They certify the swap, not hte engine (samantics, I know). But, just like anything else on this topic, since you are not required to test it, who is going to be any the wiser? Just drop in the engine and drive....worry about the other stuff if/when it becomes an issue. Tim
  5. I hear ya!! My ZXT has 275k on it and I dropped a new Mercedes V8 Kompressor off the line this evening. He gave this snobby smirk, so I Spooled up the turbo and dumped the clutch...left a car length behind until mid 2nd gear, but by then it had merged from 2 into 1 lane...ha ha ha Tim
  6. Just keep in mind that I made mine for my 240. I will be making an educated guess on the ZX. Tim

    Which movie?

    CANNONBALL RUN!!
  8. Sorry Man. My zx has been at the office (I've been using the Co. Durango). I'll look on Friday morning. I have to pull my downpipe off to check the fit on my new 3.5 inch one. OK? Tim
  9. Didn't the tanks change as a result of Datsun moving to the temporary spare tire (smaller storage area) from the full size tire? If you want to increase the ground clearance to teh tank, can't you just cut a section out and reweld it? You'll obviously lose some fuel capacity, but ...... Tim

I've always loved how his supercharger had a clutch on it so he could switch it on and off, but the old school ricer boys totally nailed him with all their NAWZ!! Tim
  11. Hmmmm. I wonder if it'll take a long stroke, over bore, at high RPMs...ha ha ha ....I crack myself up!!!! ha ha ha Tim
  12. I believe that the conversion did not go well (kept crashing out) so much of the pre-conversion stuff is missing. I know Dan P. was planning to try the import again, but I also know that he has been out of the loop for a long while with personal/health issues. Tim
  13. I may be wrong, but since that would cause the MIL to illuminate, the inspector may have a problem with that. Tim
  14. My 73 had air pump, egr, and pcv, but you are required to keep all the smog equipment that comes with the new engine. Tim
  15. The guy did say that he was lifting at the line because he would get kicked off the track for going faster. His HP numbers are estimates from DD2000 I think, or maybe he was using his 1/4 mile times to estimate? Nice Old Guy and seemed to not be a B.S. artist. Tim
  16. Remember, it's a Federal crime to remove or tamper with emissions control equipment. The individual States also have rules forbidding this type of tampering. Bottom line, although you don't need to smog test pre-1974 vehicles in CA, you ARE required to have all of the original smog equipment installed and operational, and if you do an engine change, you ARE required to have it Certified by the State. The rub is this: Without having to take it in for a smog test, there really is no enforcment protocol in place to catch you. So, unless you get stopped at a roadside mobile emissions checkpoint (very very doubtful in CA due to the current Budget crisis), or get pulled over and the Cop gets wise and looks under the hood (also somewhat unlikely), then you are in the clear. Just be aware that the Federal penalties are very severe ($10,000.00 plus jail time) Tim

Has anyone seen "Death Race 2000". Old school, but fun anyway! Tim
  19. Look up the rules in the CA Health and Safety code. If there is no reference in there, then they cannot disallow it. It has to be in the rules!! Look here: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/calaw.html Tim
  20. Don't discount the V8 so quickly. Look at Dave Greimann's site. Now tell me this doesn't look like the factory didn't put it in there!: http://home.earthlink.net/~dvgreimann/index.html Tim
