Time to confess. How many s30's do you own?
blue72 replied to jasper's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
Am I correct in guessing that this statement means you have a "shark" 610 with an L20A? I could be way off on that one though. -
I haven't found the crank center to top of block height yet either. Let me know if you do.

We had a blizzard last night. 40+mph winds, lost power for 5 hours too. Disappointing snowfall for such a big storm though. I got a new little point and shoot digicam for Christmas, so here's what had accumulated on my Z from the "blizzard".

I got asked about those electric turbo scams

How about a chaparral sucker type setup? Small two stroke motor powers the giant fan that funnels air down into the engine. Hook the throttles together to create more "boost" as the rpms raise. -
If they are in fact Z transmissions, then the identification guide at the bottom of this page might help. http://geocities.com/inlinestroker/ratio.html

1970 Chevy Suburban K10 3 door. $1500 and a riding mower in trade. Close to 3 tons and all steel. Had the 350 bored 30 over, aluminum intake, hot cam, Doug's headers and TH700R4 when I drove it around to the tune of 7.5mpg in high school. I've still got it, but it's undergoing a frame off buildup. '88 TBI 454, 4L80E, 5 inches of lift, Dana 60 rear and 44 front with 4.11 gears, 35 inch tires. I've already done the frame off bit, sandblasted and POR-15'd the frame, custom built the transmission crossmember, modified the rear crossmembers to fit an EFI tank, etc... Only problem is that both of my projects compete for my limited cash and time.

I don't even want to know how bad the whine would be from those fans being backdriven by the intake tract air pressure. I bet these things get removed five minutes after they're installed just because of that. -
Here's a picture of my snow clearing apparatus taken this morning. I get to use the Max II to clear the parking lot whenever white stuff starts falling from the sky. Most of last week's snow melted already, but we got a few more inches last night and we're supposed to have more fall on Christmas day. I need to dig out the video camera so I can post some extended doughnut footage of this thing on the ice.

If my two Ecotec's weren't outside covered in snow right now I could take some pictures of how the intake is designed and show the path the air takes. I've also seen pictures of custom log style intake manifolds for these motors that'll fit an LS1 TB. As far as weight goes, it's two cylinders less than an L6, and the block and head are both lost foam cast aluminum. They're quite a bit lighter I'd think. I've also got all the dimensions of the 2.2l motor around here somewhere if someone needs them.

Those side by side pictures really have me convinced that those are not cpu cooling fans. -

Just one. That isn't stopping me from gathering engine parts for the next one though. -
Start reading through the engine forums at ratsun.net http://forum.ratsun.net/forumdisplay.php?f=14 There are plenty of ideas about getting more horsepower out of L and Z series motors. Take this one for instance: http://forum.ratsun.net/showthread.php?t=4005 510 Realm is a good one too, like Xnke said.

first time datsun owner ( my new project)

It's true that in certain states they were registered that way instead of based on model year. It sounds like a late '73 production, '74 model year 260Z. It is most certainly a 260Z though. It's also true that you can't tell the year just by looking at the fuel rail, especially seeing as mamba 888 just posted a week or two ago trying to find info for the three line rail in his '73 model year 240Z. As far as mods go, my '72 with an L28 and SU's had an estimated 180 horsepower at the crankshaft coupled with a 5 speed and 3.9:1 rear end but still returned 25mpg at 75mph. EFI guys are known to reach into the 30's. If you search for 'mpg' or 'fuel efficiency' you'll soon find the threads that list different combos and results using the I-6. This is probably the best place to search and research what modifications are most beneficial on an L series I-6. Another good resource is the "How to Modify Your Nissan/Datsun OHC Engine" by Frank Honsowetz. The cam that theghosttanker is talking about is the 260Z "C" stamp cam. There is a C stamped into the end of the cam itself, and it has slightly less valve lift on the intake side, but a tiny bit more intake and exhaust duration. The 260Z's also had an e88 head with 35mm exhaust valves instead of the 33mm ones from the 240Z E88. Another good identifier would be to find the engine code stamped into the block. It should say L26 followed by the block serial number. This site has a good side by side comparison of stock cams: http://www.geocities.com/bruskiz/ZCamSpecs.htm -
Sometimes it can be difficult to find the right search terms. Just keep reading the relevant threads you do find and look for more pertinent search terms. Most of the engine bay identifiers are cast into the parts themselves. You already found the L24 followed by the engine's serial number stamped into the rear of the block. The intake manifolds have nice big N33, N36, E88, etc... cast into the tops. The cylinder head is cast with a number below the #1 and #2 spark plug as well. Transmissions are a bit more difficult, but there are threads here that deal with identifying them, as well as a number of websites that'll help you find out what year tranny you've got. There's even another thread from earlier today with someone else who just bought an early 260Z with DGV's on it.

Nice icicle pics. I finally pushed the foot and a half of snow from the latest storms off of my Z this morning. More is supposed to fall this weekend too. I'll have to post some pics of my own next time I plow the parking lot with the 6x6.

It's at least a '74. Just look at the taillights. I'd say early style '74 260Z because of the thin bumpers. It's still got the N series intake manifolds and late flattop carb 3 line fuel rail, so some previous owner probably switched to the DGV's to be rid of the flattop SU's. If you're looking for info on swaps this is the place. Or, more accurately, the V8, RB and Nissan 4 Cyl forums are the place to search, read and peruse. -
I bought my 240z with the wrong window :(

Have you visited Zparts.com and seen their comparo photos? Here's what they show: I don't think you've told us what year Z it is yet though. -
10% margin of error is a great job? Doesn't even take into account temperature or any other variables.

I was able to not laugh while watching the video. Apparently some of what they said in Japanese was very funny, but I only know a few dozen phrases myself.

Around 0 Fahrenheit. 9800 feet altitude, 10:30 p.m. snow falling, no wipers, no heater, no winter clothing, running lights and headlights shorted out. It was around this time last year and I was driving from Phoenix to Southern Utah. I was driving a back highway over the top of Cedar Mountain in my '72 and came across a couple in an upside down Jeep Cherokee. They had rolled it off the road into a field just a minute before I came by in my Z equipped with Falken summer tires. I helped them gather some things from the XJ with socks on my hands, but luckily a man in an Impala was driving through 15 minutes later and had spare seats for them instead of my one passenger seat. We all made it down the other side of the mountain safely.

Just a wrench on both sides and a few minutes as long as they aren't rusted into one piece. If it's just a blob of solid rust it'd be anyone's guess as to what lengths you'll need to undertake to remove them.

Okay, so we have Henrik aka chevyz240 jack280 aka yourself and boodlefoof That's all I've ever seen personally, just you three. I can't really count myself, but I've just chopped the top on my 240Z 3D model. I'll post a render or two when it's presentable.

compression ratio from tri metal head gaskets?
blue72 replied to Gixxer Squid's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
I'm interested to know how your motor's built. Perhaps you have some combination of shaving and shimming the P90 and maybe your forged pistons are flat tops combined with the standard head gasket? That I suppose could get you in the 9.5:1 ballpark. I can't think of many other ways to make that happen though (aside from welding up the chambers more or custom domes on the pistons?) Just curious. -

Nice camera you've got there mull. Hopefully this satiates our relentless thirst for updates a little.
