More questions about AZC Coilovers
Sideways posted a topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
The threads with the most useful information on these is a few years old- So I figured I'd see if anyone was doing anything new. Apparently these use inverted shocks with the adjustments at the bottom (oh yippee). Now Daves website with the install information has some good ideas to make the rears easily adjustable, but lacks anything on the front. Ive seen a few ideas (JohnC, as always, had one of the best), but not many "heres what I did". So does anyone have any info on this now that these have been out for a couple years? Some pictures would be much more useful as well. I like the idea of this kit, but dont fancy having to do a lot of work to adjust something I feel should be adjustable within 30 seconds (Maybe im just spoiled by my other cars) Other question, is what spring rates is everyone running who has used these? His website says the only rates available are 180, 250, 375, and 500 (Ive asked if others are available- but Dave is notoriously slow in responses haha). I was thinking about using 375 up front and 250 out back, only other suspension mods on the car insist of poly bushings (i know- higher stiction- but better than blown out rubber haha), and a ST sway bar kit (the 1" front and 7/8s rear). The car in question is a 72 with an l28et making in the neighborhood of about 300 whp and about 350 wt. Due to my more aggressive driving style I seem to prefer setups with a smiiidge bit of understeer in them so I can get on the gas more and use it to rotate myself around turns (And no worries- I know these rates are on the stiffer side, support will be added to the car in the form of strut bars and a rear roll bar/welded in place rear strut bar). Any input on these rates, or possibly suggestions (I know- fairly loaded question, but any information is more helpful than none! haha). Id love to hear what others have been selecting and what their impressions are of them. -
I know this is offtopic- but have you considered just using a fuel-surge tank?
-
If those azc springs are too much for you, youll hate those qa1 coilovers. The azc springs are 180 pounds up front and 200 out back. Of course its possible your issues are from poorly valved/blown shocks, or something else entirely.

Alright fellow gurus- I am once again calling on your awesomeness here. What is the thread size of the fittings for the air injection system on the exhaust manifold? The PO removed the system and plugged it himself- But weve a sneaking suspicion he used the wrong size threads as 3 now have fallen out. I know welding would be the best way to go, but the motor is going soon so i dont want to spend the money on welding it, just want to get a cheapo' fix that will last for now so I can drive the vehicle without going completely deaf. Thanks again everyone!

Quote for bushing replacement
Sideways replied to Sideways's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Doh shouldve thought of that. Ill send him a PM now- im asking around as many places as I can. Sucks being in australia- makes getting work done on a car back in the states rather difficult haha -
Not sure if this is the right place or not, so apologies if I miss the right section Want to replace the bushings and spindle pins on my Z- Problem is im in Australia on a 12 month holiday visa so I cant do it myself. Im coming back in October and hope to have it done by the time I can get I get back (I have someone who can get the car around for me) So my question is, anyone know any shops they'd recommend in Socal to get this done? I have all the parts already (Poly bushings, spindle pins/bushings/hardware/locking pins, and will include the spindle pin remover tool built through hybridz to avoid the headache of pressing them out) and just need the labor. Anyone have any "ball park" quotes? Thanks again everyone!

Haha- appreciate the offer gothalosism- But ive still got a place there to ship them to (where im storing the car currently). Hopefully itll be cheaper to ship them to california, but if not oh well- off to vegas they go. Again I say we should meet up one of these days when I get back vegas after my visa expires if youre still in town. Im itching to get my 72 turbo onto some circuits when im back (Las vegas motor speed way, spring mountain is BRILLIANT if you get the chance, willow springs, etc), always looking for more buddies to make the days even better if youre into that type of thing. Still waiting on a reply from kim- Got a speedy first reply from him, but the last 2 have been painfully slow- and as others have pointed out, void of information. The mans short on words- Cant complain too much though, its an amazing offer. Edit for update reasons: Finally heard back from Kim- The price has simply gone up, as expected, due to increased shipping costs (again nothing unexpected with gas nearly having doubled). The fact that he can keep it at 825 (through pay pal- its actually 800 via money order) is still awesome. We should probably get the OP to update the first post on this page to reflect this price change- And maybe include kims contact information so you dont have to sift through posts to find him as I had to.
-
Haha didnt notice HZ changed locations automatically. Im actually american living here on a 12 month working holiday visa (6 year long distance relationship, woo)- And the shipping address was actually Las Vegas. 825 by all means still doesnt seem bad, but its still 75 bucks haha. Oh well- I cant complain, still much cheaper (shipped no less) than anything else I want. Ive got an address I can have it shipped to in california as well (Los Angeles), so im seeing if that shorter distance makes any difference. Gas has skyrocketed lately, so it should be expected if anything- but well see.
-
Just an update for anyone here who might be interested- It seems the price has gone up? I've contacted kim and gotten a quote for 825 dollars through paypal, or 800 by money order. Wonder if shipping is just too much lately?

When I get back home in vegas we need to meet up one day. Awesome mod

For those of us who are less suspension-tech-savvy than others, can someone please elaborate on the actual benefits of this?

Im either being oblivious or having a hard time using the search function on this site- JMortensen can I trouble you for a link to the thread youre talking about? Side note: Is there a way to search for just topics made by a specific individual? I can go into the profile and search for the last 3 or so they made, or i can go to search and type a name into "author", but it doesnt pull up a list of just threads that person made. Ive really found this new (Well, not new anymore- but compared to the previous sites) search engine to be a bit less useful than what we had before sadly.

I know im really, REALLY late on this post, and TOTALLY off topic- But its amazing how small the world is. Im writing this email from australia right now, but I used to live there- Just off crenshaw between Torrance high and Del Amo BLVD. Ill be back in town in october and moving back to america april of next year. Glad to read that everyone came out ok from that wreck

Valve cover paint? Regular or engine paint
Sideways replied to voltron_boi's topic in Body Kits & Paint
This was the result of testing 99 cent walmart spray paint on my extra valve cover. Has held up for a couple thousand miles now with no issues to report. (The paint -does- lay down glossy, I used some technique/trickery to make it crinkle) -
Moveable aerodynamics on the Ford Fusion

Its amusing to see this. Ive been planning for ages now to do this very thing to my Z once I get home from australia. My biggest question for myself was if I wanted it to be self-actuated (flip a switch) or temp-actuated. My inspiration came from my other car- Ive got an 1986 Corolla Gts. In japan they had something VERY similar to this (on the Levin models)- the grills on the car had temp sensors and would open/close as needed: -
Again have to agree with what was said before. Id set it all back to how it was before, and just change things one at a time instead of going all out and doing it all at once. You wont know how much of an impact each individual change is making, ya know?
-
I dont think the argument was about it adding neutrality, I think the issue was the light you painted the staggered set up in. Im only assuming he had the same impression as I did, but you made it appear as though it wasnt favorable and was just a "performance look".
-
I know I dont pop my head in much on these things, I usually leave it to the more experienced- but im feeling zelous today. Im inclined to agree completely with john, your set up has everything going for it that induces understeer, softer rear springs, no rear sway, a good stagger, a slight toe in out back, etc. Changing any one of or any combination of these will (well, should) help. Youve set yourself up to have a lot more traction out back then up front. Unless youre really missing your line to the next corner or just REALLY cant stand this feeling, its probably not a bad thing, especially if youve got a good bit of power. It should really let you be able to squirt out of the corner a LOT faster than a looser set up will allow, and hey- Slow in fast out right? Edit: Quick question for you, your tires are close to what i plan to run for my car- Did you have any issues with the fenders(or flares themselves) rubbing with this set up? Im assuming you cut the fenders as well when you installed those flares?
-
Could always put it on a diet and stop feeding it oil? Itll stop consuming oil on its own sooner or later. Probably sooner. Sadly for toasted rings there isnt much you can do, short of tearing it down and replacing the rings, at least not in my humble experiences. Whats a realistic time-frame to have your 3.1 together? If its that far off, replacing the rings might not be that bad of an idea after all. For starters rings are cheap- and ill tell you from first hand experience you can do it without taking the engine out of the car. I replaced all of my pistons with the motor still in the car, just undid the oil pan/head and had at it. Took me one night after work with a buddy to get it done.

Gold ball physics. Help lower your drag, your Z just got faster! 1 point for nature.

Wonder what kind of gains ill see with some aero work i have planned, if any. Currently im getting almost 30 mpg with my turbo z.

Edit: Just adding a link i enjoyed reading, has a bit of input on spoilers and shapes/angle from someone who used to be involved with racing, interesting stuff. http://www.circletrack.com/techarticles/ctrp_0707_stock_car_aero_downforce/index.html

Yup, sadly all they have are the BAMF flares, a lot wider then I will ever need/fill sadly. Someone on another forum has posted some for 100 shipped, sent a word to him but no response yet
-
Yup theyre not too far from here. Love zcp but theyre a smidge on the higher end of the price range for the same parts you can get elsewhere unless theyre on sale. The flares are sadly full price right now so im just waiting watching for a potential deal until they come back on sale again (hoping they do)
