  1. the tach will just plug into the MSD box, there is a special Tach output on one end of the msd box, you just run your tach sinal wire to it and your done, I have the aluminum flywheel no complaints, I wasn't impressed with clutchmasters DF, everyone seems to love the Spec clutches and they offer one with a custom aluminum flywheel as a package for big power cars
  2. i believe you do need your ecu to control the stock ignition, moby's maps have been great amd makes the swap pretty painless, but you are running an 81 most of us are 82-83 so I can not be positive
  3. when using stock managment, the turbo dist will work only with the turbo electronics! and the stock turbo elecytronics will only work with the turbo dist! hope that clears up a bit for you
  4. mostly autocross, I just didn't want heavy toyota calipers, just seemed wrong
  5. ok pretty much covered in the topic, I got a set of 84-85 Z31 vented rotors, and a set of 90 Z32 N/A calipers (90 used the 26mm 4 pots) and I plan on mating them to an S30 spindle assy, and fit them inside my 15" wheels, anyone ever tried something this wierd? I've of course searched and read up on all sorts of Z31 or Z32 swaps but never this combo, and if it works out I'd think it'll be some wicked stopping power, so of course I have to make a spacer ring for the rotor and an adapter plate for the Calliper the lines look like they might just fit I'll find out tomorrow I guess, any words of wisdom? kinda getting off the beaten path and hoping this works
  6. I just put that one on my car, my old one looked like ot was coming apart
  7. the jim cook kit is injected, it uses a throttlebody type injection system and the kit even includes the harness and computer, I'd have to geuss that the a carb could be put in place and you'd only need the intake and charger assy, might make it affordable to carb it edit: I gotta learn to type
  8. it sounds like the power wire you hooked to your ecu isn't hot during cranking! unblug the trigger wire from your started and rotate your key to the cranking position, while holding the key pushed forward as if you were starting the car check the power supply you wired to the ECU
  9. lol, yeah the turbo uses an opticla dist, with 2 outputs one sends 360 signals oer revolution and the other sends 6 signals per revolution, then there are the N/A dist's 240's used points, had a single output wire and was vacume advanced made 6 contacts with the ground per revolution, then came the electronic dist, it had 2 wires and worked like a switch 6 times pre revolution and was also vacume advanced, then in 79 came a differnt kind of electronic dist it has a littel black box mounted on it's side, which si a replacable control module, I can't remember what kinda of signal it had but it was different from the earlier one and dends 6 signals per revolution with vacume advance as well, then in 81 came the turbo car, in 81 only it had a dist that only served to attach the coli to plug wires, it had no other wiring, the motor used a crank mounted CAS which made 3 signals per revolution? adn no vacume advance! (advance = turbo=boom), then in 82 they came out with the "turbo dist which I started out with at the beginng, if your not confused now that makes one of us
  10. that is sexy, and that intake looks killer! great job, what kind of throttle bodies are you using?
  11. sensors needed for MSnS: a real TPS (the z used a throttle switch you'll need one thats variable like the 240sx unit) the stock CHTS a gm IAT (perferably the one with the little diade thingy in the cage) a 2 bar map sensor (this can be onboard or remote) a crank angle sensor or dist without mech/vac advance an O2 sensor (they suggest heated)
  12. Ioften wondered if anyone used the jim cook kit, I have no idea the cost as his site doesn't have prices and turbo seemed to be cheaper http://www.jimcookracing.com/catalog/page24.html
  13. that is the 82-83 turbo dist, thats the one we're all using, and it's instalation with the MSnS is detailed in the Megasquirt forum located hee http://forums.hybridz.org/forumdisplay.php?f=88
  14. yes we know for sure! getem on there and start driving, you will not have any fitment issues
  15. sounds like your looking at a N/A advancing dist, I just noticed your in AUS sh who knows what you have ?
  16. 225/50/15's fit with no problem and those are race tires which are wider tahtn any street tire rated for that width, 9.2" section width and 23.7" diameter, I'd suggest something in a 225/60/15 the stats for most street tires are gonna be in an acceptable range and you can go for the 225/50/15 if you want a smaller tire
  17. I did a honda out the bottom, I had a hoist tog et the car high enogh for the motor to come out I only did it to keep the suspension and tranny intack, big mistake, easier to remove the pieces
  18. if you have an 81 then your dist shoud be hollow and you should have the crank pulley mounted sensor
  19. dunno what a ps40 is but as far as I know pretty much all coils are interchangable
  20. it would help to know what your problem is, if your doing the L28ET swap the detailed instructions can be found in either the L6 or the Turbo forums, if your had a running L28ET that's acting up then the turbo forum is your best bet, if your looking to do a stand alone conversion the Megasquirt forums will tell you all about megasquirt, if you want a different system just use search, if your wanting to do the 300zx computer swap those instrustions are stickied in the trurbo forum
  21. yup, the 81 turbo came with a crank mounted CAS, the 82-83 turbo came with an opticla dist that has 2 outputs, one sends 6 signals and the other sends 360, or you can put the disk for a Z31 in and get 12? signals per rev, do a search and read up in the megasquirt forums, all about wiring up the megasquirt several of us are running the MS and a lot of people are running other aftermarket systems
  22. I say it's been sold as a modified car that can't be guarenteed! but you already agreed to help him with the head gasket and bolts so find them cheap and write the guy a check for that amount, if he wants to upgrade that'll be on his dime
  23. congrats, welcome to the fold, I know how great it feels to get it running after a long fight....heck I think we all do
  24. do a search in the drivetrain section, myself and at least one other person have written about what we did to make the swap
